Some Viennese Biscuits, to keep you fed on your journey

Hey, Alison, I've just seen all the "have a good trip" messages, and have discovered that we're going to have to do without you for a few weeks. :-( Hope you have a great holiday. Thanks for your support and for all your friendliness and helpfulness on Wikipedia. Do hurry back to us — we'll miss you! ElinorD (talk) 23:16, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

  • Thanks, Elinor. It won't be long now before I'm back in Ireland, eating Jaffa Cakes and other nice things :) - Alison 00:51, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up Alison. I added my rationale and thoughts. I knew this photo would take some explaining, discussion and be the subject of talk pages, so I don't mind. Dave --David Shankbone 00:46, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

  • Dreadful Freudian slip of the week award, there, David. LOL!! I've just replied over there. I've no issues with the image whatsoever, just about its potential for use in vandalism - Alison 00:49, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
*perk* um, hello alison! Couldn't resist this one. Peace.Lsi john 00:53, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

If at first you don't succeed

LaPret (songwriter) is back, in case you don't remember. Enjoy the holiday! My Old Man's a Provo

  • Thanks, "Provo". speedy-tagged. That's cheeky beyond belief, given that the article was speedied - what - 8 times?? Had to be SALTed eventually - Alison 01:54, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
  • I'm not a Provo, I'm just the son of a Provo (actually that's given me a good idea....), count your lucky stars the band (the even more deleted Profound Intent) have now split up apparently! My Old Man's a Provo
Heh!! Thank goodness for all that. Now quit lurking about. You know what to do :) - Alison 01:58, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
Oops! You reported, I tagged and our brand-new admin deleted it. Second time in two days this article got speedied - Alison 02:00, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
Two days?!. I've got a rather big iron in the fire anyway, I'll be sure to drop you a line when it's nice and hot! My Old Man's a Provo

It'll probably take me that long to sort out, but the temperature is slowly rising. My Old Man's a Provo
:) - Alison 02:10, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
Figured you'd like that one, it has needed plenty of work for a while now. There's no point signing up and getting involved in the day-to-day grind when it's easier to work offline as I get far more done this way, plus other editors are largely on the ball for the mundane stuff anyway. My Old Man's a Provo
I'd like to see how that turns out. It's in dire need. I take your point though, although it's a pity there's no attribution, y'know? You deserve credit for the hard work and effort - Alison 02:17, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
A harassment-free time during the limited time I now spend on Wiki is more important than attribution to me. Oh and if you check the deleted history of South Capitol Recordings (also recreated by User:CrazyJay) you'll find one of the artists on the label was none other than Profound Intent. Shocked? I was.... My Old Man's a Provo

Help!

Hi Alison, I added a tag for "facts" to the Elphin, County Roscommon article and it created a non-category that contained over 20 pages! "Category:Articles with unsourced statements since July 2007" I need some expert help in sorting this out; sorry about the mess! (Sarah777 08:58, 1 July 2007 (UTC))

  • It's okay. You did nothing wrong at all. It's just that the date rolled over and you were first in the category. I'll sort it out now - Alison 09:02, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
 Done - thanks - Alison 09:05, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
Thank you! I thought I'd just pulled a wire out of the Wiki engine!(Sarah777 09:09, 1 July 2007 (UTC))

Erection

I'm thinking that having that image is going to be a losing battle. --David Shankbone 13:56, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

My objection to the image is purely one of aesthetics: it's a lousy picture. As far as using it in the article, it's redundant. However else the debate might be famed, those two points should be sufficient to have it removed from the article. Rklawton 14:03, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
Well, I'm done reverting whatever the arguments. It's just not particularly important to me, although I disagree about the lousy picture argument. --David Shankbone 17:19, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

Re: Acalamari's RfA

Hey Allie, thank you so much for your message. I have been so very impressed with your pre-admin and admin work on-site and your recent work on the unblock list. I have honestly come to hold your work, opinions, input and insight in very high regard. So, you can imagine how shocked, disheartened and horrified I was when I clicked on this new messages diff, which only showed the corrections you made to your message, and the immediate words "had to get this comment out of my system" and "Anyways - enough!" jumped off the page at me with pure horror! LOL. But thankfully, I decided to find out why I was in such strife and scrolled to the bottom of the page and continued reading your message. :D For the reasons already mentioned, your comments meant a lot and I thank you most sincerely for taking the time to come by my talk page before leaving for your break. I hope you have a fantastic break. You will certainly be missed and I'm sure we shall all be looking forward to seeing you on your return. Thanks again for taking the time to leave your message, it really was, most sincerely, very much appreciated and very valued. With best wishes, Sarah 14:29, 30 June 2007 (UTC)
P.S. I just noticed your message at the top of the page. I hope you have a very safe trip home and enjoy catching with your family. Cheers, Sarah 15:01, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

