Olympic issue with editor

Thanks for your neutral help , but it seems the criteria that the IOC use in realtion to NOCs has been total missed by the other editor . Your example , Puerto Rico and Jnestorius example of Palestine - which isnt even recognised as a terriroty or political entity yet , I taught would show where the by-laws in the charter dont always flow with convention . He has edited the same phrase in the OCI page , I edited out and guess what , yep its back . Question about flag copyright

I was wondering if you could give me some advice. I was trying to create a country data template for Nassau County, New York. The flag is currently marked as fair use, but I'm not sure if that is the correct status because the flag has existed since 1899 (according to [1]). This would make the image essentially a faithful reproduction of something with an expired copyright. Do you know if this is a valid analysis in terms of how Wikipedia deals with flag copyrights? West Germany country data

Hi! Is it possible that you include the rugby union code ( | link alias-rugby union = Germany national rugby union team ) to the Template:Country data West Germany to avoid redirections? I'm asking you because the West Germany national rugby union team does not exist (it redirects to the Germany national rugby union team) and that template already has the codes for tennis, basketball, football, ice hockey, etc. Apart from the fact I can't edit it myself. MSU Interview

Dear Andrwsc,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

• Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
• Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
• All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
• All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
• The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. I don't think it's necessary to add any footnote to that list. It's all about official representation by National Olympic Committees, not by ethnic nationality. The Korean Olympic Committee was not recognized by the IOC until 1948. Flag of None is not a real flag, so having it visible as an icon is misleading for an encyclopedia. Flag placeholder has a transparent background, so nothing is visible in the unusual instances when {{flag}} etc. are used without parameters. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 18:46, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi Andrwsc, well, that doesn't make any sense to me. A transparent flag is no flag either! Why should I place a flag which has no background? Than I insert nothing (no flag) instead. The idea of the icon with the question mark is to show the user that there is an info missing (means: Can you help?). So some might start a research for info. The other thing is that there was no talk about changing. This is at least what I expect to a free and democratic encyclopedia. Looks to me that you've made a solitary decision and users are wondering about that. So when I want to show that a nationality which is unknown and want someone to research, I'm using now the Pic instead of the EMPTY Template. This was discussed years ago at Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Icons. Without any kind of legend, readers will have to guess what that symbol means, and guessing is obviously a bad idea for an encyclopedia. Only editors who have encountered that image before will understand it's meaning. The use of a transparent image means that nothing will be seen on the web page or the printed page, which is a more desirable situation when a flag is unknown, or when editors accidentally or mistakenly use {{flagicon}} incorrectly without any parameter. Using File:Flag of None.svg violates the Manual of Style—a set of guidelines that was created by a "free and democratic" process. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 16:55, 4 June 2012 (UTC)

Reuse of IOC country code: Effect on Template:FlagIOC and others

It is exceedingly likely that IOC intends to reuse the IOC country code IOA, but not the designation "Individual Olympic Athletes". Instead the athletes competing under the olympic flag will compete as "Independent Olympic Athletes". See active discussions with links to sources here and here. As you have worked with and protected Template:FlagIOC do you have any idea on how to fix this template, and other templates that use the IOC code as main input, so the correct designation will appear for both Individual and Independent Olympic Athletes. 88.88.160.158 (talk) 11:22, 20 July 2012 (UTC)

 Fixed in this edit, which restored the infobox to its original design before an edit by Violetriga in October 2011. The header should not be linked; that's what the "(summary)" link further down in the infobox is used for. There's a code requirement for the existence of a 2012 Summer Olympics medal count page so that the infobox link to the medal table is active. All other medal table pages have a redirect from a "... medal count" page to their current name, which renders the link active in those cases, except for 2012. Template:flaglink/core

I noticed that you were the creator and the main editor of Template:flaglink/core. Hopefully you can help me or direct me to the proper area. I am looking for a way to parameterize the link that accompanies the flag to change based on both the name of the sport and the year. Specifically, {{Bk|USA}} currently renders United States. However, I would like the generic link United States men's national basketball team to instead be changed to the year-specific team article, 2012 United States men's Olympic basketball team. Not sure if a brute force approach to just allow a user-specified link or a more generic solution that allows for a year prefix is best. Well, it may not look elegant, but I can't think of another instance where national team articles exist for a specific year and a specific event. If the article name had started with "United States..." then you could use {{flaglink}} to simplify it somewhat, but "United States" appears in the middle of the article name. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 18:46, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

