Chofu is a suburban city in the Tama area of eastern Tokyo.
Chofu is a residential quarter close to the Tokyo city center. The Tamagawa river flows along the southern side marking the border with Kanagawa prefecture. The Koshukaido (national highway 20) and the Chuo expressway link with downtown Tokyo. [[Shinjuku is 20 minutes away by rail and there are also many bus routes.
The city marked its 50th anniversary in 2005.

Place name origin[edit]
The name Chofu is derived from having supplied the cloth. Because of that in the past other than this area there were some “Chofu” place names inside capital. As for rural Chofu as for the origin Jinbara Gun Chofu village (east Chofu Cho after) was, Nishitama Gun Chofu village (present Oume mayor Fuchi area) there was Chofu of the Koizumi Yakumo snow woman. Koshukaido National highway 20 crosses the city. The sidewalk is narrow.
