Washington County Fire District 2

In case you may have lost track of it, Washington County Fire District 2 needs to be updated, as that entity no longer exists as of July 1. I have way too little interest in the subject to want to do it myself, but since you wrote the article, I assume you do. Cheers, SJ Morg (talk) 10:05, 6 July 2017 (UTC)

Do you know how to fix the sources.., as in title, publication, date etc. Can you help out over there by any chance?--Boxman88 (talk) 23:02, 10 July 2017 (UTC)

DAT Solutions in Beaverton

Hello again. I worked with you on improving the Planar Systems company page. I would like to work on the DAT Solutions page which is located at Dial-a-truck, a name they haven't used in 4 years. Would you be supportive of moving the page to DAT Solutions with a redirect from the old name? As that process begins, I'll work up a sandbox version of the page to suggest changes and improvements. This will largely take the form of 1) reducing the duplicate narrative, 2) placing better citations throughout the page, and 3) putting in place an infobox similar to the one for Planar and other local companies, 4) improving the category tags. I would greatly appreciate your thoughts on this before I begin on the process. Thank you! — RossO (talk) 22:28, 12 July 2017 (UTC)

I would actually recommend starting to re-work it now, specifically to get some third party sources to show notability. Right now, the page would likely be deleted if nominated, and moving it might attract attention of editors who might nominate it. Once there are some third-party citations, then I would say move it. Aboutmovies (talk) 01:16, 13 July 2017 (UTC)
I'm making some progress on my sandbox version of the page. Would you mind taking a look at it and seeing what you think? The Articles To Reference box is temporary for my notes. RossO (talk) 00:19, 21 July 2017 (UTC)
Without a full review, don't use BusinessWire, it is a PR thing. Instead, a bit more reputable is the PBJ, and a search shows a few more articles. If you have a Multnomah County library card, use their online databases for The Oregonian (goes back to 1987) and The Historical Oregonian that goes from 1987 all the way back to the first issue. You may find more articles on the company. And, if you don't have their library card, get one, as even Washington County residents are eligible (some sort of reciprocal thing). Aboutmovies (talk) 02:29, 21 July 2017 (UTC)
Thank you for the suggestions and guidance. I've made much more progress on my sandbox version of the page. Would you mind taking a second look at it at some point in time? (No rush.) I've placed more articles to pull up and reference on the talk page. RossO (talk) 07:32, 30 July 2017 (UTC)
Quick look notes:
  1. Lede is a bit technical, though not sure if you can dumb it down to what an average reader would understand
  2. History section is usually first
  3. Products would not be capitalized in the header; also you have an external link in that section, which is not allowed per WP:ELNO
  4. Footnote 17 in the last section has an error since you can see part of the coding
  5. Trim the EL section, probably just leave the thesis and the DAT links
Otherwise the sourcing looks a lot better. High start or low C class, and likely to survive any deletion attempts. Aboutmovies (talk) 00:42, 2 August 2017 (UTC)
These are great notes, and I'm grateful to you for the help. I have dealt with each of the five items you noted, including adding a bit more background to the lede graph. Unless you have a different idea, I will update the original page with my version. Once that page has been settled for a week or so, I will push to have it moved to a more appropriate page. — RossO : talk 20:35, 4 August 2017 (UTC)

@Aboutmovies: I have updated the page with my final draft, moved it to the new name and have placed an RfC request on the talk page for general feedback. => DAT Solutions <= I welcome your comments there again. I'm hoping to have the 'stub' classifications removed. — RossO (talk) 18:17, 10 August 2017 (UTC)

Information icon Hello. This is a message to let you know that one or more of your recent contributions, such as the edit you made to Ray Rigby (screenwriter), did not appear constructive and has been reverted. Please take some time to familiarise yourself with our policies and guidelines. You can find information about these at our welcome page which also provides further information about contributing constructively to this encyclopedia. If you only meant to make test edits, please use the sandbox for that. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you may leave a message on my talk page. Thank you. You added the category "Place of birth missing" to an article which quite clearly did state the persons place of birth. I am getting rather unhappy with this stupid drive-by tagging, adding categories which clearly do not apply to new articles. PatGallacher (talk) 00:06, 5 August 2017 (UTC)

