Wikipedia and copyright[edit]

Control copyright icon Hello Bluecountrymutt! Your additions to South View Cemetery have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa 🇨🇦 (talk) 21:03, 28 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

South View Cemetery moved to draftspace[edit]

An article you recently created, South View Cemetery, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Notice

The article Richard C. Caesar has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Fails WP:BASIC and WP:ANYBIO. This person was one of the 922 pilots of the Tuskegee Airmen, and the sources listed to support notability are mostly blogs and an obituary from a funeral home. The only reliable secondary sources with biographical details cited in the article are this, where there are five sentences about him, and this, where there are two sentences.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

Tuskegee Airmen[edit]

Thank you for your efforts to expand information about the Tuskegee Airmen. It is unfortunate so many of your drafts were approved, only to be deleted later. I have been looking at many of the biographies you have created--and continue to create--and many in fact seem to lack notability. I'd hate to see you wasting your time, so I would strongly suggest you carefully read WP:BIO just to make sure the person you are writing the article about truly meets Wikipedia's criteria for a biography. Thank you again. Magnolia677 (talk) 10:06, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with Magnolia677, you should slow down and consider whether or not each of these men really has "significant coverage in multiple published secondary sources that are reliable, intellectually independent of each other and independent of the subject." as required by WP:BASIC. Blogs, funeral service programs and passing mentions do not satisfy those requirements. regards Mztourist (talk) 11:31, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I also agree with Magnolia677 as well as Mztourist. You need to provide significant coverage from reliable sources if you believe a subject is notable and know that having served in a well known military unit does not equal notability. Also, please be wary of wording and inaccurate statements. For instance, while the Tuskegee Airmen were the first African American pilots to see combat for the United States, that they were the first ever is false as Eugene Bullard flew 20+ combat missions for the French in WWI. Hi, Bluecountrymutt. I wanted to thank you for creating William N. Alsbrook (as well as other Tuskegee Airmen; I've seen your work from WikiProject Missing Encyclopedia articles' page on famous people from Find A Grave. I also wanted to let you know that you can reuse citation, which reduces clutter, makes citations more organized, and importantly, makes it so you can edit all instances of the same citation without individually updating each one.

There are two ways to do this. The first is in visual editing mode. When you go up to 'Cite', instead of using 'Manual' or 'Automatic', the 'Re-use' tab will allow you to select a citation to reuse. If the citation doesn't already have a name ascribed to it, it'll just give it a generic, numbered name like ":0", ":1", ":2", etc. However, if it already has a name, it will simply keep that name. Meanwhile, if you want to do this in source editing mode, you can find the citation that you want to be the "original", so to speak. Then where it says "<ref>reference here</ref>", you can change that "<ref>" to "<ref name="WhateverIwanttocallmyreference">reference here</ref>". Now, when I want to reuse this, I can just say "<ref name="WhateverIwanttocallmyreference"/>" – it's just what you added to the front of the "original" citation but with a backslash at the very end. This means that this reference doesn't actually have to contain the body of the reference and can act sort of like a pointer. Hope this helped, and happy editing! If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Paula Lodi requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://armymedicine.health.mil/Biographies/DSGS. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. First 2 sources are CAF Rise Above, a user contributed site so not RS. 3rd source is just a passing mention in a photo caption. Aviation Online magazine is of questionable reliability and doesn't seem to have been updated since 2017. Troup County sounds reliable but no link or title was given and I can't find anything on searching the site. Getty Images is just a photo. Finally Christian Science Monitor is RS but this is not substantial coverage and just based on an interview with the subject.