Just FYI

Unless you live under a rock, you have seen Wikipedia all over the news in the last 3 or 4 days because of the Chris Benoit story. I broke the story that someone posted about his wife's death 14 hours before the bodies were found. That story eventually got picked up by Wikinews and then every media outlet in the English speaking world. I've since received awards from both Wikinews and Wikipedia for my efforts that night. Why am I posting this here? Because on the night I posted about the oddity on Chris Benoit's talk page, I got blocked by someone who claimed it wasn't something that should be discussed here. When I challenged the block, you reviewed it and agreed with the admin who is clearly on the wrong side of history. Yahoo, Fox, ESPN, CNN, MSNBC, Wikinews and every other major media organization in the world agreed with me, while only you agreed with him. I challenge you to take the time to review the events that night and apologize for helping silence someone who was in the middle of breaking the biggest Wikipedia-related story in the website's history. Wesleymullins 04:27, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

Check who actually wrote it. You may be surprised :) Daniel 07:21, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
Oh dear. It would appear that you have been well and truly trolled, sir. I never declined your unblock. That was someone pretending to be me. The account has been indefinitely blocked for almost a week now. It wasn't me at all, it seems - Alison 07:34, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
It might be a good start if you apologized for accusing me in the wrong, and for making some of the most overblown, self-aggrandizing statements that have ever graced my talk page. You'd think that someone as well versed in diffs and edit logs as yourself would have done their homework first before writing the above screed - Alison 09:35, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
Yikes. Yes, I am sorry. I had no idea someone could pretend to be someone else here. I am not "well versed" in the ways of wikipedia. I am still learning about all this stuff. Why would someone pretend to be someone else? You do understand that if I thought you helped block me why I would have been upset about it, right? Wesleymullins 18:26, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
No problem at all. I can understand your plight, yes, and had I been the reviewing admin, I'd have looked into your case in detail. I always do on an unblock request. Re. the impersonation; that's part of a bigger case and has now been confirmed by checkuser. Abusive sock-puppetry and wikistalking is part and parcel of being an administrator, unfortunately. Not to worry - and sorry you've been through all this trouble yourself - Alison 18:29, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

Pearse

I semi-protected the page because the anon in question was continuously removing well sourced information that he didn't happen to agree with. This has been the subject of endless discussion on the talk page and the result has always been to keep the section on the sexual orientation controversy in. The editor insists we leave out any information from the only complete, widely available biography of Pearse because he asserts the author has an agenda, as if anyone doesn't have an agenda of some sort. The information is placed in context and just because he doesn't like the author doesn't mean that we should remove all information that comes from her book. Especially as his inelegant cutting rendered parts of the article meaningless. Saying "X is not a valid source" does not mean X is an invalid source. -R. fiend 20:06, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

  • I'm not sure if I follow that last line, but how and ever. This sounds from what you are saying that you semi-protected the page to block out an anon editor who is involved in a content dispute, and is in dialog. Is this the case here? - Alison 20:23, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
    • I did it to prevent a anon from continuously reverting an article against consensus. -R. fiend 20:41, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
      • So there is consensus, yes? I'm sorry, but I'm not seeing that on the talk page - Alison 20:46, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

I'm Confused!

I thought you said you were going away for a couple days.-- Hornetman16 22:28, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

  • Yep. I have to drive to LA tomorrow some time and take a plane out of here. I'm less and less on right now, though, but would like to comment on your ER if I get the chance. Cleaning the house right now, if you must know :) And getting clothes ready - Alison 22:36, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
  • Look - there's a lot I'd like to share with you on dispute resolution and co-operation. You have a problem with both of these, while it can be worked on, it's causing you conflict with other editors. You must understand that I'm not trying to attack you here; I just want you to settle in, find your niche and become a productive and happy editor - that's all. If you're constantly in battles that you feel the need to "win" (your term), then you're setting yourself up for failure and unhappiness. - Alison 22:40, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

My RfA

Thank you for participating in my RfA. It was successful, and I am now, may God have mercy on us all, an administrator. Look at all the new buttons! I had heard about 'protect,' 'block user,' and 'delete,' but no one told me about 'kill,' 'eject,' and 'purée.' Looking for a second opinion

This and Eleanor Shanley. Article is up at AFD, and I think she passes WP:N, but now that I look at the two pages, I might have to say copyvio. Very close, if not exact copies. FlowerpotmaN·(t) 00:05, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

  • She passed WP:N in my opinion, yes, but then again I'm biased as I like her and we're both Irish. Yes - copyvio. I'm going to delete back 90% of the bio. The rest is our stuff. What a pity .... It really should be nuked entirely as copyvio, but do you think you could recover it? - Alison 00:09, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
  • I scrubbed the article just now of copyvio and re-wrote the intro. It needs fleshing out but hope that will hold it for a while. - Alison 00:17, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
    • (sorry about delay; me off to bed ina second) Well, I'm not an expert on the diddly-eidles - I like it, but not an expert :O). (However one thing I do remember about her is that she was on the group that chose the final Eurovision entries for RTE this year, but do we need to bring that up? ;O) I'll take a look at it again tomorrow. AfD Help

