Cinq rechants for 12 mixed voices a cappella is a work by Olivier Messiaen composed in 1948 to his own text.
The premiere was given 15 at Paris in the Sorbonne's amphithéâtre Richelieu by the Ensemble vocal Marcel Couraud conducted by Marcel Couraud. The work calls for 3 each of sopranos, contraltos, tenors and basses, and lasts approximately 18 to 21 minutes.

Analyse[edit]
Cinq rechants is the last work of the 'Tristan Trilogy', following Harawi and the Turangalîla-Symphonie. The title alludes to Claude Le Jeune's Printemps (« chef-d'œuvre d'écriture chorale et chef-d'œuvre de rythme » selon Messiaen) in which couplets alternate with refrains or rechants.
La mélodie prend sa source dans le harawi (yaravi), love songs of Peruvian or Andean folk music, and the mediaeval aubade. Messiaen was inspired by the alba of the troubadours Jaufré Rudel et Folquet de Marseille as well as the characters Brangäne in Wagner'sTristan und Isolde and Mélisande in Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande.
Les rythmes de ces Cinq Rechants sont empruntés pour partie aux Decî-Tâlas, rythmes provinciaux de l'Inde. Le premier couplet du premier rechant « Hayo kapritama la li la li la li la ssaréno » superpose le tâla Miçra varna au tâla Simhavikrama.
Messiaen call his poem "half French surrealism, half invented language" [1]drawing for the former on the love symbols and magicians of Tristan and Isolda, Ariadne, Orpheus, Merlin et Viviane, and for the latter on soft or loud syllables freely chosen for their musical rhythm. La langue inventée procède de syllabes choisies par l'auteur, qui mettent en valeur les rythmes musicaux selon leur douceur ou leur dureté.
