Managing a conflict of interest[edit]

Information icon Hello, 192.216.120.25. We welcome your contributions to Wikipedia, but if you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about in the article Seth Grove ‎, you may have a conflict of interest or close connection to the subject.

All editors are required to comply with Wikipedia's neutral point of view content policy. People who are very close to a subject often have a distorted view of it, which may cause them to inadvertently edit in ways that make the article either too flattering or too disparaging. People with a close connection to a subject are not absolutely prohibited from editing about that subject, but they need to be especially careful about ensuring their edits are verified by reliable sources and writing with as little bias as possible.

If you are very close to a subject, here are some ways you can reduce the risk of problems:

  • Avoid or exercise great caution when editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with.
  • Be cautious about deletion discussions. Everyone is welcome to provide information about independent sources in deletion discussions, but avoid advocating for deletion of articles about your competitors.
  • Avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).
  • Exercise great caution so that you do not accidentally breach Wikipedia's content policies.

Please familiarize yourself with relevant content policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you. 220 of Borg 23:26, 14 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

exclamation mark  The edits concerned are here.
Whoever is editing from this IP needs to consider how their edits will be regarded if, or when, the mass media examines them. Everything you edit here is recorded against the IP address, and is directly traceable to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, (Republican). In other words you need to be extremely careful and if a COI exists, such as making 'promotional' edits or seeming to 'white-wash' a politicians biography, then you should not make that edit. Such editing reflects very poorly upon the person whose BLP is edited, even if done in good faith and even if they are unaware of it! Removing material that the person 'doesn't like' will possibly have exactly the opposite effect that is wanted as it will be brought to peoples attention even more than if it had been left on their page. (See Streisand effect) You will be found out, eventually.
Just friendly advice! --220 of Borg 23:49, 14 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

September 2015[edit]

Information icon Hello, 192.216.120.25. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with some of the people, places or things you have written about in the article Daryl Metcalfe, you may have a conflict of interest. People with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, see the conflict of interest guideline and frequently asked questions for organizations. In particular, please:

  • avoid editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, its competitors, or projects and products you or they are involved with;
  • instead, propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • exercise great caution so that you do not violate Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use require disclosure of your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation.

Please familiarize yourself with relevant policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, sourcing, and autobiographies. Thank you. Gamaliel (talk) 15:13, 25 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

WP:COI[edit]

This is a standard message to notify contributors about an administrative ruling in effect. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date.

You have shown interest in articles about living or recently deceased people, and edits relating to the subject (living or recently deceased) of such biographical articles. Due to past disruption in this topic area, a more stringent set of rules called discretionary sanctions is in effect. Any administrator may impose sanctions on editors who do not strictly follow Wikipedia's policies, or the page-specific restrictions, when making edits related to the topic.

For additional information, please see the guidance on discretionary sanctions and the Arbitration Committee's decision here. If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor.

Read WP:COI and abide by it. It's clear there is an inherent COI based on your IP address and the fact that the creator was hired to create the article. Stop editing it directly. CUPIDICAE💕 14:51, 22 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Reach out to OTRS[edit]

You can reach out to WP:OTRS to try and have your identity verified, because right now we can't verify you're who you say you are. I understand that dealing with the byzantine and labyrinthine structures of Wikipedia can be irksome, but rest assured it developed this way over decades of applying duct tape over and over to hold pieces of it together. You may also want to make an account so it's easier for people to realize you are you, since the IP address you're posting from can change. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 15:40, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

ScottishFinnishRadish This is not correct advice. Verifying identity as a user or as an IP will not change what I told them on the talk page, which is that we do not rely on information relayed through Wikipedia but what reliable sources say and we certainly don't allow subjects to dictate the content of the article. CUPIDICAE💕 15:52, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with that, but it would be good to know that we're actually talking with the person. It would also be nice to explain a bit better to someone who probably knows thing about the swirling vortex that is the machinery of Wikipedia what exactly has to be done to get the article into decent shape with the encyclopedia's best interests at its core. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 16:01, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It's irrelevant, we're not going to verify the identity of an IP. CUPIDICAE💕 16:02, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That would be why I said they should make an account. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 16:14, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
