" in the third of Richard the Second, motion was made that no Butcher should kil no flesh within London, but at Knightsbridge, or such like distance of place from the wals of the citie" (" Survey," ed. 1603, fo. 319). Dr. R. R. Sharpe, the learned and courteous Records Clerk of the Corporation, has referred me to a writ addressed to the Mayor and Sheriffs, dated Sept. 26, 44 Edw. Ill, enjoining the slaughtering of beasts at Stratford and Knightsbridge, instead of in the City ; followed immediately by another writ exempt- ing the butchers of " Estchep " and " les Stokkes " from the previous order (" Letter Book " G, fos. cclxxxi, cclxxxi b), and the order was confirmed by another writ dated Feb. 23, 10 Ric. II (" Letter Book" H, fo. ccxiii b).