Hi, six of my articles have put up by AfD by the same person and are being voted on all by the same persons.. I was wondering if you could look the articles over and the things written on the discussion pages and give me your honest answer as to should they be up for vote or am I being paranoid? The articles are:

Last week I lost one of my articles and I thought it was a good faith AfD but now with six more up for vote this week I think there is more behind these AfD then good faith. Callelinea 13:25, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

You were advised at that time of your first AfD that you had created other articles that also lacked notability. You were also advised that we would put just one up for AfD in order to give you time to improve it - rather than flood you with a series of AfDs. Since that time, you've failed to demonstrate the article's notability, disrupted the AfD process with numerous "keep" votes in AfD discussions for articles on other subjects lacking notability, and declared your disagreement with our WP:BIO guidelines. So now the AfD on your article closed as "delete", and additional articles have been nominated this week - just as you had been advised. We've done our best to give you the benefit of the doubt and to give you time to work on your articles. I even restored one of your articles from a speedy deletion because you promised you could improve it to meet our biographical standards. All you have managed to do is tell us how much you disagree with our notability guidelines. As I've pointed out to you before, no editor voted "keep" on your first AfD, and none are doing so now. Take the hint! Rklawton 14:29, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

Help on a... rather strange article

Hi Alison, how are you keeping? Anyway! There is a certain article, which, at one point carried a picture of two females engaging in the said articles' practice. I understand that Wikipedia does not censor, but I was just wondering if you could take a look over the article and see if everything is okay. If you have time, could you also look on the discussion page? Thank you very much, hope this doesn't waste your time. Scarian 15:55, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

  • I'm on vacation right now, unfortunately, so I don't have much on-line time here. I've no issues with the article as a subject although in its current form, is more of a dicdef than anything else. It needs serious work to be encyclopedic. Frankly, the worse thing about it is the picture which is of such a low quality as to distract from the article rather than provide any useful content. In short; add more detail and lose/change the awful pic! - Alison 16:19, 5 July 2007 (UTC)
Sorry to bother you and thanks! That was my original problem with it in the first place... The picture is indeed grotesque. Thanks again, and enjoy your holiday. Scarian 18:21, 5 July 2007 (UTC)
An editor put the picture back stating that you didn't make a ruling but rather an opinion. I decided just not to bother about it anymore. Thanks anyways. Scarian 18:58, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

Alison, I was hoping that you could help me out with a user [5] who seems to be primarily non-productive with his edits, with various spam or vandalizing of user talk pages, and some articles. Any input on your end on how to proceed? Thanks. Tiggerjay 23:00, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

Arran

Hi Alison. I would like to ask for your help with regard to the article Arran (Azerbaijan). It recently became an arena of edit war, when certain users moved it to a new title of Arran (Republic of Azerbaijan) without consensus on talk. But now it seems that a solution to the dispute, acceptable for everyone, could be moving the article to Arran, which is now a disambiguation page. The current contents of Arran can be moved to Arran (disambiguation), and the page Arran (Azerbaijan) or Arran (Republic of Azerbaijan) could be moved to Arran. I would like to keep the history of the article about Arran, and therefore I need assistance of an admin. I would appreciate if you could help. Thanks in advance. Regards, --Grandmaster 16:41, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

Please be aware this is possibly under arbitration. Vassyana 03:25, 7 July 2007 (UTC)
Yes, most users involved into editing of this article are parties to the arbcom case. I think I will have to retract my request, because one person out of six involved into the dispute objects to the move, so I'm not sure now that we have a consensus. Thanks anyway. --Grandmaster 05:32, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

As RKLawton says, it looks like a good call. This article has been a long-term source of problems with one editor unilaterally pushing their "weird science" POV against the consensus and the opinions of just about all the other editors. - Alison 20:29, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

Hello admin. Please take a look at Iranian peoples (which is a FA) where User:Babakexorramdin is destroying the quality of this Featured Article by inserting pseudo-scientific and unsourced POV, such as the claim that Uzbek people are an "Iranian people" (Uzbeks are a Turkic people as one can see in the respective article). I inserted an "accuracy is disputed" tag into the section, but he removed the tag and added more POV. If he continues his bias, the article will lose its FA status.

  • Well, it looks like he has been making constructive edits over there. I don't really have the expertise to determine, though. It's been a week since the article has been updated by this editor. I'll keep it on my watchlist and see what happens - Alison 22:14, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

Thank You

Thank you for taking care of the Safalra User page so quickly. I was not sure how to go about it, since reporting the IP did not work. I know that editing someone else's user page is a big no-no, so I did not wish to do that, even if it was to remove that icky vandalism. If there is an easier way for me to report things like that (i.e. items that I'd prefer to not edit (user pages) or locked articles) please let me know!

