2010 Archive

Hello. I am contacting you because you are listed as a participant for WikiProject Norway, and the above-mentioned article is sourced by all Norwegian-language references. Moreover, the references do not appear to support notability; they might be mere trivial references to the subject. Since these sources are all offline, and I do not speak or read Norwegian, I'm hoping whether you can assist me in determining whether the article qualifies for speedy deletion. Many thanks! The article 1360 in Ireland has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non notable. Virtual nothing in article.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Safiel (talk) 06:31, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

You are now a Reviewer

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 18:29, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

A-Class opinion needed for British Airways page

I've been doing a lot of work on the British Airways page since June 5 2010 to get the page to A-Class from GA-Class but I need two uninvolved editors to say yes or no to the change. You seem to have done a lot in this field so I thought you would probably be best qualified to help me with this. You don't have to do it right away but a quick response would be helpful. The review page is here and I've done all the work outlined by SidewinderX (talk) even though it isn't all scored through. Thanks in advance, Plane Person (talk) 19:03, 30 June 2010 (UTC).

I have nominated Alaska Seaplane Service, an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Alaska Seaplane Service (3rd nomination). Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.

Please contact me if you're unsure why you received this message. Beeblebrox (talk) 17:54, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Peatlands Park, and it appears to include a substantial copy of http://www.peatlandsni.gov.uk/education/about.htm. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. See our copyright policy for further details. (If you own the copyright to the previously published content and wish to donate it, see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials for the procedure.)

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot (talk) 16:23, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

Copyright block

You have been blocked from editing for a period of a week in accordance with Wikipedia's blocking policy for violating copyright policy by copying text into Wikipedia from sources. You have been previously warned that this is against policy, yet you've still continued to do it, most recently with Peatlands Park (created today) and Ballypatrick Forest (created yesterday). Once the block has expired, you are welcome to make constructive contributions. Please take this opportunity to be sure you understand our copyright policy and our policies regarding how to quote non-free text. If you believe this block is unjustified, you may contest the block by adding the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} below, but you should read our guide to appealing blocks first. Copyright investigation

Hello, Ardfern. This message is being sent to inform you that there currently is a discussion at Contributor copyright investigations concerning your contributions in relation to Wikipedia's copyrights policy. The listing can be found here. For some suggestions on responding, please see Responding to a CCI case. Thank you. Theleftorium (talk) 09:38, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

  • As a long time contributor, I was very distressed at this block and investigation. I have written hundreds of articles over the last five years, largely in the same style and all carefully referenced and attributed. Apart from the plagiarism you mentioned (on a minor article in 2005 when I had only started making contributions) I have never had any adverse comments from administrators or queries raised over plagiarism or copyright. I am perfectly happy to go back over all articles I contributed and review and change them as necessary, if you could give advice on what exactly is being done incorrectly and guidance on how it should be corrected. I would be happy for you to take, for instance, the apparently offending Ballypatrick Forest article and show me how in fact it should be written to avoid copyright violation. I genuinely do want to understand how articles should be written to avoid copyright violation and at the same time ensure that they are properly referenced and thus attributed. In view of my willingness to correct all faults in all articles I have contributed, I would ask for the block to be removed (subject to the appropriate advice and guidance requested above).Ardfern (talk) 19:46, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
    • Hi Ardfern. First of all, thank you for wanting to improve yourself and fix your mistakes. That is much appreciated. In response to your comment about never having had any queries raised over plagiarism or copyright: You have previously been notified of the copyright policy at User_talk:Ardfern/Archive3#Desertcreat, User_talk:Ardfern#Ulster_History_Circle (an admin even removed the copyright violation from the article), and User_talk:Ardfern#October_2009 (although not directed at you, it clearly stated that "For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of article content such as sentences or images.") I will explain some of my concerns below, but I strongly advise you to read WP:Plagiarism and WP:Copyrights before then. Theleftorium (talk) 19:56, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

As you suggested, let's take Ballypatrick Forest as an example. The source says:

This impressive archway provides passage for both the Burn and the Forest Drive while high above speeds the traffic on the A2. [...] The Drive then reaches its highest level (300m) with a number of vista car parks [...] Descending from the high level, the drive passes near the site of a 'Double Horned Cairn'. [...] dating back to 2000BC, containing two burial chambers. [...] The Drive now continues downhill to enter Glenmakeeran with its associated stream, which eventually flows into the Carey River. [...] a series of small car parks and picnic areas with views of Knocklayd Mountain. [...] towards the exit it passes and extensive area of open bog land which is still utilised for cutting turf [...] The Drive finally returns to the A2 half a mile north of the entrance.[1]

