Club Career

Sydney FC

2017-2020: Sydney FC

Buffin arrived to Sydney FC with 8 other members of the ‘Gladesville Galacticos’ (the other 11 signed for other A-League clubs) ahead of the 2017-18 season to much fanfare. (Thoughts on signing for Sydney FC).

Buffin made his Sydney FC debut on the 26th of July 2017 in a 2-0 win over Whittlesea Rangers in the FFA Cup. His first goal would come in his third appearance, in a 2-0 win away to Valentine Phoenix in the FFA Cup. His first A-League goal would also come in his third A-League appearance, in a 2-1 loss against the Western Sydney Wanderers. Buffin’s debut season would end in disappointment, finishing in 2nd place and losing in the semi finals to their bitter rivals, the Wanderers 1-0, as well as being knocked out in the FFA Cup semi final on penalties to the Wanderers earlier in the season. Weeks later, they would also be knocked out of the Asian Champions League round of 16 after a 5-4 loss on aggregate to Beijing Guoan.

The 2018/19 season was no better for Sydney FC, knocked out in the first round of the FFA Cup 2-1 in extra time yet again to their rival Sydney team, the Western Sydney Wanderers.

Sydney FC would also fail to qualify for the Asian Champions League, after beating Vietnamese outfit Da Nang 2-0 in the preliminary round, they would then lose 3-2 in the playoff to Chinese side, Huaxia Xinfu. In the league, Sydney FC finished 3rd, but after beating the Wanderers comprehensively 3-0 in the elimination final, they would lose in the semi finals yet again, this time to Wellington Phoenix on penalties after a 0-0 draw.

Ahead of the 2019/20 season, there was much more pessimism around Sydney FC, as despite being the pre-season favourites each time, they constantly failed to deliver despite possessing majority of the best players from the Gladesville Galacticos. However, it was in Buffin’s final season at the club where Sydney played their best football.  Sydney FC went on to finish Premiers, ultimately defeating Perth Glory 2-0 in the grand final. Sydney FC would also beat Guangzhou 5-3 on aggregate in the Asian Champions League round of 16, successfully overturning a 2-1 loss at home in the first leg. However, this would be Buffin’s final appearance for the club, as he would move to AC Milan. Buffin was named in the A-League Team of the Season in his final season at the club.

Reggiana and Sassuolo

2020-2022: Move to AC Milan, Reggiana and Sassuolo loans

In an unprecedented move, AC Milan manager Vincenzo Montella shocked the footballing world by signing all 20 members of the Gladesville Galacticos for a combined fee of £20,000,000, the biggest move in Australian football history. Montella said of the move that despite making progress in recent years, the move was designed to win AC Milan’s first title after 9 years without success, and to create a long term dynasty. This group transfer attracted intense media and fan attention, although many considered this to be a marketing gimmick rather than a genuine injection of youth prospects. The move did admittedly result in a large marketing campaign for AC Milan - captioned ‘il futuro è ora’ (the future is now). Despite some media criticism, the fanfare of the move was largely positive, as the Gladesville Galacticos were viewed as a classic underdog story; a group of kids taking on the cut-throat world of professional football.

Of the 20 Gladesville Galacticos, only 6 remained at AC Milan for the entire season (with majority being loaned out). Buffin was one of these loaned out members, being loaned to Serie B side Reggiana. (Thoughts on being loaned out) Despite playing mostly as a defensive midfielder and a centre back, he was played as a striker for the Italian side. His most impressive performances included braces against Avellino, Trapani (that included an 82nd minute winner), and Brescia. However, Reggiana would be relegated to the Serie C. David finished the season with 11 goals and 5 assists. David was once again loaned out the following season, this time playing in his natural position for Serie A side Sassuolo. (Thoughts on being loaned out again) This provided a platform for Buffin to play at a higher level to showcase his abilities to his parent club. He would enjoy a solid season at the club, making 34 appearances as Sassuolo finished mid table.