Have a great day Alison! :) ArielGold (talk)

  • Well, you did the absolute right thing in reporting them and you chose the correct forum in which to report it. Well done and thanks :) You might want to check out Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace as it's perfectly appropriate for you to warn that user yourself for their blatant userpage vandalism. *Giggle*

I guess I did sort of take some time away from here, didn't I? I hadn't realized it was nearly two years, wow! (For the life of me, I cannot figure out how to continue my discussion with you under my original "Thank You" header.) As for the reporting template, where would I put that ({uw-upv3}) comment? Place it on the person's talk page? Sorry, I have never reported someone before, I mostly just do spelling/grammatical mistake edits! When I pasted that command, it was a warning, not a report to an Admin. (which is why I changed it to () so it would show up here.) Sorry for being a pain, I'd just like to know how to get it right :D ArielGold (talk)

Two years? Wow! :) And yes, place the template on the user's talk page and maybe date it, too. You should also use the 'subst' command, like so;
==July 2007==

{{subst:uw-upv3|User:Alison}} - ~~~~

... should produce something like this;

July 2007

Please stop. If you continue to vandalize Wikipedia, as you did to User:Alison, you will be blocked from editing. - Alison 08:28, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

... things have changed a bit since you were here last :) I keep my own page of tips and tricks like this so I can copy and paste what I need, and explanations are always to-hand. Regards reporting; if the editor in question keeps on going past your final warning (level 3 or 4), report them to Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism and an admin will evaluate your request and take the necessary action. The trick to reporting there is to use {{vandal}}, so that;

*{{vandal|Alison}} is being an idiot again. Please block her now! - ~~~~

... will produce something like this;

There's a guide to all this here.

BTW, you're so not being a pain, so do ask away! We need more vandalism fighters like you - Alison 08:28, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

Me again :)

Okay, I had one of those pages already on my watch list, but your /work page is helpful! Thanks! (I hesitate to "warn" people on their talk pages, especially those who are just IPs, because I don't want to instigate them any further, it is quieter to just revert their damage.)

How can I answer you in the original talk post I make, instead of adding another header to reply? (Just to keep your page clean)

Also, if someone vandalized a user's page (like original request you fixed for me) are non-admin users allowed to revert them? I know that editing someone's user page is not something anyone should do, so that's why I went to the Admin page.

I was a +sysop (Admin) on Microsoft Gaming Zone for years and years, but there was no script, it was all done from a special "tool window" that just let you push buttons, which is why this stuff confuses me, it is a lot of script stuff that I'm completely unfamiliar with.

Also, what is RfA? :) ArielGold (talk)

You should probably make your own /work page (copy mine!) and add the useful bits there. Then bookmark it. It's perfectly okay (indeed, beneficial) to warn wayward editors, especially IPs, otherwise they won't know what's wrong and other editors won't know they've been reverted in the past. And yes, simple vandalism can always be reverted by any editor. Wikipedia is a flat hierarchy and everyone from anon editors to Jimbo Wales has the same rules. Reverting userpage vandalism is especially appreciated by the victim.
You can answer individual messages by clicking the [edit] tab beside the message title and prefacing your comment with the indent ':' marker. Add more to increase indentation. I'm using just one right now. RFA - well ... request for adminship :) - Alison 10:25, 21 July 2007 (UTC)
Ha! I see how you do the answering thing :) Thanks! I did make my own work page, but none of your warning boxes work for me. What I ended up doing was copying and pasting them, editing them, but I don't have any way to make them shortcuts with the {} things, so I'd have to open the page to edit, and then paste the entire < div > code I have into any pages. If you have any ideas why yours don't work for me, or what I could do to make mine into shortcuts, I'd appreciate it :) ArielGold (talk) 10:34, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

3RR - Some Advice Please?

Hello, I wondered if I could pick your brain quickly. I requested the Aquila guide be semi-protected, and you rejected this (quite fairly - I'm not arguing at all ;) ). Trouble is, I'm really not sure what to do. A number of users, the most recent anon. IP not being the only one, are repeatedly adding links to all 13 episodes on Google Videos. These videos are not up there legally - they are copyright infringements, and so should not be linked. Appart from all else, Wikipedia is not a collection of links etc. So, what can be done? On an individual basis, you mention the 3RR rule, and reporting a user for it. Though I know what it is, I have no idea how to report someone for it - I wonder if you could point me in the right direction. Also, on a slightly similar note, if I were to revert his edits more than 3 times, bearing in mind that the edits introduce links against Wikipedia regulations, would I be breaking the 3RR rule? On a whole-programme basis, how many times would these links have to be added for the page to qualify for protection of some sort or another?

