How many Articles for Deletion (AfD) debates do you need to delete an article? One? Two? Or more?
Currently, the article with the dubious honour of undergoing the most number of AfDs is Gay Nigger Association of America (GNAA), with a total of 18 nominations. Essentially this article is about a troll organisation, and perhaps it is because of this fact that it does not come as a surprise to some old Wikipedians.
The article was nominated for so many times for deletion that it became a running gag between Wikipedians to see it on AfD. A pool at one point of time was even set up for Wikipedians to guess when the 10th GNAA would occur. Ironically, the winning date was on 2006 April Fools's. It was also nominated for featured article, and three peer reviews: 1, 2, and 3.
GNAA was finally deleted on November 2006, its 18th nomination with the invokation of unverifiability and denying recognition (which both ideas have seen growing prominence recently) by the closing admin Tawker. Its deletion was subsequently endorsed two weeks later, including Jimbo on the mailing list. Re-creation appears to remain an option, but subject to the condition that reliable sources are provided.
This timeline serves as a reminder to editors (especially the older generation) that editorial decisions and general opinion can change significantly over time. Something that may be taken for granted at this period of time, might just be gone in the blink of an eye.