AC Milan

2022-2024: Moving up the pecking order and treble winner

Buffin would return and remain at Milan for the following year, being apart of a midfield rotation that saw him make 21 starts and a total of 35 appearances. David’s first goal for AC Milan would be the sole goal in a 1-0 win away to Atalanta. A young AC Milan side would continue to gain experience and improve despite finishing 3rd and not competing for the title. However, Buffin would win his first trophy at Milan, with a 1-0 win over Juventus in the Italian Cup final. AC Milan would also have a strong run into the Europa League final, only to lose on penalties to Chelsea after a 0-0 draw.

The following season would be somewhat stagnant for Buffin, as he saw his playing time significantly cut, with N’Golo Kante preferred in the defensive midfield role. Buffin only started 2 games all season, and was resigned to a substitute role, making 23 substitute appearances in all competitions. Despite this, the 2023-2024 season was David’s most successful at club level, as AC Milan’s blossoming young talent that included 7 members of the Gladesville Galacticos developed into treble winners. This would re-emerge AC Milan as a European force and the Galacticos experiment turned from gimmick to success. AC Milan would defeat Inter Milan 4-2 in the Italian Cup final, secure the Serie A title with a 3-0 win over Juventus on the final day, and defeat Liverpool 2-0 in the Champions League final with Andrea Belotti scoring twice in the final 10 minutes. 2024-2028: Established starter, highs and lows

In the 2024-2025 season, Buffin would establish himself as AC Milan’s starting defensive midfielder. After winning the treble th previous season, expectations were high for AC Milan, they were no longer the underdog. AC Milan kicked off the season well, defeating Barcelona 3-0 in the European Super Cup, and Juvetnus 2-1 in the Italian Super Cup. AC Milan would also win the Club World Cup, defeating Ulsan Hyundai 3-0 in the semi final, and Mexican side Club América 2-0 in the final. AC Milan were in a great patch of form with a 27-game unbeaten streak as they looked to defend their treble. This would include vital wins over Roma, Juventus and Lazio in the Serie A, and eliminating Lazio and Napoli in the Italian Cup. After securing a 2-0 win at the San Siro against Atletico Madrid, it seemed AC Milan would secure a passage to the quarter finals. However, Jose Francisco Dacosta would stun Milan with goals in the 89th and 91st minute to send the game to extra time, where Atletico Madrid would ultimately win on penalties. Nonetheless, AC Milan would secure crucial victories against Inter Milan and Napoli in the Serie A, and scraped through into the Italian Cup after defeating Cremonese. After consecutive losses to Brescia and Sampdoria, their city rivals Inter Milan were breathing down their necks, but 16 points in their final six games ensured they retained their Serie A crown. AC Milan would also retain the Italian Cup, defeating Roma 1-0 in the final.

In a major transfer, key Gladesville Galactico and future Balon d’Or winner Aaron Leone would sign for Manchester United, with rival clubs seeing this as a perfect opportunity to close the gap with AC Milan. AC Milan would begin the season well however, demolishing Roma 5-0 in the Italian Super Cup. The season would ultimately end in heartbreak for AC Milan though, failing to hit the heights of the the previous season. They would progress to the Champions League semi finals, defeating FC Porto 2-0 and Olympique Marseille 3-2 on aggregate, only to be defeated by Manchester City 2-1 in the semi finals. Despite being knocked out of the Champions League semi finals, a 2-0 win over Juventus in the Italian Cup final would provide a good bit of momentum. Heading into the final day, AC Milan were three points ahead of second placed Napoli, needing only a draw to secure the title. Despite their superior goal difference, if both sides were equal on points Napoli would win the title via head to head results. Instead of celebration, tragedy would occur.