I don't need to familiarize myself with anything, it was a simple mistake based on the fact that the formatting in the lede is not standard. Sort of like your message here not being a separate section was a simple mistake. Perhaps you should familiarize yourself with WP:AGF. Aboutmovies (talk) 01:44, 5 August 2017 (UTC)

Overlinking

Hi, please note this. You might wish to consult WP:MOSLINK. Thanks for your contributions. Tony (talk) 05:13, 12 August 2017 (UTC)

Hi Tony1 (talk · contribs) you might want to consult WP:DTTR, especially since I added a total of ZERO links to that article. Check the history carefully, as my only edit was to move it to a more specific category per WP:CAT (other than an assessment). Aboutmovies (talk) 21:41, 12 August 2017 (UTC)
Ach, sorry, wrong person. But I included no template above, and if you'd added the useless links I'd have posted the same here. Tony (talk) 23:04, 12 August 2017 (UTC)

Resetting my expectations and understanding processes

@Aboutmovies: I've been woking on an update to Portal:Current events in an effort to make it mobile-friendly. With the help of a couple of WP'ers I've put together a comprehensive set of changes that will enable the page to work at all window widths quite well:

Portal talk:Current events#Mobile-Friendly Current Events project (Final_step)

I posted this over 48 hours ago, but have not had a single comment about the change. These pages are watched very closely and I'm wondering if I've done something wrong or if no comment is a good comment. I wasn't expecting the change to be implement immediately, but I was expecting to have some comments made, particularly as I am suggesting using a flexbox inline style that I haven't seen used on WP before. Have I gone about this incorrectly? Have I missed a step in the process? Do I simply not have any clout with the Editors to be noticed? I'm curious as to what you think the situation is, as I have no way of gauging the sentiment. — RossO (talk) 19:52, 13 August 2017 (UTC)

The issue is more that Wikipedia is simply not as active as it used to be. Things happen more slowly, so just give it some more time. Aboutmovies (talk) 21:50, 13 August 2017 (UTC)
Thanks. I will hold tight and just put this aside for while. — RossO (talk) 07:24, 14 August 2017 (UTC)

I am an Oregon pilot and marine operator with a question for you

Greetings-

I have lived in Oregon all my life. I am 46. Grew up in Gresham, outside of Portland. Went to school at Wheaton College in Chicago, IL and married my dream girl from Indian via Wheaton College. We have lived happily in Sisters, Oregon (near Bend) for the last 24 years. We have a fabulous 17 year old daughter (student body president of her school) and a wonderful 14 year old son (who loves basketball).

I own three of my own companies in Sisters. I have been friends with a best selling author (who lives in Charleston ,SC) for the last 24 years. His wikipedia page has been vandalized and "stocked/guarded" by one editor in particular for the last 7 years. This editor made over 45 edits himself on my friends book wiki page 7 years ago and has removed tons of properly sourced true facts by tons of editors ever since.

I was wondering if I flew my plane over to Twin Oaks, Newberg, Troutdale, or Aurora airport to buy you lunch, if I could better understand how the wikipedia rules can be followed to stop this editor from promoting his slant writing and criticism which leaves my friend's book's wiki page over 85% negative and very damaging to his brand. As you can see, I avoided landing in PDX because I fly a small single engine Cessna 170B (I drove to NJ 2 years ago to get this plane, put it on a trailer, drove it to Sisters, put 800 hours into it restoring it, and today she is better than new). Happy to take you for a flight if you like flying in small planes. Thanks for your consideration and congratulations on such a successful career as a wiki volunteer editor. 208.100.129.61 (talk) 07:19, 19 August 2017 (UTC)

Hey there! Firstly, thank you for being a longtime part of Wikipedia, especially for topics about our region. Second, I posted a note in the Norma Paulus Talk page regarding past edits I've made as a newbie user, which I hope that you will review and respond with your best advice as a veteran.

Note: I'll be logging in regularly in the next few weeks as a part of a training program run by OCLC and Webjunction, Wikipedia + Libraries. My goals include building my skills to be confident to engage others in supporting and using Wikipedia.

