Great to see you![edit]

Hey there! Thank you for your kind email yesterday. I am glad that you had a good time at the Collaborative Editing Training. Great to meet you in person, and I hope we can collaborate on something in the future!

If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and ask your question there. See you soon! Abd Alsattar Ardati (talk) 13:02, 10 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Abd. I am trying to reply to this message to practice, I don't think I've got the hang of the talk pages yet. I certainly don't know how to sign it as I don't have the curly symbol on my keyboard. Best wishes, Alison

I have been practising this evening Abd Alsattar Ardati (talk). I have found the symbol needed to put my signature on a message. Best wishes, Alison hunter (talk) 22:34, 10 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I am glad that you are making progress! Abd Alsattar Ardati (talk) 12:35, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Abd Abd Alsattar Ardati (talk) Anne, Sue and I are looking for the template you gave us for an article. Can you please remind us where to find it. The one that gives a structure for outlining a biography article? Hope you can help. Many thanks, Alison Alison hunter (talk) 14:47, 13 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, it's ok, we have found it. I think we're ok. Sorry! Alison hunter (talk) 14:54, 13 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

March 2020[edit]

@Gryllida: I think I have learned how to reply to messages now! I really appreciate your swift and helpful response to my call for help. Many thanks! Alison Alison hunter (talk) 17:27, 13 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I thought this was one of the lessons in The Wikipedia Adventure. I'll assume you know how to open your user talk page for editing.
Anyway, when someone leaves a message on your talk page, you can reply by using the {{reply}} template (this is so they get a notification that you've responded). So to reply to me you'd do something like:
: {{reply|jmcgnh}} I got your message and see how to do a reply. ~~~~
You insert your response starting on a new line below the message.
The colon produces an indent; you use more colons to get more indents, based on how deeply indented the thing you're replying to is. There should be no space before the colon.
Don't forget the four tildes at the end, that inserts your signature. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 19:17, 10 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Gryllida. Thank you for your help. I am trying it out now. Kind regards, Alison --~~~~
You're getting closer but several things went wrong with your latest effort.
First, you put spaces at the front of your line. This triggers the software to treat your addition as not just indented, but also in a completely different style. You should be using the colon character (:) for indent, not spaces or tabs.
Next, you named Gryllida but you did not include one of the templates around their username which would cause them to be notified that you have responded, nor did you mention them in your edit summary - the other way to trigger a notification.
Finally, you put nowiki tags around your tildes which prevents them from being interpreted as a signature (and also would prevent a notification, had you used the {{reply}} template). This leaves your response unsigned. BTW: there's a button in the editor to supply a signature, which helps when you are editing on a keyboard (such as on a phone) where the tilde character is not there or hard to get to.
So, you still have a few things to correct and then you'll be all set to reply to people's messages on your talk page! — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 21:28, 10 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for taking the time to help me. I can't find the tilde character on my keyboard. Nor can I find square brackets. I shall try cutting and pasting from your reply... — jmcgnh

Can you tell me if this is any better? And do you know how I get the tilde character on a MacBook? Best wishes, Alison

I know how to put my signature now. Alison hunter (talk) 22:32, 10 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, it looks like you've got the signature part down. And maybe the indentation thing with colons. Still not so good on notifying.

On my old iBook, the tilde is on a key just below the ESC key, but I can't say for sure that Apple didn't use a different layout for MacBooks and, of course, there are country- and language-specific keyboard layouts that make it difficult to give absolute directions.