AC Milan fell behind to a shock 2-0 deficit inside ten minutes away to Cagliari with no change at half time, with the saving grace being Napoli too were down 2-1 at home to Palermo. However, in the other game, Palermo received a red card in the 55th minute, and Andrea Pinamonti would equalise in the 79th minute. AC Milan would continue to push for a route back into the game to no avail, losing 2-0. As this game finished first, there was a nervous wait for the full time whistle in Napoli who were drawing at the time. Then “the tragedy” would strike, an own goal by Palermo in the 94th minute handing Napoli the title. As news filtered into the stadium, the Milan players were subsequently mocked and jeered by the Cagliari fans - with the day being described by the Milan faithful as “la tragedia” (the tragedy). After the previous seasons disappointment, AC Milan had a point to prove and began the season in scintillating form. A 2-0 Italian Super Cup win against Napoli was followed by 32 points in the opening twelve games of the Serie A, where Buffin played a pivotal role in a Milan side that only conceded 3 goals in the same period. AC Milan would face off away to Cagliari once again, seeking revenge for the previous season’s tragedy. Unfortunately, Cagliari was once again victorious, 3-1. Buffin was later spotted angrily clashing with Cagliari fans after the game, who were once again mocking the Milan side (Comment on incident). AC Milan were also knocked out of the Italian Cup by Atalanta, but would cruise to Serie A title, grappling it back from Napoli. AC Milan would also have a strong Champions League run, defeating Sporting CP 6-1, Bayern Munich 4-2, and Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 en route to the final, where they would face Aaron Leone and Manchester United. Buffin was unsuccessful in winning a second continental title, as Manchester United ran out 2-0 winners in Seville. Buffin would however earn his first selection into the Serie A Team of the Season. AC Milan would once again retain the Italian Super Cup the following season, defeating Lazio 2-0. However, two consecutive losses would be a poor start to the domestic campaign. Milan would also be eliminated in the round of 16 in the Champions League, losing to Borussia Dortmund 2-1 on aggregate. The Serie A season was set for a tight finish, AC Milan at the top were equal on points with Napoli, one point ahead of Roma, and four points ahead of Juventus with six games to go. A disappointing 1-0 loss at home to Juventus would push Milan down to third. In the midst of an intense close to the season, AC Milan did manage to defeat Juventus 2-0 after extra time in the Italian Cup final. In the Serie A, Napoli and Roma would both drop points in the coming games, while AC Milan and Juventus won their next four games. Heading into the final day, AC Milan would play away to Roma, and where one point ahead of Juventus, and three points ahead of Roma, meaning a win would secure the title. Once again, AC Milan would fail to perform when it mattered. Down 2-1 inside 25 minutes, Milan had the chance to turn things around when Roma were reduced to 10 men after 36 minutes. However, despite periods of sustained pressure were only able to score a 94th minute equaliser. Juventus defeated Palermo 3-0 on the final day, meaning they pipped Milan for the title. There was growing contempt for Palermo among the Milan fans, as it was now twice where their lossses on the final day allowed AC Milan’s rivals to win the title.

2028-2033: Prime years

Vengeance was achieved, as AC Milan defeated Juventus 2-0 in the Italian Super Cup to kick start their 2028-2029 campaign. The domestic season began with 14 points in six games, including Buffin scoring the sole goal in a 1-0 win over Napoli. Three consecutive 1-0 losses would provide a stumbling block, but AC Milan would continue to grind oout results, with Buffin once again scoring the sole goal in a 1-0 win away to Lecce. AC Milan were knocked out in the Italian Cup after a penalty loss to Cagliari, and the Champions League after a 2-1 loss to Barcelona in the round of 16. However, Ernesto Valverde’s side cruised to the Serie A title behind one of the strongest defensive seasons seen to date, conceding just 16 goals in 38 games, with Buffin one of they key cogs in the defensive unit. At the conclusion of the season, Buffin would be named into the Serie A Team of the Season for the second time.

AC Milan would once again retain the Italian Super Cup with a resounding 4-0 win over Atalanta. They had a reasonable start to the Serie A campaign, but lost 2 of their first 3 Champions League games, but three consecutive wins would secure a safe passage to the knockout stages. Milan would finish the calendary year poorly, losing 4 of their last 5 games in the year, as they were also eliminated in the Italian Cup in a 3-0 home loss to Atalanta. Things would turnaround in the new year, with AC Milan earning 29 points in the first 11 games of the year. This also including a thrilling tie in the Champions League round of 16 against Manchester United. After losing the first leg 2-0 at Old Trafford, AC Milan scored 2 first half goals at the San Siro, United were reduced to 10 men in the 55th minute, and after a 2-2 aggregate score, Milan scored a further two goals in extra time to complete a remarkable turnaround. After defeating Manchester City 4-0 in the first leg, it seemed Milan would make the semi finals, however, Manchester City won the second leg 4-0, scoring another two goals in extra time to complete an even more remarkable turnaround than Milan did, winning 6-4 on aggregate and knocking AC Milan out. In the Serie A, AC Milan lost away to Juventus 2-0 in the third last game of the season, reducing the gap to just one point. This time, AC Milan would get the job done, defeating both Inter Milan and Fiorentina 2-0 in the final two games to retain their domestic crown. Buffin once again was named in the Serie A Team of the Season.