I'd really appreciate any info you can give - though not new to Wikipedia, I am fairly new to the topic of vandalism/edit wars/3RR etc. Thanks ;) TheIslander 19:51, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

    • Thanks—I don't think checkuser is worth it. The users list is problematic, as it only lists "users starting at x"; I don't think there's a way to search for "usernames containing x". Fvasconcellos (t·c) 20:27, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

Gahanna, Ohio blocking/protection

From a quick glance at Gahanna, Ohio, I wasn't sure if it was really vandalism or a true edit war so I protected. If you think it's just one person vandalizing, feel free to override me and unprotect it (or sprotect if it's a moving IP). —Wknight94 (talk) 01:42, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

  • Protection is just fine. I've been in discussion with the blocked editor and they realise now that what they were doing was disruptive. Not so much 'vandalism' (as someone described it), as intense revert-warring - Alison 20:39, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

Alison, I've added to the discussion at MediaWiki_talk:Bad_image_list#request. I edit conflicted you having already added this to the list while posting that reply. Aquila (TV series)

As mentioned earlier, I'd still really like some advice if not too much trouble. Aquila is still being plauged with these links - it has now led to some making personal attacks on the talk page against those removing them. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. • Ok - I've commented on the talk page over there. If the slow-running edit war continues or the links are re-added, I will take the necessary action. I believe there have genuine concerns over linking to copyrighted material (and it 'is) via Google Video - Alison 02:07, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
Thanks Alison - much appreciated ;) TheIslander 09:26, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
BTW - the BBC article does not permit use of the links. It's still copyrighted material and the report shows the agreement referring to very specific media only - Alison 09:28, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
Yep, I know - that's why I've been working hard to remove them and keep them removed. Thanks for pointing it out, though. At what point do you think the article would qualify for protection of some sort or another? TheIslander 09:36, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
Really soon! I've replied on the talk page again, stating my concerns. If this persists, though, the article will be protected. Copyvio is a serious business - Alison 09:39, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
OK, thanks a lot Alison - hopefully the input of an admin alone will clear things up a little. If it doesn't, I'll be re-nominating for protection. Thanks! TheIslander 09:45, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

wiki Shemale

The redirect from shemale to transwomen my be from good intentions but it is not what people want.

The article was redirected from searching for SHEMALE. The link shemale-listing.com is valid because most shemales are in the adult industry. The site is free and has refering affiliate links often mandatory by use agreement with the producers. There are no popups on my site and the producers are reviewed by me. All profit goes to support the expenses of the site. People who search for shemale are not interested in the medical issues of transgender disphoria. Shemales are not to be pushed aside and erased from history because of shame of adult film work or resentment from the transvestite or crossdresser clique due to their beauty.

There is no way be accurate and get around adult links when searching for shemale as opposed to a medical term like transgender. My site is the most tame and free version of what people are looking for when they search for shemale.

[As posted to your talk page]

  • "My" site? Unfortunately, that add conflict of interest to the picture. The term 'shemale' tends to pejorative in itself and is constantly coming up here on Wikipedia. Unfortunately, it's a commercial link, profits or no, and Wikipedia is not a collection of links. Nor is it a vehicle for touting your own website. Sorry. If you insist on re-adding it all the time, as you are, it'll end up on the blacklist and will be effectively banned from the entire range of wikis. I've no opinion one way or another on 'shemales' or the term itself, but your link, unfortunately, comes under the heading of spam. And it's not encyclopedic - Alison 05:30, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
  • You say "The term 'shemale' tends to pejorative in itself and is constantly coming up here on Wikipedia." Thats seems so judgemental for an impartial editor, I get enough of that from everyone else. I am not trying to fight you or wiki. It just seems that shemale has been hijacked by a segment of the trans community that hates the shemale sub segment. I am not greedy or a spammer. I figured it would have been 10 seconds before someone took it down. Gays are better than transgenders, transgenders are holier than shemales. After they put up all the medical links in the shemale catagory I figured why ban the real shemlae link. Yes, I now know you technical policies. I don't know if you will find real shemale content if you filter it so much. It comes up so much, as you say, because thats what people want. They dont want to be redirected to transwomen. Any shemale links are going to be highly adult or total pay sites unless you list some myspace pages or something. I am unsure if you are TS or TG but I read you have an education in endocrinology. If I can not edit my own link into a site then pehaps you can write a page that explains shemale or transsexual better than putting it with transgender with links and info.

Regards, Nadia

  • I'm not being judgemental there, I'm stating facts. Take a look. The Shemale article went through AfD and ended up being a merge-and-redirect to Transwoman, something I voted against, but community consensus prevails. I've no interest in the politics of the matter, to be honest, nor am I transgendered. However, all that aside, your link fails on a number of levels, as I've already pointed out. If you think the page is incorrect right now or biased in some way, maybe bring it up on Talk:Transwoman and see if it can be changed? Hi again :)

Good Morning Alison :) Hope your weekend is going well. I have what I hope is a quick question. I really like the warning boxes you did on your /work page, and the bottom area that is a welcome-helpful links section. I was wondering if you could easily tell me how I could make something like that, so it would have the shortcut string to use. (While I really like the formatting, the very first box is very difficult for me to read with the current color scheme, so I'd like to change it)

Thanks in advance, ArielGold 11:33, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi Alison,

My article for ineedhits was deleted under incorrect reasons, "ie. no sources to awards for ineedhits and its founders" which in related links there was proof provided. If it wasn't clear enough, I would like the opportunity to reinstate the article with the correct links.

