Article I've Chosen to Edit[edit]

I've chosen to edit Tomboy because I think the page would benefit from recent scholarly research. I plan on expanding it using the research of Michelle Ann Abate, Judith Halberstam, and other academics that I have found in a scholarly journal. Beachmirage (talk) 15:45, 28 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

User:Beachmirage|Beachmirage, if you NAME an editor (as I've just done, but with double-square brackets … … i.e. copy it from the message they left]], they know you have replied), I don't think I can help with Tomboy, but but there are editors there who will 'jump in' if they don't agree with your edit. … … ps you choose try to remember to indent replies/comments on talk pages, for readability. … … pps I see you DID name me, I didn't realise because I was replying first to MY talk page message.Pincrete (talk) 08:41, 2 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I had a quick look at the Tomboy talk page, Flyer22, who watches that article is (in my experience) strict but fair in her enforcement of guidelines. I'm sure she will 'put you right' if you make any mistakes. Best wishes.Pincrete (talk) 17:28, 2 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Pincrete, okay, that clears things up about talk pages. In this class, we are learning as we go, errors and all. It's cool that you know the editor of the other article and that she is fair. It was a "long shot" asking for you to edit my ideas, but I had liked the way you phrased revisions of my sentences to make them clearer, so that's why I asked. If you don't mind, could I ask you a few questions about your experiences as a Wikipedia editor? How did you learn to know other editors like Flyer22? Was it through seeing familiar names on talk pages? Also, I saw that you used British English spelling, so do you notice any disagreements between British and American writers and editors due to dialectical differences? Best regards, Beachmirage (talk) 04:30, 3 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It's pure chance that I 'know' Flyer22 (I added Lyra from HDM to the list of notable Tomboys in literature). I disagreed with her about some of the content/weight of the article, but found her perfectly reasonable to deal with.
There are guidelines about US/UK etc English, basically if there is a strong connection to one country, THAT variant of English is used, thus Pullman writes in UK English, so this is used in 'his' articles. Many articles have no clear connection, so the usage is arbitary, but is kept consistent within the article (Adolf Hitler happens to be UK English, perhaps for no better reason that the article was written originally in that variant). Tensions are not common about this, though we all make mistakes ocassionally such as not recognising a variant usage or spelling.Pincrete (talk) 09:55, 3 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Pincrete, this is very interesting to know! I hadn't really though about differences in dialect until I saw your writing, which made me wonder. Well, I won't pester you with more questions, but thank you for answering the ones I did have. I agree that Lyra is a tomboy according to the criteria listed in some of the research I've read, so that's great that you added her to the list! Beachmirage (talk) 22:48, 3 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings[edit]

Hi Shauna. I see that you have started the training for Wikipedia but have not completed it. You need to do so for the course. Let's discuss it if you have any questions. LLRungegordon (talk) 21:42, 18 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I have completed the training, and I have added a sentence to an article about Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials series!--Beachmirage (talk) 21:38, 20 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
In addition, I have made suggestions for improvements on the article about "Close Reading" as part of Thursday's assignment!--Beachmirage (talk) 22:50, 20 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I've slightly modified your edit on HDM, for reasons of clarity, here:[1]and [2]. I've also added a link to the first mention of Harry Potter on the page. Welcome.Pincrete (talk) 23:18, 20 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Pincrete, for helping to edit the wording of my contribution. You wouldn't believe how many times I tried revising that one sentence before posting it to HDM. Your revision greatly improved the clarity of my post. I'll aim for more succinct writing in my addition to the next article I want to work on called Tomboy because I have been informed on the talk page that the article has high standards. If it isn't too much to ask (and because I saw on your page that you have edited articles for two years) could you check the Tomboy article to see if my contribution needs improvement? (I plan on posting it sometime the week of June 8.) I'm part of a class that is learning to edit Wikipedia, and I'll have my contribution written up in my sandbox before I even post it, so you are welcome review it there too... though I probably won't start writing that until this weekend. I want to make a worthwhile contribution to that article in adding more information about academic scholarship on tomboys, and I wouldn't want my addition to be completely removed simply because my writing for this site is in the novice stages. Thanks for the welcome! Have a wonderful day :) Beachmirage (talk) 04:53, 2 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Grants:PEG/User:LLRungegordon/Wikipedia edit-a-thon for the Aphra Behn Society[edit]

The article Grants:PEG/User:LLRungegordon/Wikipedia edit-a-thon for the Aphra Behn Society has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This page was created on the wrong wiki (Grants are meant to be placed on the Meta-Wiki).