You have, I notice, been active on this template in the past. Could I draw your attention to the issues I have raised at the associated talk page. The removal of italics, I would hope, is not controversial: the triple indication of nationality certainly seems overkill to me, although it is also part of the related Template:FlagIOCathlete and Template:FlagIOCteam. olympics history

Finland's Olympic committee was founded in 1907. Cyprus one was founded in 1974. But in Finland example are mentioned previous Olympic games from 1896 to 1904. The idea is that the list of Games in the infobox starts with their first appearance, and does not ignore any "gaps" — those are identified in an alternate font color. Note- only the IOC doesnt make the schedule, many sporting bodies have authoriy to do so oo (a la sailing). As said if its redundan tnow, then ALL the calendars are redundant. There is different data on this. See the table that lists the ates where possible. Where is the source that says there will be one (and only one) event final in sailing on August 21, one (and only one) event final in Athletics on the same day, etc.? Getting Wikimedians to the Olympic Games

Hi. I am part of an effort to get Wikimedians access to the 2016 Summer Olympics as accredited reporters and photographers. Part of this effort includes covering the 2012 Summer Paralympics. Two Wikimedians have credentials to attend these games as reporters through Wikimedia Australia. As English Wikipedia does not allow original reporting, this is largely through Wikinews with a project page found at Wikinews:Paralympic Games. Virgin Islands

Instead of doing grumpy, we better try to solve the problem. It isn't very helpful to break some articles to solve others. The link you gave to Virgin Islands at the 2012 Summer Olympics seems to work properly, although there is a problem at 2002 Winter Olympics. The problem I try to solve is a link to a disambiguation page at Template:Infobox Paralympics Virgin Islands. Somewhere someone made a mistake, but where and how can we solve that? I just looked at 2002 Winter Olympics and only see the problem you just created with your revert (in the "Participating Nations" section). Please clarify exactly what problem(s) you are trying to fix, but in the meantime, please make no additional edits to the Country IOC alias ISV meta-template. The point is that you have the British Virgin Islands and the United States Virgin Islands. To my opinion, many article incorrectly point to articles "Virgin Islands at ..." instead of "United States Virgin Islands at ...". Redirects or namechanges can fix this. Changing the return value from the ISV meta-template does not create these redirects, but it certainly creates redlinks for articles that do not exist, so please stop editing that template until you know what the effects are. If you want to change the Olympic convention of the USVI team being called simply "Virgin Islands" at the Olympics (hence, our Wikipedia articles follow that naming convention), then discussion at WT:WikiProject Olympics would be prudent before boldly moving any pages. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 00:05, 21 August 2012 (UTC)

Then please fix the link in Template:Infobox Paralympics Virgin Islands, where you now recreated the link to the disambiguation page Flag of the Virgin Islands. You can't create new problems to solve others. The basic problem, IMHO, is the incorrect linking to "Virgin Islands at ...". The Virgin Islands are not always the United States Virgin Islands, the British Virgin Islands also exist. I will slowly fix this pro-USA bias over the coming days (surely not tonight, as bedtime looms). I hope that not someone else of WikiProject Disambiguation will try to solve the problem. Country data error

Actually, I've read up on this and according to some documentation I found (in Bulgarian), the red CoA only lasted a couple of months in 1948, and it's unclear if it was ever added to the flag. So, actually, don't worry about changing the template for now. I'll research it further and get in touch again if I can find evidence for changes needing to be made. ROC/TPE

Currently, Chinese Taipei at the Olympics is a mess. The IOC does not separate Taiwan's participation between Republic of China and Chinese Taipei. I think we should only have a combined infobox under Chinese Taipei with Republic of China asterisked, as with many others where NOCs were changed for the entity remained the same (Zaire, etc.). The template is protected for Wikipedia:High-risk templates reasons; it is transcluded on >3000 pages. I don't see the need to unprotect to make changes, since we have sandbox & test case mechanisms to try things out first, then {{edit protected}} when there is consensus to apply the new version.