Thanks for any comments you have, and I look forward to getting up to speed on how to navigate the rich world of this place. Best wishes, Lgrayp (talk) 16:28, 13 September 2017 (UTC)

Update: Sorry to get things out of order -- now I have my profile and Talk pages up, so if you have any comments, you have a place for them to go. Thanks again. Lgrayp (talk) 15:27, 20 September 2017 (UTC)

Wasn't sure to consider him living or not. I guess better safe to put that he is so it falls under BLP. Tried to find a date of birth, but only found an age (43 in 1984), so I think the rule is we keep them in living people until something like 100, unless we know they are dead. Aboutmovies (talk) 22:14, 20 November 2017 (UTC)

List of films shot in Oregon

I would like to add Bandits to the list of films shot in Oregon (2001). The thing that stopped me was the apparent regional separation of filming. This film was shot at multiple Oregon (and California) locations. I don't know if it should appear repeatedly as some scenes were quite short. Is IMDB sufficient as a credible source? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0219965/locations?ref_=tt_dt_dt This is a fun movie and if you have not seen it I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Bandits_(2001_film) Especially where Bruce Willis and Billy Bob Thornton escape prison in a Ross Island Concrete mixer truck. MisterHOP (talk) 22:45, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

I saw it in the theater, it was OK. Anyway, I think you just pick a location and go with that. For example, Management (film) filmed in Madras, and the Portland area, but is listed only in Portland. Aboutmovies (talk) 23:40, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

Request for suggestions

Hi Aboutmovies! You recently assessed the article Blueford v. Arkansas; per the WikiProject FAQs, I would very greatly appreciate it if you could give feedback on any suggested improvements to the article you might have. Thanks! Kevin (aka L235 · t · c) 04:21, 13 February 2018 (UTC)

Kevin, that is a nice article. My concern as to getting to B class is a bit too much reliance on primary sources. I know we do it all the time in law articles, as people with a legal background prefer primary sources. But, as the link to primary sources notes, they are to be used with care, which to me means sparingly because we end up interpreting too much of what we think the court said. We may have the legal background to competently do so, but that is not within Wikipedia rules. The rest give it a good copyedit, as for example citation 18 lacks the name of the source. What do you think to bring back COTW?

Hi Aboutmovies,

Peteforsyth mentioned to me that you were the person who initiated the collaboration of the week (though COTW is no longer active sadly..). I am thinking to create a tool to help recommend one or two articles to WikiProjects to reduce the effort of coordinating the article selection process. I wonder what do you think about it? Would other WikiProjects appreciate this idea as well? Thank you! Bobo.03 (talk) 15:40, 24 February 2018 (UTC)

I don't know if other projects would or not, or if there are that many active projects left. While the tool could be a time saver, I just don't know how effective the COTW would be at this time. If you are familiar with the editing of Wikipedia in general, the entire project has stagnated and simply does not have as many editors engaged as it did say a decade ago. More than anything, have lots of engaged editors is what made it successful. I just was able to provide a leadership role in focusing that energy. In other words, it would not hurt to try your tool. Aboutmovies (talk) 23:53, 24 February 2018 (UTC)
Hi Aboutmovies, sorry I just see your message - did not watch your page. I see.. Yeh, I've tried to build tools to help projects recruit new members. What would it need to get to B or A? --GRuban (talk) 22:51, 3 March 2018 (UTC)

A has to go through a formal process. As to B, you are almost there. A few more details and a good copyedit. For example, what did he graduate with, where was the clerkship (as in which court)? I assume a JD for the degree, but it does not say and there are other degrees (by that time most law schools did JDs though). Then, cases should be in italics, as are Latin words (pro bono). Requesting to use your image

Hi there,

I am a member of the Kruse Way Rotary club. I have been tasked with updating our website, and I would like permission to use your photo found at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Trees_in_bloom_off_Kruse_Way_-_Lake_Oswego,_Oregon.JPG

I am not a webmaster or developer by trade and this is my first interaction on Wikipedia. I see that there are correct ways to attribute this work to you, but I don't quite understand how it works. The photo when cropped to 1200x300 pixels makes a nice background image for the header on the webpage. I am able to resize the image and upload it into the website template editor, and I don't see any way to directly edit the HTML or list an attribution. Would you be willing to give me permission to use the photo without correct attribution?

Thanks for your consideration.