Despite winning the Italian Super Cup, defeating Sassuolo 2-0, the 2030-2031 season would be a largely disappointing one for AC Milan. A five game winless run would bring Ernesto Valverde’s six-year reign at the San Siro to the end, and followng two draws while searching for a new manager, Carlo Ancelotti returned to the club with a difficult task. His first match in charge was the second leg in the Champions League round of 16 with the scores tied at 1-1. However, his tenure would begin with a 3-1 loss as Milan crashed out of Europe. AC Milan were also in a perilous position as Champions League qualification was looking increasingly difficult. Ancelotti would steady the ship with six consecutive Serie A wins (and five clean sheets), and qualify for the Italian Cup final on away goals courtesy of a 90th minute Riccardo Morsolini equaliser. AC Milan would still however fail to qualify for the Champions League, losing to Atalanta in the second last game and allowing their rivals to take over. Some consolation was achieved, as AC Milan defeated Cagliari on penalties to win the Italian Cup.

After eight consecutive Italian Super Cup’s, AC Milan’s reign would come to an end, going down to Juventus 1-0. The domestic season would start well however, kicking off the campain with six straight wins. The new year would provide somewhat of a blip, losing to their greatest title rivals Juventus, 5-2. Milan would also lose 2-0 in both the first leg of the Italian Cup semi final against Roma, and the Europa League round of 32 against Galatasaray. A 1-0 win was not enough to get past Roma, but Milan turned things around with a 3-0 win against Galatasary at the San Siro. 32 points in 13 games in the Serie A would secure the title with a game in hand, and Milan would also make the Europa League final, going through Leicester 3-1, Stuttgart 6-2, and Liverpool 4-2. However, Leverkusen would win in the final on penalties. Nonetheless, it was a good “bounce back” season for Milan, and for Buffin personally as he regained selection into the Serie A Team of the Season.

AC Milan would kick off the 2032-2033 season by regaining the Italian Super Cup, defeating Roma 2-1. A strong beginning to the Serie A would also follow, and despite Buffin’s continued importance as a holding midfielder, his disciplinary record would be called into question with 3 red cards throughout the season, including 2 red cards in the spcae of a week. AC Milan would still however qualify for the Italian Cup semi final, defeating Inter Milan 4-2, despite Buffin being sent off in the 45th minute at 1-0 up. Although they would lose 2-1 on aggregate to Arsenal in the Champions League round of 16 thanks to a 90th minute Greg Chandler winner. AC Milan would progress to the Italian Cup final, seeing past Genoa 7-4 on aggregate, and were on course for a domestic double in a competitive Serie A. With eight games remaining, AC Milan were four points behind Juventus, who they would also play in the Italian Cup final. A 2-0 win, followed by vital victories over Inter Milan and Napoli ensured Milan remained in the hunt. However, heartbreaking injury time goals conceded against both Lazio and Sampdoria resigned Milan to two defeats late on in the season, and remain two points behind Juventus on the final day. AC Milan would land the first blow, defeating Juventus in the Italian Cup final 2-0, but would need Juventus to drop points on the final day. Juventus scored in the first minute on the final day at home to Sassuolo, while AC Milan were deadlocked away to Carpi at half time. However, a turnaround condemned Juventus to a shock 2-1 loss, while Milan scored three second half goals to win 3-1, to retain the Serie A title and put their final day demons of yesteryear behind them. At the conclusion of the season, Buffin was named in the Serie A Team of the Season for the fifth time.

2033-2036: Final years at AC Milan and collective decline

The successes of the previous season would be as good as it got for Milan, as the team as a whole, as well as a now 33-year old Buffin would begin to decline. The season would start well however, defeating Juventus on penalties to win the Italian Super Cup, and going on a six-game winning streak to start the Serie A season. AC Milan were eliminated from the Italian Cup 1st round at home to Cremonese, losing 1-0, and from the Champions League quarter final, going down to Atletico Madrid 2-0. The club would also only win 5 of their last 16 Serie A games, with just 18 points, resigning them to fourth place, 13 points off Inter Milan in first.