Thank you,

Also take a look at the SMS.ac entry and in comparision, ineedhits' entry was harmless

Hey Alison, I have a little disagreement with an admin regarding deletion of an article I created, first he claimed it's not notable because I had no references, then I showed I had referenced from leading newspapers and print media. Gerry_Lynch

Quick question for you about Gerry_Lynch and the denied unban request.

(And yes, I totally realise I risk being blocked as a sock puppet for asking the question. I'm going to ask anyway, on the grounds that I'm not even on the same continent as him which makes it unlikely I'm a sockpuppet. You might also count me as a meatpuppet - I'm not that, either, despite having heard of the ban initially from a non-wikipedia source. I have no particular investment in his being unblocked, I simply have a question about the use of the process in this instance.)

The question is twofold: you said "Decline reason: Checkuser says you are, unfortunately & I've no reason to doubt it — Alison ☺ 04:09, 24 July 2007 (UTC)" Checkuser checks based on IP, and without access to the results myself I obviously can't make a case against it, but I would question how large the block he's coming from is, and the possibility of this being collateral damage stemming from the same ISP or workplace. As well, I don't see a RFCU on WP:RFCU, nor do I see a result on Wikipedia:Suspected_sock_puppets or in the archives for June or July of this year of his account being marked a sockpuppet. Shouldn't those be there?--JohnRIT 14:58, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

Alison, look at this user's history: it's clear this person is not a sockpuppet. Please reinstate him asap. --Martin Wisse 18:27, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

Having looked at this, I think a mistake has been made and unblockings are in order. I would do this myself, but won't, in deference to another admin. -- Arwel (talk) 18:58, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
Ok - I'm inclined to agree at this point, given some of the other stuff that's come up. I'm unblocking & will take responsibility for what ever fallout ensues - Alison 21:18, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
Alison, I think any ensuing fallout might help figure out what happened here, but, from watching at WP:AN/I and several talk pages, I think many will agree that you tried very hard to balance WP:AGF between User talk:Dmcdevit's block and User:Gerry Lynch's request for unblock. The absence of a case at RfCU obviously threw a wrench into everything, and hopefully Dmcdevit can help clear that up when he gets back. I know Gerry Lynch must be disappointed with the machinations of Wikipedia here, and I hope he succeeds in making sure things are sorted out. At the same time, I think any third party would recognize that you ultimately didn't abandon or ignore the complicated situation here, and ultimately worked to make sure it was resolved... Take care,   j    talk   22:53, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
Yes, but no, J. This isn't a personal issue with Alison as I've said both privately and publicly that I believe she acted in good faith. But the procedures that lead to this situation stink!!!
The absence of a case at RfCU didn't really throw a wrench into anything, as had I not kicked up a stink via my own blog, which was then picked up on Nicholas Whyte's blog, my request for unblocking would have been rejected and I would have been permanently banned from wikipedia. The internal grievance procedures do not work, particularly as like most other wikipedians, I have little experience of life beyond editing main namespace pages. The blocked user page with advice on what to do next is confusing in the extreme.
Additionally, let's say User:Dmcdevit was around and did present a case on RfCU, based on my sharing a workplace dynamic IP with a large number of other users. I see no evidence that anyone in the wikipedia Admin community would have argued in favour of reversing the block, regardless of the evidence to the contrary from my own edit history. I wonder how many other legitimate Wikipedia users have been blocked, permanently for the same reasons, never to return? Simply sharing an IP address once in a while with a WP:DICK is not grounds for banning.
Thirdly, the lack of a reference at RfCU shouldn't have thrown a spanner in anything. It should have ended the matter there and then. No evidence, even when presented by a trusted user, is still no evidence. At that point, the block should have been removed instantly, and had I then gone on to act like a troll or a sockpuppet, I'm sure that would have been noted by the community and appropriate actions taken.
Finally, and this is where people might perceive personal criticism, and I apologise for that, from my perspective it seemed no admin was prepared to undo the work of another admin. Alison was reluctant to undo what Dmcdevit had done. Arwel and others were not prepared, initially, to undo the work of Alison. Dmcdevit's non-evidenced, non-present, word as a trusted and respected admin counted for more than mine as a suspected sockpuppet. From the outside, that's where people get ideas about an admin cabal.
I have neither the time nor the patience to be an admin, but I'm glad other people do and I'm not trying to knock anyone down. But it seems like people are so wound up from the daily battles with trolls that they shoot first and ask questions later, and then cover for one another. Add to the fact that raising the issue on ANI got my IP instantly blocked for a 'self-confessed block avoidance' and you can easily see how people get paranoid. Then people who back me up get IP blocked as well. Sorry, but that's lynch law!
How do we stop things like this happening again? That's what interests me now. (message copied to your user page) Gerry Lynch 23:58, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
I think your bringing up the issue at WP:AN/I was an important step on the path to getting things fixed. That made sure the issue didn't fall out of sight, which, given the block of your account and your IP, could have been possible. You're right to ask How do we make sure this doesn't happen again?, but, unfortunately, that's not always an easy question to answer. I really think the absence of a valid case page at WP:RfCU made the issue considerably more difficult to address than it needed to be. The issues surrounding the the user you were incorrectly associated with, User:Runcorn, were a significant issue on Wikipedia several months ago. I think the unusual nature of that situation, and the resulting absence of a RfCU page, made it difficult for anyone independent of User:Dmcdevit to make a determination as to the validity of the accusation against your account.
There is an Ombuds Commission for when a user's privacy is violated, but I don't think that's really helpful here. I think it would help to get User:Dmcdevit's explanation of what occurred from his perspective, so that you can figure out what led up to your account being blocked (currently an open question). One thing, as I understand it, is that your IP is shared by many users at a large organization or company. Normally, the talk pages for those IPs will be marked appropriately on Wikipedia (see Template:SharedIP, for example). The absence of that shouldn't mean just anybody who uses an IP should be labeled and banned as a sockpuppet, but, again, combined with the absence of a WP:RfCU, it made it very difficult for other administrators to be able to evaluate the situation and given the circumstances, appropriately unblock you.
I just want to add that I think the extent to which you're using your concern constructively, to try to get to the bottom of the issue, is very admirable. Given how frustrating this situation must have been, your staying calm and keeping focussed was a key factor in helping make sure the issue was resolved. Let me try and see (and, please, anybody else feel free to jump in, as well) what processes might help you get to the bottom of this. (With apologies to Alison for holding her talk page hostage; I hope she won't mind if we keep the conversation here for readability.)   j    talk   00:36, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
I find your argument here quite topsy-turvy. It is clear from the lack of a reference in WP:RfCU that proper procedure was not followed in blocking Gerry Lynch. This shouldn't make it "more difficult for administrators to evaluate the situation", it should make it much easier for administrators to evaluate the situation. Procedure not followed, therefore the block is invalid, therefore unblock immediately and home in time for tea and cakes. Administrators shouldn't be some hallowed class that are able to bend the structure of Wikipedia around themselves like a supermassive black hole warping space and time. They have a responsibility to follow procedure, and if they fail to do so then other admins should correct the situation immediately without having to run after the admin that messed up in order to find some presumed rationale for their flouting of correct procedure. That is natural justice. What is so difficult about that? Do admins regard themselves as a privileged class, such that they prefer to perpetuate ill-formed decisions than to contradict on of their fellow administrators? Iainjcoleman
You said: Well, as the original unblock reviewing admin (silly me. You should see my inbox) - sorry about my contribution to that (and this one, really) but than you for putting in the time to review the ban in depth and reverse it. --JohnRIT 15:25, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