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. IsraphelMac (talk) 03:17, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

IsraphelMac, I would like to explain why I am moving this page from Wikimedia to Wikipedia and to ask you not to delete it. I am the intern for Dr. Runge, who was awarded the Wikimedia grant. She got the grant to do a Edit-a-Thon in November, and she needs the page to be moved from Wikimedia to Wikipedia for the purposes of her project. If you would like to confirm this information with her, you can reach her at LLRungegordon. I am open to discussing possible solutions that could work for this issue. Thank you. --Beachmirage (talk) 03:27, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
If you wish to object (you are :P), you may remove the proposed for deletion tag on the page as per the policy at WP:PROD. There are some additional steps you must follow after that to prevent it from being proposed for deletion again, and they are also listed on the policy page. Anyhow, I do find it a bit odd that the page needs to be on Wikipedia instead of the Meta-Wiki. IsraphelMac (talk) 03:37, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
IsraphelMac, thanks for the info. I just removed the tag as you were sending your reply, and I will look up the policy info tomorrow and see what else needs to be done. I'll email her tonight and get a more concrete answer to help make a case for why the article needs to be moved (she told me a great reason which I am forgetting at the moment). Due to the holiday weekend, I might not get a reply until next week, but I will update you when I know more. Beachmirage (talk) 03:47, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The page seems to exist on the original location: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:PEG/User:LLRungegordon/Wikipedia_edit-a-thon_for_the_Aphra_Behn_Society , with scoring and discussion and etc at: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants_talk:PEG/User:LLRungegordon/Wikipedia_edit-a-thon_for_the_Aphra_Behn_Society. As to the page you created here: en.wikipedia doesn't have a grants: namespace, so the grant proposal shows up in the actual encyclopedia . That can't possibly be right. Are you sure you've got the right idea? Can you tell us what are you're trying to achieve? Perhaps folks can help! --Kim Bruning (talk) 04:08, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
To Kim Bruning and IsraphelMac , I double checked with my professor, and in fact, I did copy the wrong page, and I need to delete this problematic page. How do I delete Grants:PEG/User:LLRungegordon/Wikipedia edit-a-thon for the Aphra Behn Society? The page I was supposed to copy into Wikipedia is [[3]], and I have now created a page Meetup/New Jersey/Aphra Behn Society Editathon. Can you let me know if there are any problems with Meetup/New Jersey/Aphra Behn Society Editathon in case I need to fix the page? Thank you for your help as I am still learning how to use Wikipedia (I am a student editor/intern). I do apologize for any confusion and inconvenience. Best, Beachmirage (talk) 18:19, 7 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
requested --Kim Bruning (talk) 21:29, 7 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
And done. Hut 8.5 21:37, 7 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'm going to recommend learning about namespaces btw, since the new page is created in main namespace again, which is problematic. Did you mean to maybe make something like User:Beachmirage/Aphra Behn Society Editathon ? That would be entirely permissable, since you have sufficient lattitude to do so in your own personal space. I'm still not sure that's the best solution, but it works at least. Definitely get a wikipedian to help you. See also: Wikipedia:IRC/wikipedia-en-help if you'd like semi-real-time help. --Kim Bruning (talk) 00:59, 8 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I've moved the page to User:Beachmirage/Meetup/New Jersey/Aphra Behn Society Editathon. I dream of horses If you reply here, please ping me by adding {{Ping|I dream of horses}} to your message. (talk to me) (contributions) @ 04:00, 8 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
