From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

U.S. Marine Gunnery Sergeant Elmo “Pop” Haney was a WWI veteran who continued to fight in the Pacific theater in WWII. He is mentioned as a noteworthy non-commissioned officer of extreme discipline in With the Old Breed at Peleliu and Okinawa by E. B. Sledge, and other Pacific War memoirs. He was in combat at Guadalcanal and Cape Gloucester (New Guinea). He was awarded the Silver Star for valor.

[Editors: Please help with this article. There is at least one known photo of Gunnery SGT Haney online. He is known to have an obituary in Arkansas, if someone could please find it and post the entire short contents. There are also excellent first-hand eyewitness references to him in Hell in the Pacific by Jim McEnery. Thanks to all.]
