Sakura Wars is regarded as one of the most influential and successful games on the Sega Saturn.

Sakura Wars begins in the Imperial Capital, Tokyo, where the happiness is suddenly interrupted by a Wakiji. Just when the Wakiji attacks, Sakura Shinguji kills it by slicing it in half with her sword, Arataka. Meanwhile, Navy Ensign Ichirō Ōgami is assigned to be captain of Tokyo's Imperial Assault Force Flower Division by Lieutenant General Ikki Yoneda. When Ōgami and Sakura first arrive at the Great Imperial Theater, they meet Iris, Maria Tachibana and Sumire Kanzaki. However, the Black Hive of Darkness suddenly attacks Tokyo and they manage to defeat Satan. Ri Kohran arrives and the group defeats Tenkai, the evil organization's leader. Maria, after witnessing Ōgami being injured during an attack by Setsuna while saving a child, goes out to fight him alone, but she is soon captured.