Kjpalmer21 (talk) 03:36, 8 March 2018 (UTC)

Normally I would, but I have a hang up with this photo. What you can do is add the attribution elsewhere on the page (say the bottom). Something like: "Photo courtesy of M.O. Stevens"

She died in Longview, Washington. There are numerous article, here is one example[1], that say she died in hospice care. There is a hospice care[2] in Longview. The criteria[3] for Notable people sections say a person must have either lived or been born somewhere to be from a place. Dying somewhere or being buried somewhere doesn't meet those criteria. Find a reference for Fraley that says she is from Longview....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 10:42, 18 April 2018 (UTC)

I am well aware of the rules on this, I just assumed everyone knew she lived there at the end of her life. The news around here when she died, which Longview is part of the metro area I'm in, was that she was from there. I have now added a source. Aboutmovies (talk) 06:29, 19 April 2018 (UTC)

Suggestion for categorization edit summary

Hi Aboutmovies, thanks for your comment at Talk:James Hartness#Categorization of people?. You mentioned that other editors have shared my misunderstanding of the categorization process. I thought that using an edit summary in such cases might help them understand the policy better, as follows: "Placing individual in the deepest pertinent subcategories per WP:COP." That would point the puzzled editor on the other end to the correct guidance. Cheers, HopsonRoad (talk) 13:22, 19 May 2018 (UTC)

Feedback request

Hi Aboutmovies,

You reviewed a page I created, Robin Tewes. An editor put a "tone" tag on the page since then. I have made some edits to address what may have caused that and hoped that you could take a look to see if you thought the tag is warranted. This is mostly for future reference, for any future writing I might do. If it's too much to ask, I understand. Best, --Mianvar1 (talk) 19:16, 11 July 2018 (UTC)

I only read the first paragraph and would agree with the tone tag. Take a look at the opening paragraph to Vincent van Gogh, which is a featured article class (AKA the best of the best). While clearly not comparable in their stature, notice how Ms. Tewes' artwork seems to get more ink if you will. Van Gogh's article covers some key details in a matter of fact way. Tewes goes to great lengths about style in very detailed ways, ways that are I think too subjective at least for the lead. Some of that is appropriate later, but needs to really be more directly attributed to individuals. As in, Bob the art critic has described her work as personal. Otherwise, the tone as it is, is what I would expect to find in a brochure at one of her showings, and this is an encyclopedia. You have a lot of good sources, it is just in need of some tweaking. Aboutmovies (talk) 07:01, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for the constructive feedback. When I get a chance, I'll take a look at the Van Gogh page and then look at where I can make edits and incorporate your other feedback. --Mianvar1 (talk) 15:34, 16 July 2018 (UTC)

You rated this article a stub. He lived less than four years. Parents baptism godparents death burial legacy. Bmclaughlin9 (talk) 12:01, 16 October 2018 (UTC)

It was rated a stub over a decade ago. Usually it is poor form to remove the rating, as we have an assessment program WP:BIOG/A. More to the point, even if an article is as complete as you can get it, does not mean it is not a stub. My first article will likely never rise above a start, despite it being the most complete biography I have ever found, as it simply is not a complete telling of the story of the subject. Information has been lost to time, likely forever, but that does not mean the article should then be say a GA. Aboutmovies (talk) 03:19, 17 October 2018 (UTC)

Movie Plot removed by Cyphoidbomb

Cyphoidbomb 02:42, 21 November 2018 (UTC) - You have asked me where did the plot summary come from ? Well, I narrated the same out of memory after having watched this movie multiple times. It would never amount to a copyright violation or "Derivative Works" as highlighted. It's mentioned "It's unusual for a giant plot to be dropped into an article without any history of its evolution". Yes, it could seem unusual because this was done at one go in about 6 hours after consolidating the summary from memory for reasons mentioned above. I wish to know why you cannot request the contributor to make the changes instead of getting the contents down ? "Where the contents originated?". It originated in my memory by the virtue of watching the movie multiple times and not from any other source on the INTERNET (if that is an assumption and I would be well aware that it would be a copyright violation). What changes need to be done to revert the changes back on the page ? I would definitely not appreciate the entire contribution being taken down. Rajesh Chittor 04:01, 21 November 2018 (UTC)

First, I really wish people would learn to read. You know, the ALL CAPS PART at the top of the page.
Secondly, WTF? Seriously, WTF? I do like to think of myself as a god and all, but I am not all-knowing so I have no idea what you are talking about. This is why we have links. Maybe a title of the article you are talking about, and more importantly why this involves me. Otherwise, best I can tell is I welcomed you back in 2010, as in 8 freaking years ago and now you have some question about some edit I had nothing to do with? Seriously? Ask the person involved. Oregon Mandolin Orchestra page

Hi Aboutmovies,

I see that you created the page about the Oregon Mandolin Orchestra -- bravo.

