Church is a studio album by rapper Billy Woods. It was released through Backwoodz Studioz on September 30, 2022.
Background and themes[edit]
Church was released as a surprise album on September 30, 2022.[1] It has been described as "an exploration of memory, faith, marijuana, and fate, as well as the price of love and the cost of doing business".[2] Woods has stated that the album is inspired by his experiences between the years of 1997 and 2004.[3]
The album title of Church is a reference to a marijuana strain by that name.[3]
Critical reception[edit]
Gabriel Bras Nevares, reviewing the album for HotNewHipHop, described it as "hit[ting] all the abstract hip-hop notes you'd expect". He goes on to characterize Woods as using "strung out and disjointed" lyrics defined by "craftsmanship and narrative detail" on the album.[4] Tom Breihan, writing for Stereogum, described Woods as employing "dense, brutalist lyricism".[1]
Messiah Musik's production on the album has been described as having a "clanking style"[1] characterized by the "atmospheric use of samples, soundscapes, and off-beat drums".[4]
