Engaging with learners in any setting requires knowledge of how human beings learn at a different stages of their development. In the case of children and adolescents this is clearly related to physical and cognitive growth and development. Research into learning over the last 100 years has largely focused on a psychological approach, drawng on the work of Piaget, Bruner, Vygotsky and others. More recently, the work of Roger Sperry in the1950s has given rapid rise to knowledge and insight into how the body and brain interact with the environment and stimulate action, learning memory and knowledge.