Ahead of the 2034-2035 season, Carlo Ancelotti would retire from management, and new manager Christophe Jallet was unable to stop the slide. AC Milan would finish in 11th place, their worst Serie A finish in 53 years, as well as losing 16 league games, which is the most in the historic clubs history. In addition to the poor league performance, AC Milan were also eliminated at home to Crotone in the first round of the Italian Cup, losing 2-1. The only bright spot of the season was the clubs Europa League run - defeating Galatasaray 6-4, Sevilla 2-1, and Real Betis 6-3 to make the semi finals. After defeating Tottenham 2-0 in the first leg, AC Milan would capitulate in the second leg, losing 5-0 in a result that included four second half goals.  Speaking of the clubs shortcomings, Buffin claimed (Thoughts on poor season).

Buffin would announce his decision to retire at the conclusion of the 2035-2036 season, citing (reason for retirement). Without any European commitments, AC Milan experienced somewhat of a rejuvenation in the new season under new manager Aleksandar Jankovic, going undefeated, and winning 9 of their first 10 games. Another first round exit from the Italian Cup loomed, as they went down to Juventus 1-0. Nonetheless, AC Milan were in third place, and 2 points shy of Palermo in second place. However, Milan would experience a collapse in the run-in, losing six of their final eight games, slipping down to sixth in the process, and once again failing to qualify for European football. Buffin would at least taste victory in his final career game, defeating champions-elect Juventus 2-1 at the San Siro, and was substituted off in the second half to a standing ovation. International Career

2018: The decision

Italy failed to qualify for their first world cup in 60 years, after failing to qualify for the 2018 edition. Several of the Gladesville Galacticos were eligible for both the Australian and Italian national teams. As many of these players excelled in the 2018-19 season, and especially the 2019-20 season, there was intense speculation over which nation they would choose to represent. Buffin, alongside several others would constantly deflect questions around the subject when quizzed. It was decided their decision must be unanimous, and they ultimately chose to represent Italy over Australia in the 2019-20 season, (Reasoning behind decision) This decision was met with heated criticism by the Australian footballing public, as it was seen as turning their back on their country of birth and growth. Buffin, alongside the others were targeted with constant abuse by opposing fans in Australian domestic games. (Thoughts towards Australian fans)

2023-2024: International debut and European Championship

Years after the ‘decision’, Buffin would finally be called up to the national side in March 2023, making his debut in a friendly 2-0 win against Chile. He would win his first international trophy; the European International Trophy, with a 3-1 win over Portugal in the final. David’s first goal for his country would come in September 2023, a 3rd minute goal in a 4-0 friendly win over Egypt.

Italy would also host the 2024 UEFA European Football Championship, the perfect opportunity to restore national pride, and Buffin would be called up to the squad. Italy’s attack would struggle, with a 0-0 draw against Czech Republic on the opening night. In the second match, Italy found themselves 2-0 down inside 10 minutes against Montenegro, and were on the brink of a shock exit at a home tournament, but would rally to an eventual 5-3 victory. Italy resorted to their old ways with a 0-0 draw in the final group game against Ukraine, scraping through the group stage.  Italy would defeat an unfancied Romania side in unconvincing fashion, 2-1 in the round of 16. In the quarter final against Ireland, Italy were reduced to 10 men before the half hour mark, and the game finished with yet another 0-0 draw. In extra time, Buffin was given a straight red for a reckless challenge, reducing Italy to 9 men. Instead of clinging onto penalties they somehow managed to score an 118th minute winner courtesy of Pietro Pellegri to go through to the semi finals. Against Germany, Italy would draw 1-1 and go to extra time again, with a 105th minute Patrick Cutrone goal sending Italy to the final. Italy played the Netherlands in the final at the San Siro, and poor discipline hurt them again, being reduced to 10 men on 50 minutes. The game finished 0-0 once again, for the fourth time in the tournament, and went to extra time for the third time in the row. But yet again, Italy would score in extra time through Aaron Leone’s 105th minute penalty that sealed Italy’s first European Football Championship in 56 years.