Scott 110

Hi there! We've not spoken before, but I was wondering if you would be willing to have a look at the debate on Talk:Student. It involves Scott 110 (talk · contribs), who you've come across in the Admin noticeboards? I believe you told him to be Civil, and he said something along the lines of 'No', albeit less politely. This was in early June, I think. Regardless, he's involved in an edit war, and has refused to listen to the arguments that another user - 'Yeanold' - has (rather facetiously, I admit) constructed. I believe Yeanold's arguments stand firm however, and I'd appreciate your help in bringing Scott back to the table. Thanks! (PS, please reply on my talk page, thankyou!) Gaimhreadhan's Block

Hey :) Gaimhreadhan (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) is requesting a review of his block (enacted by yourself), so before I handle it, I was wondering if you could give me some details over the nature of his contributions that lead you to block? Cheers, Anthøny 20:11, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

Just in case Alison doesn't see this, basically, User:Gaimhreadhan strongly believes that User:Brixton Busters is an old editor who used his M:Right To Vanish, User:One Night In Hackney, and refers to Brixton Busters as ONiH (or 303, part of ONiH's signature). Brixton refuses to respond to Gaimhreadhan, and this just fuels this. Several editors (User:Tyrenius, myself and Alison, have asked Gaimhreadhan to stop doing so.. referring to Brixton Busters as ONiH is a violation of good faith and WP:CIVIL. Both Alison and myself have talked to ONiH off-WP, who insists that he is not User:Brixton Busters and that he (ONIH) has no desire to edit WP full time any more There's a discussion slightly above the block notice on Gaimhreadhan's page with Alison's final warning prior to the block. Actually, now that I was typing this up, I see that User:Brixton Busters has recently complained to admin User:AKRadecki over his treament. You can see his statement here SirFozzie 20:28, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
SirFozzie, thanks for summing this up so eloquently. I've transferred your comments over & the unblock request has now been resolved. Thanks again! - Alison 21:21, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

I diden't even know that there was a limit on the reverts to a page or user. I diden't even know that there was a 3RR when I made reverts on the Gahanna, Ohio page, but now I know after reading on the Wikipedia:Three-revert rule page. I am so sorry for that mess-up I made, I apologize for that mistake and it will not happen that way again with me.---OHWiki 20:58, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

  • Oh, that's absolutely no problem at all! In the end, you did the right thing and reported the other editor who had been totally uncommunicative and was at something like 8R or worse. Happy editing :) - Alison 21:19, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

