Location of Egg Harbor in Wisconsin
One of the amazing beaches in Egg Harbor

Location[edit]

Egg Harbor is a small and beautiful town on a bay branching off from Lake Michigan, with its location being on the far east side of Wisconsin. Its exact location is 45°2′57″N 87°17′51″W. It is a small drive away from Sturgeon Bay, Jackson Port, and Baileys Harbor and others, so there are many cities and towns to visit nearby if you want to go exploring there. There are also more close places to visit like, the Cana Island Lighthouse, only a short 30-minute drive from town. A unique feature of it is it's only accessible from a rocky path with the lake on either side of it, so you get to walk across. Or, if the water level is too high, you can take the trip across on a wagon pulled by a tractor, bumpy, but exciting.

Place and History[edit]

Egg Harbor is home to 252 people and is a work place for many of them. The large amount of businesses there are family owned because there aren't any super large corporations or companies there, so people created their own. There is a wide variety of shops from pottery, to woodcarving, to restaurants. A good place to visit for food, is Wilson's Restaurant and Ice Cream Parlor, and it's on the main street of Egg Harbor, a 20-minute drive max from anywhere in town. Then after getting a fun meal you can explore around and see all the stores that are only located in Egg Harbor.

Egg Harbor was founded on July 9, 1861, by Jacob and Levi Throp, who purchased the land and began construction on many buildings, mostly created around a lumber business, but also made things like a dock to park their boats. So, over time many other people also helped create the Egg Harbor that is known today, even using buildings that were created for the lumber business. The name Egg Harbor isn't fully known but, the towns folk like to say it originated when a group of fur traders were going to stop there for the night and decided to race there. When one of the boats had the lead, food started to be thrown at it by the other racers, first hardtack, then once they ran out, the eggs started flying. Even when the ships were beached, the traders continued the "battle" until they eventually ran out of egg to throw. That is how the townsfolk of Egg Harbor say it was named.

Scale and Distribution[edit]

Egg Harbor isn't a super large town, only 6.62 square miles, so traveling around the town doesn't take very long, usually around 20 minutes to get from one side to the other. It is also helpful that there is a main street, with a lot of the larger stores and shops, so if you don't have one in mind, you can explore around that area. There are also many people who run shops around or connected to their houses, they are a little harder to find but a lot of them are advertised not only online, but also occasionally flyers around the town. So if you want a large close variety of stores, go to the main street, otherwise you can explore around the countryside and find more shops there.

Pattern and Region[edit]

There aren't many large corporations as specified above, so Egg Harbor is more friendly for any shape, size, or colored buildings. The roads are easy to navigate because they are smaller roads branching off of a larger one, so many of the stores and restaurants are usually on Main Street. With no limit of different types of stores, many things are created, farmed, developed and sold in Egg Harbor, so have fun exploring around to find things you need, and maybe some things you weren't looking for. Lots of the roads are not paved because they stretch out for miles, so it would cost a lot to pave them. The town has a fairly large amount of tourism for its size, with its beaches and golf courses open to the public it can draw in many people from the countryside. Farmer markets also bring people from the surrounding area to buy and sell goods, increasing the number of tourists from more local areas. There are many towns and cities similar to Egg Harbor in many ways, like the beaches on or near Lake Michigan, the farmers markets in the fall, and lots of nature. But it's one of the few towns or cities right on the beach of Lake Michigan, or at least a bay connected to it, in the Door County area. So it is similar to many towns, but has its own unique aspects as well.

Site[edit]

Egg Harbor is made up of mostly farmland with more homes and businesses in one specific area. Yet, even with the farms taking up a lot of the countryside, there is still so much land that is more wilderness with lots of animals calling the place their home. Not much of the area is forest, more plains, grassland and wetland, but there are still many animals that live in the surrounding area. More than 300 species of birds live in Egg Harbor, as well as many mammals including white tail deer, red and gray squirrels, chipmunks, badgers and many more. Egg Harbors weather is a big factor of the population of wildlife, similar to many places in Wisconsin, is warm in the summer and snowy and cold in the winter. The weather averages for the area are around the 60s in September, into around the 20s in December, with cloudy weather very common.

Situation[edit]

Egg Harbor is a town in Door County, Wisconsin, along with cities like Sturgeon Bay, Jackson-port, Baileys Harbor and others. It is connected to other towns with roads surrounded by farmland and nature, so even if the short drive feels long, there is plenty of nature to view along the way. It isn't the largest town but is big enough with plenty of open land between other locations, perfect for the large amounts of farmland around it.
