When the war began he became an aide-de-camp to Texas governor Edward Clark. Later he served as a major in the 2nd Texas Infantry.[1] He was elected commander of Debray's Texas Cavalry battalion.[1] He lead the 26th Texas Cavalry during the Red River Campaign and was appointed Brigadier General by Kirby Smith for his service in that campaign.