Italy’s tournament victory was considered to be very unconvincing, but the side were commended for their “dogged, gritty and resolute” character that helped them grind out results consistently without playing particularly well.

2025-2026: Campioni del mondo

The European Championship victory seemed to boost the confidence of Italy collectively, as there was an up turn in performances, winning all 12 games during 2025, including a second consecutive European International League title, defeating Belgium 3-0 in the final.

There was a fresh optimism among Italian supporters leading up to the World Cup, as they were playing well and their young core continued to develop. (Thoughts on first WC call up)

But once again, Italy’s World Cup began in unconvincing fashion, needing a 90th minute winner to beat Paraguay in the first game. In the second match however, Italy won in an 8-1 rout over Jamaica, before coming back from 2 goals down to draw 2-2 with the Netherlands in an entertaining final group game. In the round of 16, Italy defeated Poland 5-1, followed by a resounding 5-2 victory over England in the quarter finals. In the semi finals, after a 1-1 draw, Italy would score in the 116th and 120th minute of extra time against Spain to send them through to the final. Italy would face France in the final, the side that eliminated them from the past three competitions. However, Italy would avenge this and repeat their 2006 success, as they comfortably defeated France 3-0.

Italy were lauded for their resounding success, in contrast with an unconvincing European Championship win two years earlier. (Thoughts on World Cup success).

2027-2029: Back to back European titles and Confederations Cup

Italy would win their third consecutive European International League. In the final, Russia led 1-0, only for Italy to be awarded a 95th minute penalty. Aaron Leone missed the penalty, but scored the rebound to send the tie to extra time, where they won in the 116th minute.

Now lookng to defend their European crown in 2028, Italy in the group stage would beat Ukraine 3-0, Bosnia & Herzegovina 5-1, and draw with Romania 1-1. In the knockout stages, Italy were far more convincing than the 2024 edition, defeating Czech Republic 4-1, Norway 2-0, and most impressively, host nation Spain 5-1 in the semi final. In the final, Italy played rivals France yet again. Italy were reduced to 10 men after just three minutes. In difficult circumstances, Italy showed their resilience, winning 3-1. Italy were now gathering momentum and considered one of the great national teams. Buffin was named among the dream team substitutes.

Italy continued their fine form, with Buffin scoring in a 5-0 win over Wales in the European International League semi final despite finishing the game with nine men, before defeating the Netherlands 4-1 in the final. However in their first Confederations Cup game, Italy were stunned 1-0 against Australia, but clicked back into gear as Leone scored in remarkable 7-0 victory over Brazil. The next game although would go down as one of the most unbelievable scorelines in football history, as Italy destroyed New Zealand 21-0. This was the record for the most goals scored by a team in a major international tournament. Italy would play hosts Spain yet again in the semi finals, and after a 1-1 draw, Italy won 3-1. Italy would meet Australia again in the final. This time however, Italy were comfortable 3-1 winners.

2030: Best national side in history

Italy would face the dauting task of also having to defend their global crown. This time Italy found themselves as tournament favourites as their new golden generation were hitting their prime. Italy cruised through the group stage, defeating Uzbekistan 5-1, Cameroon 5-0, and Germany 3-0. In the knockout stages, Italy defeated Brazil 3-1, but Buffin’s red card saw him suspended for the quarter final, where they defeated Mexico 4-0. In the semi final against Portugal, Italy were down to 10 men and sent to extra time, but would still manage three goals to win 4-1. Italy would play the hosts Spain for the third time in the row in the final. Juanjo’s goal for Spain had them up 1-0 at the break. But in the second half, Italy would turn things around to win 2-1. Buffin would be named in the World Cup Dream Team at the conclusion of the tournament.

After this World Cup success, opinion shifted towards the Italian side being the best in history, as they held the World Cup (and defended it), the European Football Championship (and defended it), the Confederations Cup, and the European International League (won five times in a row).

2031-2032: Final years and silverware for Italy

Once again, Italy would retain the European International League. After scraping through on penalties against the Netherlands in the semi final, they were pitted with England in the final, and despite England going up 2-0 after 15 minutes, Italy would eventually win 5-3.

