Re: Email

I would prefer to discuss the issue on the article's talk page rather than via email. That way other editors who watch the page can see the conversation and weigh in. That's what article talk pages are for. In a nutshell, yes Planet of the Vampires is cited by O'Bannon as one of a number of works that inspired his writing of Alien, but mention of that film in particular isn't pertinent to the article lead. Why mention that film in the lead and not all the films that influenced him? The lead is supposed to be an introduction to the article: It suffices to say in the lead that Alien drew influence from previous works of science fiction and horror (since, again, O'Bannon has cited a number of influences). Naming the specific influences is best left to the body paragraphs, and readers can look there if they want to know which works specifically were the influences. --IllaZilla (talk) 02:52, 29 June 2011 (UTC)

Edit summaries

Hi, Beadmatrix. Just wanted to ask, editor to editor, respectfully, that we keep film plots to 700 words or less, per WP:FILMPLOT, and that your edit summaries not use the word "streamlined" when you're increasing the word count. I appreciate your intentions and your collegial tone. I hope you can understand, first of all, how it can seem anti-intuitive to see "streamlining" used to describe plot expansion beyond 700 words. More importantly, with Flight, a large number of editors steadily contributed since November 3 to reach the stable version that was unilaterally overhauled in a way that violated WP:FILMPLOT. A similar thing is the case with Shakespeare in Love. With stable articles we follow the policy at WP:CAUTIOUS.

We also keep film plots to 700 words or less. It is extremely rare, with films that use non-linear narrative and other experimental or unusual forms, to have to go beyond this; even the wildly convoluted plot of Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol fits within 700 words. Unilaterally overhauling a stable movie article in a way that bloats that plot past guideline is certainly something that would require discussion first under the policy — not guideline, but policy — noted in the paragraph above.

I understand being bold. And you and I are both doing the right thing: bold, revert, discuss. I'm happy to talk plot specifics at those two articles' talk pages, and I'm sure the other editors who reached the consensus versions that were there would join us so that it continues to be a group effort.