Copy-pasting someone's signature should be avoided. I removed part of what you copied so that it would not mess up formatting for the rest of the page. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 21:03, 11 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I am hoping this reply notifies you? {{reply}} Kind regards, Alison Alison hunter (talk) 17:10, 13 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No, I don't think that worked. Trying again @Jmcgnh: Alison Alison hunter (talk) 17:13, 13 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think I should have typed something slightly different @Jmcgnh: Hopefully I've got it this time! Alison Alison hunter (talk) 17:16, 13 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent. Thank you for asking for help with this, and for your commitment to finish. Welcome to talk pages. :-) Regards, Gryllida (talk) 21:51, 13 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Notifications received. I think you're there now. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 05:22, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Learning to use the talk pages[edit]

I am having a go at using the talk pages. I find the "edit source" mode difficult. I hope it will become more intuitive. Alison hunter (talk) 22:31, 10 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Alison hunter, I'm a host over at the Teahouse and I ended up here on your talk page after reading your question. Some code-proficient editors have created scripts to make the Wikipedia experience more comfortable. If I may suggest two: Cacycle's wikEd editor and Enterprisey's Reply link. The former will create some editing toolbars in source code editing which will have buttons that you can click on to format text quickly (as well as highlighting different types in different colours) while the latter will create reply links at the end of people's comments on discussion/talk pages so that you don't need to go to a different editing window to do so. Installation instructions can be found on their respective pages.
Let me know if you have any questions and I will try to answer them to the best of my ability. Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬📝) 05:35, 15 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much Tenryuu! . I will probably take you up on your offer! I have lots of question Alison hunter (talk) 22:23, 15 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How are you getting on?[edit]

Just to see how you are getting on Anne? Annecbarr Alison hunter (talk) 14:29, 13 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

no bad Annecbarr (talk) 14:32, 13 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Annecbarr: Hi Anne. I have realised that I can't see your sandbox. I think that is because it isn't published yet. Does the word "sandbox" still appear in red at the top of your page? If so, can you publish it please? Then Sue and I can work on the template with you. Thanks! Alison Alison hunter (talk) 17:24, 13 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Alison hunter: Alison I just opened my sandbox and the template isn't there! think maybe it should've been published before I closed the page. Not sure I'll remember how to get it backAnnecbarr (talk) 18:41, 13 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Annecbarr: Yes, I think if you don't publish what's in your sandbox it disappears. Have you published your sandbox now? Is the word "sandbox" on the top of your screen blue or red? Mine is blue, so maybe I can send you a link to it. I might try that. Alison hunter (talk) 18:42, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Jessie Kerr Lawson[edit]

Hi: I think you are right, she deserves a page. Here's a draft page for Jessie Kerr Lawson you can edit, in case you have not already started. Draft space is the normal way we develop articles. Let me know if you need help. ThatMontrealIP (talk) 02:12, 15 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Update: It looks like the draft was too tempting! Several other editors have improved it and it is now an article:Jessie Kerr Lawson . You are of course welcome to edit it. ThatMontrealIP (talk) 18:27, 15 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@ThatMontrealIP: It looks great! Can I please check something with you? I had understood that the way to start working on an article was to begin drafting something in my sandbox. You talk about "draft space". Is that something different? I'm VERY new to this, and have so much to learn! I'm delighted, though, that just by flagging someone up an article has appeared. Amazing! Alison hunter (talk) 19:23, 15 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@ThatMontrealIP: I have made a couple of points on the Talk page of Jessie Kerr Lawson's page. I wonder if you would mind checking them for me at some point? Perhaps you could coach me on how to make the necessary edits that I have picked up on? No worries if you don't fancy doing this. Kind regards, Alison Alison hunter (talk) 22:19, 15 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Good question. User:Alison hunter/sandbox is called a userspace draft, and since it's in your userspace, others aren't supposed to edit it without very good reason (copyvios, WP:BLP violations, stuff like that) or asking you first. ThatMontrealIP started a similar Draft:Jessie Kerr Lawson, which indicates that the creator is ok with other people editing it without asking. In most cases it makes no difference. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 00:45, 16 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, my apologies that I did not see the sandbox article until after I had started the Draft. Articles can actually start in either place, but Draft is really the preferred location in many ways, as it encourages collaboration, as we saw here!ThatMontrealIP (talk) 01:04, 16 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Lovely, thank you both! @ThatMontrealIP:@Gråbergs Gråa Sång: Alison hunter (talk) 16:43, 16 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Alison hunter. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Princess Titaua Marama of Tahiti".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thank you for your submission to Wikipedia! —Nnadigoodluck🇳🇬 00:42, 21 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
