Ballinamallard

Hey Ardfern thanks for the census stuff on the Brookeborough page I created. Just letting you know that there were several generations between the minister and his more famous offspring in Ballinamallard. He was 18th Century. Until recently my family owned the farm on which he was from.

Edit summaries

Please enter edit summaries for edits as often as you can. These allow other editors to quickly see the change made and allow you to provide an explanation. It is particularly important for edits that may be somewhat controversial, such as moving a poet from a category associated with Ireland to one associated with Northern Ireland. Thank you. Chick Bowen 22:15, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi, I've been deleting the Cain information you have been adding to various Northern Ireland town pages. I don't think there is any need to list every single shooting. Major gun or bomb attacks certainly should be though.

I'm finding them everywhere, do you know which towns you have edited? Thanks. Stu 16:39, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

By the way, the work you have been doing on the categorisation of Northern Ireland pages is fantastic. You've fixed quite a few pages I categorised incorrectly when I created them. I'll be more careful in the future! Stu 16:46, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

St. Patrick, died in ???

Hello Ardfern; concerning Patrick: I have since changed his year of death back to 493 because it is now - after decades of disputes, arguments and discussion - believed to be more accurate than that of 461. The latter date is now seen as that of Palladius, who was one of the Bishops and priests working in Ireland prior to Patrick. If you have any objections, please let me know and hopefully we can sort it out. Slan! Fergananim 14:45, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

List of Airlines: Trade Air

Hi Ardfern; I am currently an employee of Trade Air and wanted to write an article about TDR - thnx: you did a great job. I was just wondering where you took all the information from? 16:37, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

African International Airways

"UK company Intavia assists in providing the management of African International Airways, which is owned by PJM Corbin and JL Warburton McBride (76%) and Intavia (24%)." What is the source of this please?

hey

what part of northern ireland do you live in? i live in belfat, but i go to just near larne on the edge of whitehead a lot.

Carryduff

Hello Ardfern, I notice you expanded the bit on the Irish name of Carryduff. I was just wondering what your source for this was? I hadn't heard mention of it before. (Is a placename like "Carryduff" just an Anglicisation of an original Irish one?)--feline1 14:10, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

I see, I went to culturenornirond.org like you suggested, but they just state that translation there - there's no source given. So I emailed them to see where they got it from. (I'm just interested to know if they've simply done a restrospective Irish translation of the modern name, or whether there's records of the Irish name being used originally, and "Carryduff" is an Anglicised version of the original.) Cheers.--feline1 19:57, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

Sinn Fein politicians

Well done for adding the new category as well as the Progressive Unionist one. It has been on my to-do-list for a while and you have saved me a job, so thanks :-) Keresaspa 16:40, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

Superfluous category

I wish to understand why Sheehan was deleted from the category Irish writers seeing he falls into the category Authors in the Wikisource ?. Thank you and greetings Osioni 23:04, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

  • Fair enough, but he was left "superfluous" and had not been moved to non-fiction writers as you said, I have just done that. When I look at Category:Irish writers I see at a glance at least a half-dozen who are also "Non-fiction" writers and just wonder why they remain. I'm not trying to start a tangle, I just wish to get clear. On the other hand Patrick Augustine Sheehan is in non-fiction but most (or all) of the Canon's writings are fiction. I've written up much of William O'Brien, where does he belong ? or P.A. O'Siochain or Elisabeth Hawkins-Whitshed as an "Irish writer" ? etc. etc. Osioni 21:39, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

Category:Buildings and structures in Ireland

I have reverted some of your edits for now. Please see Wikipedia:Categories for deletion/Log/2006 June 8#Category:Buildings and structures in Ireland for a current discussion about the category. It is intended to serve as an umbrella category for buildings and structures in all of Ireland, much as the Irish architecture category does not solely apply to either part of the island. Edits like making Category:Buildings and structures in Northern Ireland a subcategory of Category:Buildings and structures in the Republic of Ireland make no sense at all. - EurekaLott 21:58, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

