Ian Andrew Harkes (born March 30, 1995) in an American soccer player who last played for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons men's soccer program. He served as club captain for Wake Forest as well as several academy teams for D.C. United.
Harkes is the most recent receipient of the MAC Hermann Trophy, which is awarded to the best college soccer player in the United States.
Career[edit]
High school and academy[edit]
Prior to college soccer, Harkes played high school soccer at Gonzaga College High School and for the youth academy of D.C. United. While in D.C. United's academy, Harkes served as the club captain for the U-18 and U-16 academy teams. During his junior and senior years at Gonzaga College High School, Harkes served as the varsity captain. He earned the team's Most Valuable Offensive Player in both 2011 and 2012.
His success with D.C. United's Academy setup and at Gonzaga High earned him several accolades. In 2011, Harkes was named the Gatorade Player of the Year in D.C. In 2012, he was selected as an NSCAA First Team High School All-American, and was selected to play in the High School All-American Game that year. In addition, he was named to the WCAC First Team, was namd an All-Met by The Washington Post, and was selected twice to the NSCAA First Team All-South High School Region.
Collegiate[edit]
Ahead of the 2013 NCAA Division I men's soccer season, Harkes signed a National Letter of Intent to play for Wake Forest University. On August 30, 2013 he made his Wake Forest debut starting and playing 74 minutes in a 1–0 loss against Coastal Carolina.[1] Harkes earned his first collegiate points a week later, dishing out two assists against Boston College on September 7, 2016.

Recorded the first two points of his career with a pair of assists at Boston College (9/7) ... Dished out one assist in back-to-back games vs. Virginia Tech (10/4) and at NC State (10/8) ... Had another assist in a win over Davidson (10/22) ... Had another two-assist game at Duke (10/25) ... Scored his first-career goal in a win over Syracuse (11/8).
2014 (Sophomore) Started 16 games in 2014 for Wake Forest ... Scored two goals and had three assists for a total of seven points ... Continued to dominate the midfield and was a standout in the ACC ... Scored his first goal of the season in the opener vs. No. 4 UCLA (8/29) ... Had an assist in the win over Cleveland State (9/7) and in the win over VMI (9/23) ... Scored in the 2-1 win over Akron (9/30) ... Had an assist in the victory vs. Duke (10/3) ... Played every minute at Clemson (11/9) in the ACC Tournament and in the NCAA Tournament vs. UMBC (11/20).
2015 (Junior) Served as a team captain and started all 22 games on the season ... Scored one goal and added four assists for six points on the season ... Was named a First Team All-ACC performer while also earning ACC Championship All-Tournament Team and Second Team NSCAA All-South region honors ... Scored his lone goal of the season on a penalty kick in the Elite Eight against Stanford (12/5) to tie the game at 1-1 in the second half ... Had the primary assist on both of the game-winning goals in the Second Round and Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament, both coming with less than 10 minutes to go in regulation ... Was named to Top Drawer Soccer's Preseason National Top 100 list (No. 61) and was No. 16 in the ACC in TDS's preseason rankings ... Checked in at No. 67 in the nation during the season and No. 16 in the ACC ... Finished the year ranked No. 33 in the nation and No. 7 in the ACC ... Earned TDS Team of the Week honors after assisting in the game-winning goal against Indiana in the 88th minute ... Ended the season tied for 28th in program history with 14 assists ... Was named to the 2016 All-ACC Academic Team after the season.

Personal life[edit]
Harkes is the son of former U.S. international, John Harkes, who is now the coach of United Soccer League club, FC Cincinnati. Ian is also the son of Cindi Harkes who played collegiate soccer for Virginia and professionally in the W-League for the Maryland Pride and for Sheffield Wednesday Ladies. Ian has two younger sisters, Lauren and Lily. In high school, Harkes was a member of the National Honor Society.
