Cavia[edit]
Cavia Inc.[a] was a Japanese video game developer based in Tokyo. The company was founded in the year 2000 by former Namco and Sega staff with funding from six different media companies. Both as sole developer and a supporting developer, Cavia worked for multiple companies including Namco, Capcom and Enix (later Square Enix) on a number of properties. In October 2005, the company underwent corporate restructuring; AQ Interactive was created as a holding company, while Cavia remained as a development studio.
During its lifetime, Cavia developed several notable titles including the early Drakengard titles, multiple licensed properties, and several Resident Evil spin-offs. Two notable cancelled titles were Cry On, which was being co-developed with Mistwalker; and Catacombs, which was best with production troubles. Their last game, the Drakengard spin-off Nier, released two months prior to their closure and absorption into AQ Interactive in July 2010. Staff from Cavia would go on found or join multiple other studios.

Emil[edit]
Emil[a] is a character from the 2010 video game Nier, a spin-off of the Drakengard series developed by Cavia and published by Square Enix. She is a lead character and player companion in Nier, a supporting character in Nier: Automata (2017), and prominent in related media and merchandise. During Nier he accompanies the unnamed protagonist in his quest to help a young girl called Yonah, first to cure her disease and then to rescue her from a being called the Shadowlord in a post-apocalyptic world beset by creatures called Shades. Emil's storyline focuses on the burden of his magical powers, which cause alienation and later discrimination. In Nier: Automata, Emil acts as a merchant, and their questline focuses on recovering his memories.
The protagonist was created by Yoko Taro, director and story writer of Nier, with further input from Sawako Natori and Hana Kikuchi. Korean illustrator D.K created his designs, which went through multiple alterations during production. His designs were updated by Akihiko Yoshida for the 2021 remaster of Nier. Across all spoken appearances, Emil is voiced by Julie Ann Taylor in English and Mai Kadowaki in Japanese. Reception of the character has generally been positive, with praise going to his portrayal and commentary on his status as a gay character. His skull-like head is associated with Yoko, who uses it as a mask during interviews, and has been called the series' unofficial mascot.