Image license question

I hope you can answer this for me. On RC patrol, I came across this edit with an edit summary, "editor contacted me via e-mail to rescind his free licenses and invoke copyright". I didn't think that was allowed, is it? Flyguy649 talk contribs 21:24, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

It's not, providing the original {{gfdl-self}} is valid, and it seems to be. They released it when they uploaded it - Alison 21:40, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
Ok, thanks I'll revert. I guess they can ask for image deletion, instead. Flyguy649 talk contribs 21:41, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

Minor issue

Allo.
Since gerry's been unblocked as not being a sock of runcorn, wouldn't it make sense to also remove the sockpuppet template from gerry's ip address here?
(I didn't want to do it myself juuust in case it looked bad) Bladestorm 22:26, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

  • Hi there. Yes, that makes sense :) Removed. Thanks for letting me know - Alison 22:30, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

Tedius Zananduranko

I was pretty sure I'd live to regret talking TD into editing his userpage down. He's started to put back bits of misogynistic crap, and I suppose he figures we won't notice if he does it slowly enough. It's worth keeping an eye on: I predict it will need to go back to MfD within two weeks. Acroterion (talk) 02:48, 26 July 2007 (UTC)

I've taken out the mysogynistic nonsense, for his own sake. WP:MFD beckons otherwise & waiting a day then re-adding it is being contemptuous. Thanks for the update - Alison 04:51, 26 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for that, take care, Regards --Domer48 20:40, 26 July 2007 (UTC)

This arbitration case is closed and the decision has been published at the above link. Miskin (talk · contribs) is cautioned to gain a consensus on article talk pages before making further edits if his first edits are reverted. Swatjester (talk · contribs · blocks · protections · deletions · page moves · rights · RfA) is advised to take into account the length of time between previous blocks when blocking users, and to treat all editors violating the three-revert rule fairly. Dear Alison, in hopes that a previously uninvolved admin can take a look at the devolving discussion at Talk:Battle of Washita River. I've been involved in attempting to come to some kind of consensus here for awhile, with not much luck, as conversation has now mainly devolved into editors Custerwest (talk · contribs) & HanzoHattori (talk · contribs) sniping and making personal attacks on each other. I came down badly sick on Monday just as an offer by Phaedriel (talk · contribs) for informal mediation was refused by default (refusal to participate by HH, doesn't seem CW's "agreement" to participate was very genuine either, as it was full of snipes at HH). I just came back into the world of the living to find that devolution has continued to devolve, now with Felix c (talk · contribs) looking up information outside Wikipedia about Custerwest... oh geez, I already knew all that stuff about CW myself weeks ago, but isn't putting it up on a talk page as Felix c did tantamount to personal attack?

I'm exploring another option to try to improve things that Phaedriel suggested, before moving on to RfCs, but meantime was in hopes that a previously uninvolved admin could take a look at the personal attack issue there.

Thanks, as always. --Yksin 21:34, 29 July 2007 (UTC)

Thank you! :)

Thank you for your beautiful words and warm wishes on my birthday, dear friend! I took a well-deserved one-day wikibreak and spent it with my family and my friends... and actually had a beer after months of forced abstinence! :) Of course, there's no way I'd forget about you, so I saved a great, tasty piece of chocolate cake just for you - but sorry, no beer left! Again, thank you so much for taking the time to wish me well, and have a wonderful day, dear Allie! Love, Phaedriel - 08:27, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Sweet Allie, I've had a wonderful gift all through this week, every time I saw your shiny name appear at my watchlist, and whenever I visited your talk page and saw for myself you're back with us... I can't say this too many times: I've missed you so much, girl :) xxx, Sharon

shemale afd

I came across article shemale which was afd'd recently. I saw your vote and thought i would discuss. Result of afd was merge and redirect, but article is redirected before merging, and no mention of shemale in transwoman article, yet. My point is shemale and transwoman are different as sex and gender. shemale: biology and transexual while transwoman:sociology and transgender. The word by itself is not derogatory, but calling someone is derogatory, it is just like calling a male as a female. like i call a man as woman. I feel it should be restored until merged or it should be keep. Lara_bran 09:39, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

I have seen shemale in porn movies. i swear :) Lara_bran 10:39, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Jat People article

Hi Alison. There's an ugly dispute going on at the Jat people page. Can you please look into it being an uninvolved party. There are facts being presented by both sides which could be verified. I am a new user so I wasn't sure where else to ask. (I have sided with one party on the talk page but I might have gone overboard). Thanks and regards. -- Amit 17:29, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Thank you

Thanks for doing this. I'd forgotten to make that change over there. :) I found out you did that edit when I discovered that someone vandalized my pages there. Acalamari 23:00, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

My RfA

Hi, Alison, and thanks for your participation in my RfA. I've withdrawn it, and will be writing up an "analysis" of it, which will soon be available at User:Giggy/RfA/Giggy when it's done. Please come around when you get the chance, and give me feedback on how I can improve. Thanks again, Giggy UCP 04:05, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