It's good that somebody is trying to bring some order to these categories - your work is appreciated. While it would be nice if we could separate everything into Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland categories, some subjects (as I'm sure you know better than I do) cannot be divided so neatly. Some of the ambiguities, I think, could be cleared up with simple renamings. For example, Category:Bridges in Ireland consists entirely of structures in the Republic of Ireland, so the category could be renamed to Category:Bridges in the Republic of Ireland to avoid ambiguity. I didn't look through all the articles in Category:Castles in Ireland, but if all of the ones in Northern Ireland are included in Category:Castles in Northern Ireland, then it, too, could be renamed (provided the Northern Ireland category is removed as a subcategory). However, an article like List of tallest structures in Ireland that covers both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland has to go somewhere, and I don't know of a better place than Category:Buildings and structures in Ireland. Am I making any sense? - EurekaLott 01:45, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

I was just putting an infobox in for the airport. When I checked the official I found that they spell the town "Carrickfinn" rather than "Carrickfin". I checked with Google (not always reliable) and it would seem that the double nn is more common but of course does not mean more correct. If you feel that the single n is the better spelling then can you change it back. Thanks. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 15:22, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

As you have contributed to an article relating to Belfast, I hope you could take some time to read this page about our new project: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Belfast.

Death stats

Hi Ardfern, I'm sorry that I have reverted your edits on this subject today. But I really feel that some consensus should be reached before you start adding this again. There was an agreement before, and I feel you should stand by this until agreement is reached again. Cheers, Stu ’Bout ye! 21:19, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

How are you getting on with the Troubles-related deaths thing? I've been busy with the Belfast Project and with re-vamping the Northern Ireland project (feel free to enhance/add/use and abuse them both by the way!) --Mal 01:27, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi, I wonder if you would take a look at User:Keithgreer/Education_in_Northern_Ireland, to see what you think, it's not complete by any means. Also, would be a good idea to add sections on the various levels of education in NI (Primary, Secondry, Grammar, FHE, etc.)? NI Primary schools proposed deletions

I've never step foot in any of the communities listed. I've never heard of the schools. But I do know that these are articles that deserve to remain on Wikipedia. I have voted to delete articles, almost always because the subject is offensive or hopelessly slanted. So many people seem to have an Encyclopædia Britannica view of what should be on Wikipedia, referring to WP:NOT as a justification for deletion, when it rarely applies to the article in question. I've done much work on school articles in my home state of New Jersey, and the least I can do is to show respect for those who have created school articles elsewhere. Best of luck with the AfD and all of your efforts on Wikipedia. Alansohn 20:06, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

Newpage patroller

I've answered on my own talk page (I think it's easier to keep the back and forth together in that way), but as I didn't know if you had noticed it, I thought I'ld drop you a line here. Fram 19:28, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

Primary schools

I saw your post on the Australian notice board, and while I generally agree with you, you're not really helping your own case. The articles you created were all one-sentence stubs of very little interest to anyone who didn't already know the school. One primary reason why we've been relatively successful in getting schools kept in Australia is because we take the time to write useful and interesting articles of at least two or three paragraphs. "Troubles" edits

Hi. I saw the edit you made to the Ballynahinch article. I know you're trying to improve things, I just want to give you my thoughts. The category you have created seems to me to unnecessarily fragment information. Even adding the link would be fine, but removing information about the '97 attack. There's no logic to that. Better to provide a summary and say more information is available at article X, category Y etc. Mark83 22:20, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

Ardfern I've been de-wikilinking "The Troubles" in subheading as I've recently discovered it is against wikipedia Manual of Style guidelines. If you've many more to do, it might be advantageous to not link the Troubles in the subheading, but in the blurb underneath (or not at all - your preference). A couple of other things I've noticed about WP:MOS is that subheadings should ideally not start with the word The (although The Troubles is an obvious exception to this case) nor to include the title of the article itself. Hope this helps, and keep up the good work. :) --Mal 22:51, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

