Finnick Odair is a fictional character from Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games trilogy. Actor Sam Claflin will be portraying him in the movie The Hunger Games: Catching Fire directed by Francis Lawrence, which will be released in November 22, 2013.[1]

History[edit]

Being a tribute and mentor from District 4, a career district with the industry of fishing, he was known for winning the 65th Hunger Games at the age 14 and was later one of the survivors of the 3rd Quarter Quell. He was the husband of Annie Cresta and father of their son.[2]

Finnick won the 65th Hunger Games at the age of 14, where he was mentored by previous District 4 victor, Mags. During the 65th Hunger Games he was given a trident, which was probably the most expensive gift ever given in the Games. The trident was a weapon which he wielded with proficiency and with the help of a net he wove by hand from some vines he found in the arena, he managed to trap his opponents in his net and then slay them with his trident. During the 74th Hunger Games he served as the mentor alongside Mags for District 4, as revealed in Mockingjay when he becomes the expert on Peeta's memories of his two times in the arena. He participated in the 3rd Quarter Quell a year later, and became part of an alliance with Peeta Mellark, Katniss Everdeen, Wiress, Beetee, Johanna Mason and previous mentor Mags.[3]

In the books[edit]

Catching Fire[edit]

Finnick gets reaped in the 3rd Quarter Quell along with his mentor Mags from District 4. He then starts his games with killing the District 5 male and becoming allies with Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark.[4] At first, Katniss tries to kill him while hiking a mountain in the arena, but she was unable to do it because Peeta was between them. After Peeta hits a force field and his heart stops, Finnick uses CPR to rescue him. Katniss was then grateful for not killing him. After being allies with Beetee, Wiress, and Johanna Mason, they stay on the beach near the Conucopia. After several days, Beetee forms a plan of electouring other tributes during the storm hour using his wire he got at the Cornucopia. Then they were rescued from the arena after Brutus and Enobaria brake the plan by cutting the wire.[5]

Mockingjay[edit]

After being rescued from the 3rd Quarter Quell and tooken to District 13, Finnick gets mentally disordered and occupied by the fact that the Capitol is torturing his lover, Annie Cresta. Later, he marries her after a team rescued her, Johanna Mason, and Peeta.[6] and gets a newborn son. Finnick then joins Squad 451 whose members are Katniss, Peeta, Gale Hawthorne, Homes, Jackson, Leeg 1 & 2, Boggs, and Mitchell. He is later killed on his mission to President Snow's mansion after being eaten by human-like reptiles specially described as having white skin and large sharp claws and teeth.[7]

Characterization[edit]

Backround[edit]

Finnick lives in a future country called Panem, which is located in North America. He comes from District 4, a coastal and career district specialized in fishing. Katniss says the people of this district are the most decent-looking. He is well-known for winning a previous Hunger Games at a pretty young age and surviving the 3rd Quarter Quell until he was rescued from the arena along with Beetee and Katniss. He then marries Annie Cresta and gets a newborn son in District 13, and underground district which was obliterated before the Hunger Games after it started a rebellion. He is later decapitated by mutts from the Capitol specially designed to kill Katniss.

Physical Appearance[edit]

Physically, he is described as being extremely handsome. He is tall, muscular, and athletic. Finnick's capitol portrait with tan skin, bronze-colored hair, and "incredible" sea green eyes, making him very popular in the Capitol. He has many women who love him in the Captiol. Katniss says that Finnick never needed to do anything for sponsors, and that no other tribute could overcome his "natural beauty."[8]
