How to summarize and paraphrase[edit]

You already know how to WP:CITE a reliable source, but you need to learn to summarize and paraphrase. Copying and pasting material from a book is usually regarded as plagiarism, or stealing the writing. Summarizing involves shortening the source text to its main points. Paraphrasing involves using different words that have the same meaning. For example, the first paragraph of Cat could be summarized and paraphrased like "Cats are carnivore mammals, often kept as pets, that are known for hunting vermin." Read WP:CLOSEPARAPHRASE also. Just a few word changes won't be enough. And what you added about the Sphinx wouldn't belong in the article in any case. Dougweller (talk) 16:57, 24 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