Schools

Hi Ardfern, I noticed you were beefing up some of the NI school articles, thanks for that, it's better for random page users and it should make them less likely to get attacked. As someone who believes that even smallish schools are important enough for a comprehensive project like this one, you may wish to take a look at Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2006 September 22. Kappa 17:35, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

  • Thanks Kappa, I have already been substantially attacked (see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Abercorn Primary School, but won through. Some people also seem to have trouble understanding the stub concept, which a lot of the initial primary school articles are/were. I will keep at it. Ardfern 18:45, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

Airline Callsigns

After spending many hours updating the airline callsigns against the official ICAO information and removing the links to airline codes I noticed you putting them back in again!!. Airline codes is an amateur site an not official. If you follow the Airline call sign link (which I have been adding) it links to the official sites. Any comment ? MilborneOne 21:36, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

OK I understand where you are coming from, just wanted to make the point that the reference site you are using is not official. But as you say it does have all three items. I will try not to remove any more of your links but I have updated all the asian, australasia and african airlines and some of europe ! You might be interested in http://www.eurocontrol.int/icaoref/icao_8585_aircraft_operators_browse.jsp which has the official ICAO data on codes and callsigns. Also note that I have also been removing the code data when it also appears in the infobox. MilborneOne 21:56, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
Just to comment on my comment ! after thinking about it overnight - what is really needed is to quote the ICAO Document 8585 as a reference document on each article instead of the airlinecodes website as it is THE source for ICAO codes and callsigns. MilborneOne 07:24, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

TAROM Fleet change info

Can you be more specific in pointing the exact source of the information regarding TAROM's fleet changes ? There is no info on the official site [1] and from my knowledge the IL62 and the BACs are discontinued from some time now (at least 10 years). Thank you Cristibur 00:28, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

  • The Il-62 and BAC One-Eleven information are from Flight International magazine, issue dated 3-9 October 2006, as the reference says. They were compiled from the Flight Acas database and the information is correct to August 2006. The Il-62 ref is on page 68 of the magazine and BAC One-Eleven ref is page 40. Hope this helps. Ardfern 14:59, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

Hi, Ardfern. I think we have a strange situation here. The reference you cited is a printed material, the information is not available on the net, so it is not instantly verifiable; Even so, I have serious doubts that this information is accurate, since I am a Romanian aviation fan and, by consequence, (I believe) I am up-to-date regarding Tarom-related topics. Anyway, there is nothing to do for now, I will just add a question mark on this issue and we'll see, time will tell. Greetings Cristibur, 23:20 25 October 2006 (UTC)

Kenn Borek Air

I'm curious about the fleet update. Your figures give 17 DHC6's but KBA's site says they have 35. Cheers. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 04:57, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

I think I found the cause of the difference. It appears that Borek are counting Aklak Airs aircraft as part of their own fleet. A look at the Aklak DC3T page shows that the link to the gallery leads back to the Kenn Borek site. Also, when I came to work and was looking over the daily aircraft movement log it shows a AKK DHC6 arrival. Yet the only DH6 here is painted black and red (not white) and says "Kenn Borek" on it. Don't know why I didn't think of that before as they quite often come in and out under the two different companies names. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 07:27, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

Regarding this edit, do you consider the Caribbean Airlines article to be inadequate support for the statement? Guettarda 22:53, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

  • Regarding this edit - the Caribbean Airlines article in itself is inadequate support, but the two references it contains are adequate support - these references could simply be duplicated on the BWIA article and so a verifiable source would be there. Ardfern 23:21, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
So why leave the tag there, rather than fixing it? I don't understand why you didn't do that in the first place anyway - you have a much better sense of what you are looking for in a reference than I would. Guettarda 14:52, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
  • I didn't fix the ref myself as I am amending fleet info on virtually every airline article on Wikipedia and don't have time at this stage to go and repair every lack of reference fault I find in hundreds of articles. It should have been referenced in the first place. Fixed properly now. Ardfern 22:27, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your edits to the page - but I do differ with regards to the facts. See here [2]. It makes no mention of a 747-300 (except 1 that has been stored). Given that, I cannot find any evidence on www.flysaa.com. The B747SP has been donated to a museum - no longer in active service (no active duty). I understand that the A320 order has been cancelled. I have reverted in the meanwhile - hopefully an accurate resource can be found. -- Chris Lester talk 05:47, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

