The Lancaster Musical Road, briefly the Civic Musical Road, and also known locally as the Lone Ranger Road, and William Tell Road, is a quarter-mile stretch of road in Lancaster, California. It is the first musical road in the United States, though there is the Anyang Singing Road in South Korea, an Aspaltophone in Denmark, and a number of melody roads in Japan. It was built on September 5, 2008 on Avenue K, between 62nd Street West and 70th Street West, for a Honda Civic commercial. The road has grooves cut into the asphalt at different intervals, resulting in the William Tell Overture being heard when a vehicle drives over them. After the Lancaster City Council received noise complaints from nearby residents it was paved over at the end of September. On October 17, 2008, the Musical Road was rebuilt on Avenue G, two miles from any residents, and close to the General William J. Fox Airfield.