The article says:

The impressive archway of Corratavey Bridge provides passage for both the Burn and the drive (along the paved bed of the stream) while high above is the A2 road. The drive then reaches its highest level (300m) with a number of vista car parks. Descending, the drive passes near the site of a Double Horned Cairn dating back to 2000BC and containing two burial chambers. The drive continues downhill to enter Glenmakeeran with its associated stream, which eventually flows into the Carey River, and its Wildlife Trail. Here are a series of small car parks and picnic areas with views of Knocklayd Mountain. Towards the exit the drive passes an extensive area of open bog land which is still utilised for local turf cutting. The Drive finally returns to the A2 half a mile north of the entrance.

Do you see the problem here? The entire paragraph has been copied almost verbatim from the source, and almost no efforts have been made to paraphrase it. By copying text like this without paraphrasing, you are violating our policies and the US copyright law. The article Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2009-04-13/Dispatches contains some suggestions for paraphrasing material from sources that may be helpful, beginning under "Avoiding plagiarism". This source is also helpful. Theleftorium (talk) 20:17, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

  • Read all the advice you suggested and completely understand the issue here. Your advice and explanation are very clear and very helpful. I will be very much more careful in future and will ensure no re-occurrence. I am happy to go back now to revise earlier articles including Ballypatrick Forest, Peatlands park etc should you decide to remove the block. many thanks for the constructive and helpful approach.Ardfern (talk) 20:30, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
    • Thank you. I have unblocked your account. When you rewrite an article, make sure that you follow the instructions on the template that was placed over it. I or another editor will take a look at your rewrite before moving it to the namespace. If there are any further issues, I'll do my best to explain them to you. :) Theleftorium (talk) 20:38, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
      • Many thanks. I have also been looking at Good Articles for inspiration. I won't let you down. Ardfern (talk) 20:43, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
        • By the way, keep in mind that paraphrasing can be difficult at first, and may take some time to learn. Don't be discouraged if your first attempts still contain some problems. Regards, Theleftorium (talk) 20:46, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
  • The requested copyright investigation is now open at Wikipedia:Contributor copyright investigations/Ardfern. You are not only welcome, but encouraged to clean any problems that are identified. If you are interested in doing so, please keep an eye on that page and its subpages, as you will not be notified of issues found in that content. We have quite a backlog at CCI, so there are good odds that this investigation will be open for some time before completion. My past experience suggests that you might expect flurries of activity followed by long periods of dormancy. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 17:05, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

Cork city cats

Hi. Given the absence of an edit summary it's not clear why you removed all but one cat here. Can you help me understand the rationale? Particularly concerned that Category:Cities in the Republic of Ireland is down one (quite obvious) member. As is Category:Towns and villages in County Cork, Category:County towns in the Republic of Ireland, etc. If the rationale is that the Cork cat is a subcat of these cats, then I would point you to WP:EPON - which states:

an article should not be excluded from any set category on the grounds that its eponymous category is made a "subcategory" of that category

Airline articles without any sources

Hi Ardfern, I'm currently working on adding sources to airline articles that are totally lacking them so far. During editing, I noticed that you created quite a few such articles in 2005, some of which are still unreferenced. Would you mind stating your souces? I've made a list of the airline articles in question here. Per aspera ad Astra (talk) 11:57, 23 October 2010 (UTC)

The article Athena Air Services has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

tagged as hoax; please provide reliable source evidence that this airline exists or existed

—KuyaBriBriTalk 19:19, 25 October 2010 (UTC)

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

A tag has been placed on Peace Air (Sri Lanka) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article, which appears to be about a real person, individual animal(s), an organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content, does not indicate how or why the subject of the article is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} at the top of the article, immediately below the speedy deletion ({{db-...}}) tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate), and providing your reasons for contesting on the article's talk page, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. You may freely add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

Hi Ardfern, I've just added some basic sources to an article which you created back in 2005, and had been PRODed. Still, I think the airline might not be notable at all, as it was extremely short-lived. Maybe you want to improve the article by adding reliable sources so that is passes WP:CORP? Please not that the matter is also discussed here. Per aspera ad Astra (talk) 15:08, 17 November 2010 (UTC)

Great PopMart photos!

I left this message on your Commons account, but I'm not sure if you saw it or not. I really thought your PopMart photos were superb! I'm so glad you added them, it was just what we needed for the PopMart Tour article. I was wondering if you had any photos from the Zoo TV Tour that you would be willing to upload, as Zoo TV Tour is really in need of a clear picture of the stage/set. Thanks!
