G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

• tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
• updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
• creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. 2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting

"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive

G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.

Artillery

If you're interested, I've started putting together a page on the early artillery organization of the Army. The "result," so far is in a sandbox: User:Gaarmyvet/sandbox 3. Comments would be appreciated. Among the challenges are naming conventions; the 1st Regiment of Artillery is completely unrelated to the 1st Field Artillery Regiment and so on. "Convoluted" is probably a good description for Army lineage. I published Early U.S. Artillery formations and added a line to Template:Artillery Regiments (United States) to account for the 19th century regiments. I started working on the 1st Artillery Regiment (1821) (see my sandbox 3, above, if you wish) when I realized that the 1st ADA traces its lineage to the old 1st Artillery. Now I'm thinking of just linking to the 1st ADA. "We" will have to add some stuff there, like the 1st being commanded by Robert Anderson at Fort Sumter (only two companies present) on that fateful day in April of 1861. User:RobDuch has been working on the 1st ADA and I'm going to duplicate this note on his talk page. I haven't even looked at the 2nd through 5th Regiments yet. Yes. Broadly (and with exceptions) the single artillery branch had coast regiments and field regiments from the late 1900s- because we had more coast than field earlier, most of the old units were coast. In WW2, when we didn't really need coast artillery any more, many of those units were converted into air defense artillery. At the same time, all the regiments were broken up into separate battalions. In 1957 with the Combat Arms Regimental System and the pentomic organization, we crammed the regiments back together and combined air defense and field into single regiments. In 1968, we tried to break them apart when ADA was made a separate branch. At this point, I think we should bin the CARS/ARS, and put the regiments back together into single battalion-sized units. The 1st Field Artillery Battalion would carry the lineage of all the appropriate old batteries, with no Xth Battalion, Yth FA Regiment.82redleg (talk) 13:14, 12 May 2018 (UTC)

I know this is from a long time ago, but you seem to have created the page (in January 2014) with content (see [1]) almost exclusively copied verbatim from the cited source ([2] Earwig all but confirms this).

That is, of course, not how you add new information to Wikipedia.

List of armored and cavalry regiments of the United States Army

Hey 82redleg, may the "All Americans" divisional artillery never fade!! Just wanted to advise you about this armd/cavalry regiments article. I wanted to set up a list where anyone who found a reference to any battalion/squadron at *any* time period could go and look it up. Thus whether active, inactive, or whatever status, if we have sourced data, it should be in there. It was *not* supposed to be a current listing of battalions - we have lots of other recentist articles which do that kind of thing.