In the 2032 European Championship, Italy would win all three group games, In the round of 16 against Russia, Vladimir Dmitriev gave Russia a late lead and Italy’s dominance of major tournaments was put in jeopardy, but an 83rd minute goal sent the game to extra time, where two goals secured a 3-1 victory. Once again, Italy fell behind in the quarter finals against Wales, needing a second half and extra time goal to turn things around. The semi final and finals were far more comofrtable, as Italy retained the European Championship after defeating Greece 3-0, and Portugal 3-1.

Buffin announced his retirement from international football at the conclusion of the tournament, (Reason for retirement and thoughts on international career). He finished with 98 caps and 2 goals for his country.

Buffin played primarily as a defensive midfielder, but would also fill in a central midfielder and especially as a centre back. For the national side, he would play mostly as a centre back as the Italian national team managers typically played without a defensive midfielder. Despite not being particularly tall, Buffin was physically strong, consistent, aggressive and a hard-tackling, energetic and combative holding midfielder. He also possessed exceptional positional sense and decisiveness, as well as above average athleticism and stamina. Buffin also was above average technically, making him a versatile option who also played as a striker on his loan period at Reggiana. Buffin was regarded as a 'water carrier', a player who consistently did a lot of the team's dirty work without recognition, to enable the more creative players in the side to flourish. In his time at Milan, Buffin was given the nickname 'il sergente' (the sergeant) for his no holds barred approach. His fierce tenacity and determination to win the ball would sometimes come back to haunt him, as he is noted to have one of the worst disciplinary records in football history, attaining over 150 yellow cards and over 20 red cards. In his prime, Buffin was often regarded as the best defensive midfielder in the world, and is still considered one of the finest of his generation, and arguably all time. The nature of Buffin's style, meant his exploits often went under the radar, and his efforts often went unrecognised. David would often be labelled as "underrated". Comparisons

Buffin is very often compared to Gennaro Gattuso. Both players are Italian internationals and Milan legends with long lengths of service (Buffin - 14 seasons, Gattuso - 13 seasons) and success at both club and international level. Both players play in the same position and also have near identical playing styles - tough, strong, aggressive and tenacious. Although Buffin is regarded to be more technically gifted. There is a strong debate between AC Milan fans as to who is the clubs greatest defensive midfielder, however Buffin is often seen by many as the better of the two due to his versatility, and a greater individual and team resume.

Personal Life

Gladesville Galacticos

Buffin is part of the universally lauded Gladesville Galacticos golden generation. This group of 20 players were a large social group of friends, colleagues, teammates and classmates. Initially this group would play futsal together, and after being spotted by a scout from amateur side Gladesville Ryde Magic, all 20 players were invited for a trial and subsequently signed. All 20 players would remain at the club for the next three years - establishing themselves as the most dominant amateur side in Australian football history. The Gladesville Galacticos would also impress in pre-season friendlies against A-League opposition, sparking wide interest. Ultimately the twenty players would be divided by four A-League clubs: Sydney FC (9 players), Newcastle Jets (4 players), Central Coast Mariners (4 players), and the Western Sydney Wanderers (3 players).

All these members would remain at their respective A-League clubs for the full three years of their contract. Then, in one of the most unbelievable transfer moves in history, AC Milan swooped in and signed all twenty players for a combined fee of £20,000,000 in an effort to rejuvenate their youth ranks. This unprecedented move garnered worldwide interest from the sporting world, and thrust a bunch on youngsters into the limelight before even arriving in Europe. Upon their arrival in Milan, they would all live together in a multi-million dollar bachelor pad, though many of these players would be loaned out. Nonetheless, this move was hugely successful as 17 of the 20 members would play at least one competitive fixture for AC Milan, and all would remain in the game professionally, while winning several domestic and continental titles.

The Ketch

Buffin owns his own YouTube channel with over a million subscribers under the alter ego pseudonym of 'The Ketch'. The channel primarily consists of EA Sports FIFA gameplay and commentary. Initially, Buffin would try to keep his YouTube channel a secret, wearing a mask when playing with a face cam, adding to the mystery of who The Ketch was. It was not until a live eSports FIFA event, where David's mask would fall off revealing his indentity.