But I'm not sure why the proposed changes are necessary. Certainly there are non-trivial changes to the rendered output:

• the horizontal rules within the infobox are gone (this helps separate the medalist section and especially the previous/next navigation section),
• the flag icons for the medal winners are no longer left-aligned,
• unnecessary bullet characters now appear before the flag icons for medal winners,
• when the longnames=yes parameter is used, the flag icons on the second line are no longer indented,
• the text size is slightly smaller.

I really do not like these changes (except for one: I like that the Venue/Date/etc. field labels are now left-aligned). The only reason for making them seems to be because of an objection to using direct HTML markup instead of the "modern" {{infobox}} meta-template helper. Is that really a problem? I note that many common infoboxes need (e.g. {{Infobox settlement}}) to use direct HTML markup to achieve their design goals (which may not be possible when using the meta-template). Just use {{flagicon| }} (i.e. without any parameter) instead of {{flagicon|none}}. That produces a blank space, as shown between the two arrows below:

About three years ago, that wiki markup used to render File:Flag of None.svg () but it was changed to File:Flag placeholder.svg because of a consensus discussion at WT:MOSFLAG (I believe) where it was agreed that "fake flags" shouldn't be used to represent unknowns, so it is better to display nothing instead. The current placeholder image is a transparent SVG without border, so it's even better than a white flag for that purpose (since the default page background color on Wikipedia is not pure white). But there is no country/province/city etc. in the world that has a big white question mark on a gray background for its flag, which is why the Manual of Style says not to use an invented image in the context of a flag. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 17:21, 6 May 2013 (UTC)

I think three years is enough time to revisit the idea. Having File:Flag of None.svg () is less obtrusive in tables in such where a flag image is missing than {{Expand section|date|reason=Missing flag}} is and informs people that there "should" be a flag there and if they can find one, please upload it or fix the template call so that it pulls the flag that belongs. Also, I see no reference of any discussions about using the File:Flag of None.svg placeholder as a note to inform other users that there should be a flag there and it needs to be updated anywhere on WT:MOSFLAG or its associated page WP:MOSFLAG. I would not be opposed to modifying to link to go to a documentation explaining why it is that image and what should be done to fix it to the correct flag that belongs there. Either way, I'm requesting a WP:DRV#Temporary_undeletion and an RfC to discuss it as I feel it is likely beyond the scope of something that just the two of us should figure out. Thank you, and note the code below that File:Flag placeholder.svg you referenced above isn't even used in this template as you think it is.

You misread my comment. I said that {{flagicon| }} (i.e. without any parameter) produces a blank space, whereas it used to produce the placeholder before it was changed about three years ago. What I didn't explicitly explain was that particular markup uses Template:Country data (in the same way that {{flagicon|none}} would use Template:Country data none) and the placeholder was used until January 2010, with the change based on this discussion. (My mistake, earlier I had thought it was discussed at WT:MOSICON, but it was at WT:WPFT.) Template:Country data Republic of Ireland

The problem with Template:Country data Republic of Ireland including a shortname alias = Ireland was that because there is also a Template:Country data Ireland, it prevented the {{Navy|Republic of Ireland}} from coming out correct. altlink is only necessary if the country data template is used by flag templates that render a suffix, such as {{fb}} for "Nation national football team" etc. The Georgia state template wouldn't need that, so it keeps the template cleaner by not including that line. Similarly, altvar is used in cases where the national team does not conform to the standard naming convention. See Template:flaglink/core to see how this works. Palestine country data

Hi Andrwsc, an editor recently emailed me to express surprise at your edit to Palestine's country data. I must say I agree. While I'd really prefer a merge of State of Palestine and Palestinian territories, for now they're separate, and the latter has been the phrase favored over several requested moves of Palestine topics. See, for example, Talk:Prostitution in the Palestinian territories. If the parent articles were to be merged, I wouldn't oppose the "State of Palestine" title, however. Following WP:BRD, I've gone ahead with the R, so here's the D. What do you think? We could also open up discussion on the template's talk page. --BDD (talk) 21:33, 6 June 2013 (UTC)