The Troubles in Tynan

Your article The Troubles in Tynan has been put up for deletion, and they are proposing looking at the rest of the series to see if they should be deleted as well. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/The Troubles in Tynan. Ben W Bell talk 16:15, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

Ben. Very many thanks for the heads up. I've been through this before - see my comments on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/The Troubles in Tynan. People seem to have lost the whole stub concept and are keener to delete than add constructively to the development of articles. I am really fed up wasting time on these useless debates instead of writing articles. Sorry for the rant. Thanks again. Ardfern 16:34, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

Just contacted the originator of the deletion proposal on her talk page, suggesting that a word with the author of the Tynan article first might have been courteous, only to be accused of harassment. Interesting. Looks like I may have to waste a lot of time on this. Ardfern 16:58, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
You have probably noticed the Wiki-destructors have been fought off successfully on this topic. Thanks again - much appreciated. Ardfern 23:28, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

Tynan

Please don't harass me on my talk page because you don't like something I have done - there is a perfectly proper forum for the discussion and that is here. I see here that your view on these pages isn't the consensus at all, which you seemingly ignored. --SandyDancer 16:45, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

America West Airlines

America West Airlines they are not defunct. Their certificate is still active and being used. Vegaswikian 23:00, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

Troubles articles

Adfern, I have started to tag the stubs you have created about "the Troubles" with this {{Primarysources}}. The reason should be self-explanatory. I really take issue with these article remaining as they are - with one sole citation being a single primary source. --SandyDancer 10:22, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

I believe that they are the same company as MAXjet Airways and therefore it should be redirected. --Chocolatepizza 19:16, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

JumpJet

Hi. I saw you new article JumpJet. It is very dated. Do they still exist? I tried to phone their 0800 number to check, but the number is no longer active. Moriori 21:33, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

Hardly "very dated" with a 2006 ref in it. Website is still running and has 2006 dates on it. Looks like it is still going to be set up. Happy for article to be updated when new info comes along, or for it to be moved to defunct airlines if it is never established. Ardfern 21:39, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
I don't know what you consider to be dated. The article says the airline is "planning to operate services between New Zealand and Australia starting in 2005". The website you mention says very little, but directs potential customers to other airlines. As the 0800 number doesn't work, I'm not going to put in a toll call to Wellington. In the meantime, I'll give the article a haircut. Moriori 22:43, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

Tropical Airways (Haiti)

I noticed you added relatively current fleet info for Tropical Airways, sourced from a reputable magazine. However, the airline's website has gone away and I can't find much evidence that the airline is still in business. I've decided to update the page with the possibility that the airline is defunct. I'm also going to remove the broken web link. But you may want to check that copy of "Flight International" again and fix/reert this if it offers better insight to the health (or lack thereof) for this airline. the Troubles

Why did you start at 2+ deaths? why did you not INCLUDE EVERYONE that died? Culnacréann 19:42, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

  • I did 2+ deaths because I am one person and could not do all of them myself at this stage (I do have a life outside Wikiland). The ultimate intention would be to record all deaths, but others disagree and I have already had people seeking to remove all of the articles. See: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/The Troubles in Moneymore and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/The Troubles in Tynan. Of course, you could always give us a hand, rather than complaining that I haven't covered everything - Wikipedia is a collaborative effort and aticles can be expanded at any time. Look forward to your help. Ardfern 19:52, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
You said, "The ultimate intention would be to record all deaths, but others disagree" Who ever said that they disagreed is either a bad person or has no common sense (form of intelligence) Either you include ALL or include NONE, no half way house. It is verging on discrimination to the victims and their families that are not included. I like fair play, but there has never been much of it northern Ireland. The truth will prevail.
