Carlo Felice Cillario

Hi. I'm surprised there's nothing online yet. I've searched without luck too. It was announced on Sunday night on ABC Classic FM by Moffat Oxenbould, and he even interrupted his normal programming to have a mini-tribute to him. Apparently he died "on Thursday" in Bologna, Italy. I'm sure something will appear online in due course. Oh, I didn't think you were making it up. It's possible that it's a false report, which happens in good faith on news services from time to time. Moffat O. is connected to the very bowels of the opera scene in Australia, and I wouldn't be the slightest bit surprised if he got this information through private sources. I'm sure they would have been close personal friends, and he would know Cillario's family etc. Still, he put it out there for all the world to hear, and you'd have thought some music-loving journo (is that an oxymoron?) would have written something about it by now. On the other hand, it's only been just over 24 hours, so ... I've often heard about the deaths of classical musicians, composers, conductors etc via ABC radio, in some cases many, many days before it hit the general news media. -- JackofOz (talk) 09:58, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

Jonathan Witchell

Have performed the move myself but, for future reference, among the tabs at the top (a few to the right of "edit this page") is one called "move." If you click on that, you will be brought to a new screen where you can type in the name of the page you want to move the current page to (ie. the correct spelling in the case) and a box for you to enter a reason (ie. • ha ha, a load of drunks at this time of year? what sort of a suggestion...! anyway, yeh, it seems to have passed now although it happens semi-regularly. the best way imo to deal with that would have been the IP block which prevents all anon/IP users editing for a temporary period (24 hours is a good example). i would have deployed it but (a) i'm not sure how; and (b) i dunno if you need to be an admin to do it (which i ain't). but nice work anyway and i'll look into this for next time ;-) cheers, tomasz. 16:09, 1 January 2008 (UTC)

John Brandon-Jones

Contrary to what you wrote on my user page, I have never changed Mr. Brandon-Jones's nationality from "British" to "Briton" nor did I make any changes in the way the text appears on the page. Instead I changed the linked article from Britain to Briton. What you seem not to realize is that when you revert those edits and link to Britain, you're linking to a disambiguation page. Linking to a disambiguation page is almost always erroneous. You can find the relevant guideline here. There is a currently ongoing project to rid Wikipedia articles of as many links to disambiguation (dab) pages as possible, which you can find out about here. Continuing to link to a dab page will only result in the article reappearing on a list of pages with links that need disambiguating, bringing myself or another editor back to repair it. Although I did not claim that "Briton" is a nationality, the article at Briton says that "Britons are a nation" which seems to contradict you. When I disambiguate links to "Britain" that are piped under the adjective "British", I look at what the adjective is modifying. If it's referring to a British person, I invariably link to Briton as that word is a synonym for "British person". If it refers to a British company or product or governmental agency, I might handle it differently. If it is your contention that Mr. Brandon-Jones was not a Briton, I will be happy to try to find a better solution. However, I should think that would involve editing the text so that it no longer contains the word "British".

I still think that "Briton" is the best link for "British", but if you link to United Kingdom at least it's not a dab page and won't bring me back there. I won't kick if you link there. • Hi there. Australians may not accept a distinction between someone born somewhere else and within the country, but i think the page should take a more global view. So while Australians may not go in for "branded" versions, the worldwide viewpoint of a person may well indeed. i take your point about Orszaczky being as 'Australian' a name as O'Malley, but if i asked someone the country they associate with "O'Malley", they would not necessarily cite Australia as first choice.   • hey. yes, i actually agree that's the best way to deal with it anyway... i'm not sure my example would necessarily "indicate a lack of knowledge about how diverse Australia is" (tho obviously it could), more that it's just not the most obvious choice. Eldest/Oldest

With regard to your recent edit to Deaths in 2009, why is it oldest child and not eldest child? Just curious, I would have thought either is acceptable. Fol de rol troll (talk) 02:25, 1 December 2009 (UTC)