My rationale is that State of Palestine is the most appropriate target article when used with a flag icon. We already have Template:Country data State of Palestine, Template:Country data Palestinian territories and Template:Country data Palestinian National Authority in use for articles that explicitly use those terms:

• {{flag|State of Palestine}} → State of Palestine
• {{flag|Palestinian territories}} → Palestinian territories
• {{flag|Palestinian National Authority}} → Palestinian National Authority

So really, the question is which of these three is the best target for when {{flag|Palestine}} is used in an article. And perhaps there is another question—which is the correct template to use in a specific context? For example, Bethlehem is listed as a twin city in the Grenoble article, with a link to Palestinian Authority. Is that the best choice? Since December 2012, UN and ISO relate by "Palestine" to State of Palestine [2], and most international organizations and countries follow; Palestinian government in Ramallah also refers to itself as "State of Palestine" (see President decree,Prime Minister's new logo. The designation of "State of Palestine" replaced both "Palestinian Authority" and "Palestinian territories, Occupied" (also "Palestinian-controlled territories"), which are now obsolete terms; they can of course continue referring to the Palestinian Authority between 1993-2012.Greyshark09 (talk) 20:52, 10 June 2013 (UTC)

Part of the problem is that ideally, the country article should just be at Palestine (we could displace the current occupant to Palestine (region)). I went ahead and proposed the merge of State of Palestine and Palestinian territories, so if that's successful, the country data issue neatly resolves itself in favor of whichever title is chosen. If that doesn't happen (and I'm not especially hopeful), I'm not sure I still feel so strongly about this. Hey Andrwsc

I'm sending you this because you've made quite a few edits to the template namespace in the past couple of months. If I've got this wrong, or if I haven't but you're not interested in my request, don't worry; this is the only notice I'm sending out on the subject :).

So, as you know (or should know - we sent out a centralnotice and several watchlist notices) we're planning to deploy the VisualEditor on Monday, 1 July, as the default editor. For those of us who prefer markup editing, fear not; we'll still be able to use the markup editor, which isn't going anywhere.

What's important here, though, is that the VisualEditor features an interactive template inspector; you click an icon on a template and it shows you the parameters, the contents of those fields, and human-readable parameter names, along with descriptions of what each parameter does. Personally, I find this pretty awesome, and from Monday it's going to be heavily used, since, as said, the VisualEditor will become the default.

The thing that generates the human-readable names and descriptions is a small JSON data structure, loaded through an extension called TemplateData. I'm reaching out to you in the hopes that you'd be willing and able to put some time into adding TemplateData to high-profile templates. It's pretty easy to understand (heck, if I can write it, anyone can) and you can find a guide here, along with a list of prominent templates, although I suspect we can all hazard a guess as to high-profile templates that would benefit from this. Hopefully you're willing to give it a try; the more TemplateData sections get added, the better the interface can be. If you run into any problems, drop a note on the Feedback page.

Criterion of country templates

Hi Andrwsc, I am wondering which countries (or territories) are appropriate for the list of inline templates linking country articles. I did find Bonaire on the list of FIFA country codes#Non-FIFA member codes. It is said in the paragraph that Bonaire is not a FIFA member but the code BOE is used in some particular cases. So would you please give me some advice on whether a country should enter the list? If necessary, I will delete the page of zh:Template:BOE I created on the Chinese language Wikipedia. Chinese Wikipedia is completely independent, so you can do whatever you want there. As for the Bonaire code, it might be useful to add Template:Country data BOE as a redirect to Template:Country data Bonaire, if it is needed for football match results since {{fb|BOE}} might be desired as an alternative to {{fb|Bonaire}}. But there is no reason to create {{BOE}} since there is no ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 code for Bonaire, and that code would only ever be used in a football (non-FIFA) context where Template:fb would be used to render the flag instead. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 16:19, 14 October 2013 (UTC)
