Słowacki on his deathbed by PD

Charles Pétiniaud-Dubos (1822- 15 March 1906) - French painter and friend of Juliusz Słowacki. He stayed with the poet in his last days, became the executioner of his last will and designed his grave. He drew a sketch of Słowacki on his deathbed, now in Warsaw National Museum collections.[1]

In 1844 he has decorated the interiors of the cathedral in Limoges. He was associated with Salon des Independants[2] and Société des artistes indépendants[3]. He took place in 21st Salon des Independants in 1905, showing off the works: Paysage, Asile de nuit, Vieux souvenirs, Paysage, Barderage, A Lesbos, Le Barbichet, and Coiffure limousine a la fete de l'egantine a Uzerche[4][5]. In catalog he is credited as living in 67, rue Rochechouart in Paris and 60, rue du Chinchauvaud in Limoges[4].

The fact that he was named the executioner has been noted by Norwid[6] and last letter of Słowacki[7] as the third edition of the last will. Described as a "strong brunette of mid-height", Petiniaud was a help to sick Słowacki. The relationship sparks interest in modern queer studies researchers, who note that Słowacki has had only brief "infatuations" with women and claim that the poet could have been gay[8]. In 1906 Władysław Strzembosz, looking for Słowacki's remnants, found that Petiniaud published 7 paintings at exhibition of SDAI. He came too late to visit the painter, who already died 15 March and had his estate sold and money committed to the hospice in the hometown of Limoges[9].
