Life and career[edit]

1990–2015: Early life and career beginnings[edit]

Kim Tae-ri was born on April 24, 1990, in Seoul. After graduating from Youngshin Nursing Business High School [ko], Kim studied Journalism and Communication at Kyung Hee University from 2008 to 2012.[1][2] Kim was inspired to become an actress in her second year of college after joining a college theater club.[3]

After graduating from college, Kim worked for a year as a member of the technical crew of Iru theatre troupe in Daehakro.[4] Later, Kim was cast as a understudy for Kang Ae-shim [ko] in the 2012 production of Spoonface Steinberg but did not get to perform on stage.[5] She subsequently acted in the plays Pansy and Ask for Love, and was double-cast for the rerun of Spoonface Steinberg in 2013.[5] In the same year, she filmed Moon Young, a short film which debuted at the Seoul Independent Film Festival in 2015; a theatrical version was released in 2017.[6][7] In 2014, Kim joined J-Wide Company and appeared in a number of TV commercials.[8] During this period, she acted in several short films and attended many auditions for film roles but faced multiple rejections.[9]

2016–2020: Transition to film and television, breakthrough and rise to prominence[edit]

In 2016, Kim made her feature film debut in Park Chan-wook's The Handmaiden, where she was chosen from 1,500 actresses who auditioned for the role.[10] For her performance in the film, she won the award for Best New Actress at the Blue Dragon Film Awards, Director's Cut Awards, Buil Film Awards, and Busan Film Critics Awards. Park recounted his first impression of Kim reminded him strongly of his first meeting with actress Kang Hye-jung, who had her career breakthrough in Park's 2003 film Oldboy.[11][12] That same year, Kim made her first television appearance with a brief cameo alongside Park in the first episode of Entourage.[13][14]

In 2017, Kim starred in the political thriller 1987: When the Day Comes as part of its ensemble cast. The film garnered her a nomination for Best Actress at the Grand Bell Awards.[15][16][17] The film , becoming one of the highest-grossing domestic films in South Korea.

In 2018, Kim headlined the Korean film adaptation of the manga series Little Forest alongside Ryu Jun-yeol and Jin Ki-joo,[18][19] For her portrayal of Song Hye-won, Kim won the Best Actress Award at the 18th Director's Cut Awards and received nominations for the same award at the 39th Blue Dragon Film Awards, the 54th Baeksang Arts Awards, the 27th Buil Film Awards and the 24th Chunsa Film Awards.[20][21]

That same year, Kim had her first starring role on television as Go Ae-shin in the historical drama Mr. Sunshine, the third collaboration between screenwriter Kim Eun-sook and director Lee Eung-bok after the commercially successful series Descendants of the Sun (2016) and Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (2016–2017).[14][22] Mr. Sunshine became the sixth highest-rated television South Korean series in Korean cable television history at the time, recording its highest-rating (18.1%) and viewership (4.6 million) in the final episode.[23][24] equal to co-star and veteran actor Lee Byung-hun. For her performance, Kim won the Best New Actress Award along with Won Jin-ah at the 6th APAN Star Awards and received a nomination for the Best Actress (Television) Award at the 55th Baeksang Arts Awards.[25][26]

2021–present: High-profile roles[edit]

In 2021, Kim starred as Captain Jang in Jo Sung-hee's Space Sweepers, regarded as the first Korean space blockbuster.[27][28] Kim was drawn to the film due to its genre and her character's role, as she said: "I don't think there has ever been a [Korean] film in which a woman was a captain".[27] After its release on Netflix,[29] the film received generally positive reviews, complimenting the characters and the special effects.[30] In a review for Decider, Johnny Loftus described Kim's performance as the "picture of laconic cool" and likened her interpretation of the character's selfishness and greediness to Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok (2017).[31] In July 2021, Kim moved to Management MMM after her contract with J-Wide expired.[32]

She returned to television in 2022, starring in the coming-of-age romantic series Twenty-Five Twenty-One,[33][34] which marked her second collaboration with one of the directors of Mr. Sunshine, Jung Ji-hyun.[35] Upon reading the script, Kim was drawn to the "bright, energetic nature" of her character Na Hee-do, an high school fencer overcoming difficulties during the IMF crisis.[35][33] In preparation for the role, she learned fencing for six months, watched numerous YouTube videos and requested an expert on set during fencing scenes.[36] For the series' soundtrack, Kim and her co-stars recorded the song "With", which peaked at number 40 on South Korea's Circle Digital Chart.[37] Twenty-Five Twenty-One became one of the highest-rated South Korean series in Korean cable television history, recording its highest rating (11.5%) and viewership (3 million) in the last episode.[38][39] The series was also successful on Netflix, leading to Kim's rise in popularity among international audiences.[40] Reviewers praised Kim's performance, highlighting her wide range of emotions and chemistry with co-star Nam Joo-hyuk; Song Kyung-won of South Korean magazine Cine21 deemed Kim vital to the success of the series.[41] For her portrayal of Na Hee-do, she won both the Best Actress (Television) Award and the Most Popular Actress Award at the 58th Baeksang Arts Awards.[42]

Later that year, Kim starred as Lee Ahn in the first part of Choi Dong-hoon's two-part science fiction action film Alienoid alongside Little Forest co-star Ryu Jun-yeol and Kim Woo-bin.[43][44] She chose to appear in the film due to its "unique concept" and felt "honored" to have been cast,[45][40] commenting: "I don't think there's been any production where I've been able to express my opinions and communicate with the director quite as much as this."[46] Kim attended action school and learned gymnastics, various types of martial arts and shooting to prepare for the role.[47] Both parts were shot simultaneously for 13 months, although the second part is set to premiere in 2023.[48][44] The film was a box-office failure, earning $12 million worldwide against a budget of over ₩30 billion ($22.9 million).[49][50] It received mixed reviews in South Korea,[44][40] with Kim Boram of Yonhap News Agency criticizing the story but appreciating Kim and Ryu's chemistry and action sequences.[51] Defending the film, the actress said: "The first part was a set-up of a vast, five-hour-long story. [...] The second part will be less focused on explaining. I want the audience to understand that the explanation was unavoidable to enjoy the story."[44] International critics wrote more positive reviews,[52] often praising the film's ensemble cast.[53][54][55]

Kim currently stars as Gu San-yeong, a possessed woman, in the horror television series Revenant (2023). Kim first learned of the series through screenwriter Kim Eun-hee and decided to join the production due to the "high quality" of the story and its interesting combination of themes, including the youth's struggles and Eastern occult, based on Korean folklore.[56] The series recorded good television ratings and received positive reviews, highlighting Kim's performance as both the woman and the demon.[57][58][59]
