Breaker Bar[edit]

A breaker bar (also known as a power bar) is a long non-ratcheting bar that is used with socket wrench-style sockets. They are used to break loose very tight fasteners because their additional length allows the same amount of force to generate significantly more torque than a standard length socket wrench.[1] Their use prevents damage to the ratcheting mechanism of a socket wrench. Often, after the first half turn, the fastener is loose enough to be turned with a socket wrench.

Applications[edit]

The place where you can find this tool being used is construction sites and also jobs that require heavy duty equipment. A breaker bar is just like a wrench, It has an end to it that you can add many different adjustments and fittings to it. The most common attachment is a 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch socket. There are different kinds of "breaker bars", some are bent, some are specifically made for certain pieces of equipment, and also some are different thicknesses as well. The main part of this tool is for applying torque.

Function[edit]

The function of this tool is to break stubborn bolts that have been rusted for years and you need them to come off. The point of this tool is used for leverage. The longer tool is the greater function out of the tool you will get. People use this tool in many different ways. The most common use for this tool is breaking hard fastened bolts. Other ways this tool can be used is that it can be used for picking up heavy material. For example, when changing a tire you can use a breaker bar to lift the tire up just enough to slide the threads through the hole of the tire.


Design Flaws[edit]

For everything in the world there is always a flaw for something. This tool is such a great tool to have in your collection. A torque wrench is very efficient to tighten nuts and bolts. As it ensures a certain amount of force to tighten, you can provide the right amount of torque. As the breaker bars do not have any measurement system, often you might have to end up over-tightening the bolts which can damage your machine.[2] The flaws of this tool would have to be the thickness of the tool and the material of the tool. The stronger the tool and the longer the tool is, the greater success you will get with the tool. With the tool being short and not thick the tool has a likely to break and hurt and injury the human.

With everything in the world, everything tool comes with a price. If you want a higher quality tool, just be prepared to pay a premium price. The more you pay for a tool, you get a better quality and long lasting tool for life. Most companies like Husky, Mac, Craftsman offer life time warranty's so when the tool breaks, you can return the tool to the manufacturer and they will give you a brand new one on the spot.
