The saying, "A dog is a man's best friend" is common, however, a guide dog is a person's eyes that gives them the freedom to walk freely. Puppies are trained from birth to become loyal, compassionate, and loving guide dogs, so that their owner can learn to gain confidence in the outside world.[1]

Guide Dogs[edit]

Guide Dogs are "dogs that are trained to lead the blind."[2] The dog breed that is used as a guide dog is the Labrador Retriever. This process is a two way compromise, with the owner releasing the command, and the guide dog obeying and following the command. A guide dog is trained to sit at steps and curbs, stop at low trees and objects, and stay still until the vehicle has passed. http://https://www.guidedogs.org.uk/services-we-provide/guide-dogs/what-a-guide-dog-does/. {{cite web}}: Check |url= value (help); Cite has empty unknown parameter: |1= (help); Missing or empty |title= (help)</ref> Guide dogs are able to enter in almost every facility, as they are the person's eyes. Guide dogs are learned not to bark and to stay calm around other humans and dogs.

Process[edit]

Guide dogs start their training when they are six months old. The main requirements of applying to receive a guide dog is that the person has to be seventeen or older, legally blind, and living in Texas. http://guidedogsoftexas.org/what-we-do/client-care/how-to-apply-for-a-guide-dog-2//. {{cite web}}: Cite has empty unknown parameter: |1= (help); Missing or empty |title= (help)</ref> The trainers come for five to six weeks to the city in which the owner resides to train the owner and the dog. During this process, the trainer learns the commands, and the dog learns the different routes. During this training, the owner learns how the dog is supposed to act inside and outside the home. Guide dogs are trained on cookies and treats and after doing a good deed, they like to be rewarded.
