Terre Haute Lodge No. 19, F&AM (Chartered September 13, 1821) is a lodge of Freemasons in Terre Haute, Indiana. It is the oldest existing organization in the city and in Vigo County.[1] [2]

History[edit]

On March 10, 1819, thirteen Freemasons residing in the village of Terre Haute petitioned the recently formed Grand Lodge of Indiana for dispensation to establish a lodge. Grand Lodge complied and said dispensation was received on July 12, 1819. The officers were installed by Elihu Stout of Vincennes Lodge No. 1, and the first organization in Vigo County began its labors. [3] The Lodge worked under this dispensation until a charter was issued by Grand Lodge on September 13, 1821.

As an organization, only Vigo County and its government is older. The village of Terre Haute only incorporated in 1832, and didn't become a city until 1853. The first newspaper wasn't printed until 1823; the earliest church congregation didn't organize until 1822; and the first bank wasn't chartered until 1834. [4]

Terre Haute Lodge No. 19 remained an active part of the community in those early years. It did not, however, escape the effects of the anti-Masonry hysteria of the 1830s. Lodge records are incomplete for this period, and some detractors claim that the Lodge held its last meeting on November 22, 1833, before having its charter arrested in 1835. [5] Personal accounts refer to the lodge meeting “sub rosa” in the homes and businesses of its members during this decade. Further, the Lodge did not surrender its charter [6] and this treasured document remains in use by the Lodge to this day.

Following the dark period of the 1830s, the Lodge experienced a revival beginning in 1845 and continued for well over a century. At its peak, Terre Haute Lodge No. 19 boasted roughly 1800 members [7] and was directly or indirectly responsible for the chartering of the county’s 10 other Masonic lodges.
