Hi, just to explain, it's not sufficient to consult a dictionary and to choose a meaning that appears there: the overall translation has to make sense. Many words in languages including Swedish have multiple meanings, depending on the context. We need to base what we do on knowledge not just of the words but of Tolkien's Middle-earth, and we need to rely not on our own ideas but on what scholars have written. Translation of The Lord of the Rings into Swedish[edit]

Well, I find it curious that you should suppose that the One Ring was there to "aid" the other Rings of Power. That is obviously wrong; and the fact that "aid" is a valid meaning of the word in question just shows that using a word-list is not a sufficient approach. I've no idea what a "literal" translation is really, and nor I think does anybody else (it certainly doesn't mean letter-by-letter translation, which is impossible). The only thing we can rely on is the work of scholars (or of Tolkien himself), so we'll have to remove the uncited materials. Chiswick Chap (talk) 12:18, 10 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The idea on this page seems to be to translate word-for-word, or as close as possible. Which wrecks idioms, and is open to interpretation. E.g. "bytte", could be "switched", as proposed in the original translation, but in the context of "smör"/"butter" probably refers to a tray or a trough of butter. 109.228.176.49 (talk) 12:35, 10 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