Charity

Buffin is one of the few diabetic professional footballers. He has used his platform to promote awareness and raise funding for the cause. Buffin would soon become the president of Not-for-profit organisation, Diabetes Australia, where he also donates a portion of his salary to the organisation.

Controversies

Burnt Risotto: At the conclusion of the 2024/25 season, David and his brother Julian would participate in a live cooking show in Milan. The pair would attempt to cook a risotto dish in the contest. However, Julian would have a headache and provided minimal assistance to David, resulting in the risotto being burnt. What ensued was one of the most remarkable meltdowns on live television history, as David was in hysterics shouting at Julian blaming him for the risotto being burnt, and leaving the live studio audience in shock. The footage made its way around the internet and sparked a viral meme frenzy - with the original footage receiving over 50 million views on YouTube. Weeks later, AC Milan would play their first away match of the preseason against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Some sections of the home fans would throw risotto on the pitch as the match started in an attempt to mock David.

Ballon d'Or Ceremony Snooze: Buffin would attend the 2025 Ballon d'Or Ceremony, as long time friend and teammate Aaron Leone won his first Ballon d'Or. However, Buffin would attract lots of the headlines as he fell, and remained asleep during the ceremony. At the conclusion of the ceremony, no one would notify David, and he was pictured completely by himself asleep on his seat with all the lights off. This picture would subsequently go viral on social media, becoming a meme and receiving the photoshop treatment. Buffin allegedly woke up at 4am, and was unable to get out as all the doors were locked. He was also unable to call security as Christopher Chalon took his phone. It was not until 7am when he was found by security, and he was then free to leave.

Incident with Cagliari Fans: After AC Milan blew the Serie A title on the final day in the 2025/26 season away to Cagliari, causing mockery from the Cagliari fans, they would meet again the following season. In a physical affair, Milan would achieve no vengeance as they were defeated once again. Buffin was spotted having a fiery verbal and physical altercation with Cagliari fans due to being taunted as he left the stadium. (Comment on incident). Buffin was warned and fined a weeks wages by AC Milan - but no formal disciplinary action was undertaken.

David Loses the Plot: On the 9th of December 2029, AC Milan found themselves down 1-0 at home to Atalanta. As Milan pushed for an equaliser, the proceeding would gradually get more heated. Ultimately, David would snap, lunging in with two feet against Mattia Siciliano, sparking an angry response from the Atalanta players. Buffin would then spectacularly headbutt Fabian Araya when confronted and then throw Presnel Kimpembe to the ground. He was then quickly restrained by four Milan players. Things were threatening to escalate further into total anarachy as Atalanta players were still attempting to retaliate against Buffin, and Atalanta's 60-year old manager Eduardo Berizzo among other staff members stormed onto the pitch. Buffin's teammates attempted to restrain the angry Atalanta players and staff as they escorted Buffin off the pitch. The lengthy delay resulted in nine minutes of injury time being played. Buffin was surprisingly given only a five-match ban, and was fined €75,000 (AU$120,000).

Conflict with AC Milan Youth Player Towards the end of the 2034/35 season, tensions were high at Milan following one of the club's worst ever seasons. This misery was only further compounded as they were defeated 5-0 by Tottenham in the second leg of the Europa League semi final after leading 2-0, and then defeated 3-0 against Inter Milan. There were also reports of internal conflict within the club, so it was not a good look for the club when reports emerged that Buffin had an altercation with a then Milan youth player, Giacinto Carducci. Buffin allegedly was in the gym on the lat pull down, where Carducci would lecture Buffin on his poor form and alleged he was ego lifting, stating "it's not what you lift, it's how you lift". Buffin, a 35-year old Milan veteran at the time, took offense to being lectured by a then 19-year old Milan youth player with no senior-team experience. Buffin aggressively retorted to the youngster causing a fiery verbal altercation where the pair had to be split. (Thoughts on incident - deny or acknowledge). AC Milan launched an investigation but no formal action was taken. The pair would not have to deal with each other much longer, as Carducci was released at the end of the season when his contract expired. He currently plays for Serie C side FeralpiSalò.
