A note on speaking in Wikipedia's voice[edit]

Hi A.M. Tatarian! I left a note at Talk:Chronic diarrhea of infancy, but wanted to add something small to your to-do list here. Both the sentence that you fixed the reference to and the one you expanded and clarified do something that we try to avoid when we write Wikipedia articles: making recommendations in Wikipedia's voice. Many of the reviews you read on chronic diarrhea are written with the intention of guiding physicians' decisions. The authors' authority as professionals is used to power their recommendations. Here, we're writing an encyclopedia with the intention of informing regular folks about each topic. Wikipedia articles are written by a group with no particular claim to authority. So instead of writing "Diarrhea should be treated with X" (making a recommendation in Wikipedia's voice), we try to be more specific in describing the recommendation, e.g. "The American Association of Gastroenterologists recommends treating Y with X". This is codified here at WP:What Wikipedia is not and for medical articles in particular here. For both of the sentences in question here, the problem was there long before you arrived. I just wanted to call it to your attention as yet another thing to consider improving at the article. That said, it's great to see more editors interested in medicine (greater still to see editors interested in diarrhea!). I hope you decide to stick around. All the best, Ajpolino (talk) 22:17, 29 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
