Dream Journey (Japanese: ドリームジャーニー, foaled 24 February 2004) is a Japanese Thoroughbred racehorse and sire.

As a juvenile in 2006 he won three of his four races including the Grade 1 Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes and received the JRA Award for Best Two-Year-Old Colt. In the following season he contested all three legs of the Japanese Triple Crown but recorded his only success of the year in the Kobe Shimbun Hai. As a four-year-old he won the Kokura Kinen and the Asahi Challenge Cup. He reached his peak in 2009 when he won the Osaka Hai, Takarazuka Kinen and Arima Kinen and was voted Best Older Male Horse in Japan. He remained in training until 2011 but failed to win in his last two seasons.

After his racing career ended, Dream Journey was retired to become a breeding stallion but has had little success as a sire of winners.

Background[edit]

Dream Journey is a dark bay horse with a small white star and bred in Japan by the Shadai Corporation. During his racing career he was trained by Yasutoshi Ikee and raced in the black, yellow and red colours of the Shadai affiliate Sunday Racing.

He was from the second crop of foals sired by Stay Gold a horse whose wins included the Dubai Sheema Classic and Hong Kong Vase in 2001. He went on to sire many major winners including Orfevre, Gold Ship, Nakayama Festa, Rainbow Line and Fenomeno.[2]

Dream Journey's dam Oriental Art won three minor races in three seasons on the track between 2002 and 2004,[3] and went on to produce DReam Journey's full-brother Orfevre.[4] She was a descendant of the Kentucky-bred broodmare Erin (foaled 1927), making her a distant relative of many major winners including Ruffian, Fusaichi Pegasus and Pine Bluff.[5]

Racing career[edit]

2006: two-year-old season[edit]

Dream Journey began his track career in a contest for previously unraced juveniles over 1400 metres on firm ground at Niigata Racecourse on 3 September 2006 and won narrowly from the filly Descoberta. Twenty-seven days later he followed up by beating the filly Rose Otto in the Fuyo Stakes over 1600 metres at Nakayama Racecourse. The colt was then stepped up in class and to contest the Grade 3 Tokyo Sports Hai Nisai Stakes over 1800 metres at Tokyo Racecourse on 18 November and sustained his first defeat as he ran a close third behind Fusaichi Ho O and Flying Apple.[6] For his final start of the season Dream Journey was moved up in class again to contest Japan's premier race for two-year-olds, the Grade 1 Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes over 1600 metres at Nakayama on 10 December and started the 5.7/1 second choice in the betting behind the Daily Hai Nisai Stakes winner Osumi Daido. Ridden by Masayoshi Ebina, he won by half a length from Laurel Guerreiro, with Osumi Daido and Flying Apple close behind in third and fourth.[7]

Dream Journey was named Best Two-Year-Old Colt in the JRA Awards for 2006. In the official rankings of Japanese racehorses for 2006, Dream Journey was rated the joint-best two-year-old of the year, level with Fusaichi Ho O.[8]