I recently tried to edit the page, revising it with more current information. But my efforts were off the mark. I am affiliated with the orchestra, so I have a conflict of interest. I used language that sounded too biased/promotional and my footnotes weren't up to snuff.

So, I am hoping that someone will update the orchestra's page. My edits remain in the page history. Would you be willing to take a look and see if any of that information is Wiki-worthy? And if so, would you be interested in taking it on?

For example, the OMO's music director has been Christian McKee -- not Brian Oberlin -- since April 2017. The orchestra has been based in Portland -- not Hillsboro -- since 2016. Most of the concerts are not in Hillsboro, either.

I realize that I did this the wrong way. But can you help make it right?

If not, do you have any other ideas?

Thanks,

Assessment of Oregon article

Just uploaded couple of new articles. Brooks-Scanlon Lumber Company article was quickly assessed as START. When I asked for comments on how to improve the article, assessor raised rating to but didn’t offer any improvement suggestions. Would you look at the article and confirm Oregon assessment? Company has been out of business for 25 years and I went through decades of old newspapers to put together the article which I though was pretty good. Would like your opinion as unofficial Wiki-Oregon reviewer. Also, would you review related Brooks Resources if you have time.--Orygun (talk) 03:11, 30 June 2019 (UTC)

I just copy edited a few paragraphs to show what needs to be done in that respect. Also, to make it to B, you need more on the company's other operations. You note it started in MN, but there is little else there. Aboutmovies (talk) 08:49, 1 July 2019 (UTC)
  • FYI, have added 8 new paragraphs covering Brooks-Scanlon operations in Minnesota, Florida, and British Columbia. Wasn't even aware that the company had operations in Florida so really appreciate pointing me toward other operating areas. Thanks again!--Orygun (talk) 02:46, 18 July 2019 (UTC)

Please don't feel any pressure to reply, or feel free to suggest another venue where I might get some help. Thanks!

Extended content

The case of GirlsDoPorn involved a lawsuit which awarded $12.75 million to women in damages, and I'm wondering how the article should discuss information from the lawsuit. Initially I've gone with use of "alleged", "reported" or "according to X" wherever a potentially legally damaging claim is made, to make sure I'm complying with WP:BLP. However, I'd like to be using the minimal amount of qualifiers that is appropriate, because I think such qualifiers can undermine the fact of the situation and the realities of what the women involved experienced. What can we say on Wikipedia of claims made by plaintiffs in a case that was found in favour of them?

I'm also looking for help with the "Legal action" section because I'm not too familiar with the American legal system and I want everything to be correct. I don't know if there are legal sources rather than mainstream media sources that we could use here. Also, any cleanup and copyediting or any other improvements would be welcome.

Hi Aboutmovies! Just thought I'd reach out to see if you wanted to nominate Hall/Nimbus station for GA. Just did some minor clean up and updates. I think it'll pass pretty easily. --truflip99 (talk) 02:01, 25 April 2020 (UTC)

However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

A tag has been placed on File:BendBroadband logo.png requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused duplicate or lower-quality copy of another file on Wikipedia having the same file format, and all inward links have been updated.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Harold R Burton House National Register of Historic Places

Thank you for adding my house to the Wikipedia listing for buildings on the National Register. Two changes — it is not a mansion. Secondly, my name is spelled Kim Hancey Duffy. I am the author of the listing as well as the owner of the house. Also, it’s interesting that you picked out the one feature to mention, that the copper roof failed. There are many other interesting facts to pick out of the narrative. Again, thank you for adding it to the listings. Kimhancey (talk) 14:26, 15 August 2020 (UTC)

Notice

The article Charles A. Becker has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No evidence of notability

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Bearian (talk) 18:12, 18 December 2020 (UTC)
