Eximius is an upcoming first-person strategy game that focuses on squad-based combat. This genre of game is sometimes known as FPS / RTS hybrid because it combines both the first-person shooter (FPS ) gameplay and real-time strategy (RTS ) gameplay. Eximius is a first debut project for the developer Ammobox Studios which is an indie games company which is based in Malaysia.

Introduction[edit]

Eximius combines tactical First Person Shooter (FPS) gameplay with high level strategic decision making of a Real-time Strategy (RTS) game. The game features a competitive 5 versus 5 team battles where players square off in a post apocalyptic urban environment.

Gameplay[edit]

Although Eximius is fundamentally an FPS game, the gameplay is vastly different from a usual FPS. The typical gameplay in Eximius revolves around team battles which consists of both Player-led NPC squads battling enemy squads ( which similarly consist of player and NPC infantries ). With each team sharing bases, players work together to defend their base when needed and assault enemy base.

A big portion of the game forces the player to capture territories and hold them; providing resources for the team that will in turn allow the creation of more gameplay units which consists of infantries , armored vehicles , structures and even aircraft. The game claims to combine both high level strategy and tactical precision in winning battle engagements. This translates to player trying to win the game not only with better shooting skills but with better teamwork , planning and having the right combination of squad.

Commander Gameplay ( RTS )[edit]

Each team has a commander that will be pre-selected before the match. The commander has a distinct feature which is the ability to switch to a top-down view of the world; allowing for a typical real-time strategy (RTS) gameplay. Commander will perform the role of managing base, production of gameplay units and the usage of commander abilities ( such as airstrikes, reinforcements , etc ).A team commander's primary role is to support the ground troops and to plan troop movements and attack plans. Commander also has full control of the team's vehicle units.

Officer Gameplay ( FPS )[edit]

By default , every player is an officer. The commander is also an officer , except with an ability to switch to a top-down view of the world. Officer players lead their infantry squad into combat to capture resources; providing the team with more strategic capabilities. An officer can purchase and upgrade weapon loadouts via armory ( which is a structure that is build-able by the commander ). These armories, when placed in strategic location can often turn the tide of battle due to their unique ability that allow players to heal and refill ammunition.

By default, an officer generally has higher stats comparing to standard infantry units. Apart from higher hitpoints , they also have regenerative shields similar to modern FPS-es such as Halo and Payday. Players have regenerative shield but not regenerative health.

While the game is primarily focused on Player vs Player multiplayer experience, developer promises that purely co-op game modes(PvE) will be launched as part of the game in later stages as episodic missions to explore the rich lore of the game.

Objectives[edit]

The objective of the gameplay is to win by holding down the most victory points. Alternatively, if your forces are powerful enough, you can completely destroy your enemy’s base and win the match immediately. The command headquarters cannot be rebuilt and the game will be instantly over.

Key Features[edit]

Seamless Transition[edit]

As a commander you are also an officer, but you have the extra capability to switch to top down RTS interface to build bases and command units. An aggressive commander can also join the battle in the frontlines but they are normally expected to stay in relative safety and manage base development.

Base Building[edit]

[[|thumb| The commander handles base building and unit production. ]] As the gameplay of Eximius revolves around team versus team battles, each team shares a base as well as resources and technology tree. RTS Commander can support the battle operations by training infantry units and vehicles, building bases and calling in airstrikes or support abilities.

Train Armies[edit]

A Commander can train AI infantry and assign them to players. Leading them as a frontline officer; your squad will fight with you sensibly, taking cover and help you both offensively and defensively.

Tactical Battles[edit]

Weapons and equipment determine combat roles in the team. Certain strategy from commander requires players to re-act accordingly by changing their loadout or utilizing a different gameplay units. Positioning plays an important role in the game as well.

Unlock Technologies[edit]

As resources and technology grow, players can construct increasingly powerful units such as armored vehicles, gunships and elite soldiers. Teams can gain powerful commander abilities when they tech up to new tiers. Some demonstrated ability include artillery strikes , aerial bombardments and air-dropped reinforcements.

Battlesuits[edit]

The pinnacle of each team’s firepower is the legendary battle-suit. Equipping battlesuits allow players to use powerful abilities, have increased stats and is able to push the frontlines much faster. Officers will have choice of several choice of battlesuits, each with their own play style and set of abilities.

Story[edit]

The World[edit]

Eximius takes place in a post-apocalyptic world set in a near-future. Surviving nations exist behind large fortified walls as an evolved human kind known as ‘Homo-Eximius’ ravages through the world. Two competing organisation known as Global Security Force (GSF) and the Axeron Corporation (AXR) is tasked to defend the walls against the mutant threat, extract lost resources and reclaim abandoned cities for their funding nations. For a decade, the two factions grew apart in territorial dispute and eventually fall into a full armed conflict. Players play as one of the faction and must fight the other faction.

Factions[edit]

The game will feature 2 different factions at launch. They differ in gameplay styles, aesthetics and technology.

Global Security Force (GSF)[edit]

A peacekeeping organization set up after the first initial great war; the GSF foundation is built upon the principles of securing the walls, recovering human survivors and rebuilding the civilized world. They command the largest military force in the world and operates on a near limitless budget. Nations that choose to fund GSF do so for their vast armies and their global presence.

Axeron Corporation (AXR)[edit]

AXR is private research organisation that turned into a security contractor out of global needs. Being at the forefront of science, many believes that this wealthy organisation holds key technologies that could bring about global peace. With limited manpower, the Axeron industrial complex produces highly advanced drones for their workforce , both for military and nonmilitary use. This elusive organization operates in an extremely organized and stealthy manner. Nations that choose to fund AXR do so for their advanced scientific capability and confidence that they will be the solution to the growing mutant threat.

Development[edit]

Eximius was previously developed on Unreal Development Kit ( UDK ) back in 2011 when the developer first debut the game with the working title 'Project Combine'. Eximius was then re-branded and relaunched in 2016 when it was first debut in Steam Greenlight. The game was approved within 9 days.

The game was subsequently showcased on Game Developer's Conference and PAX East in 2017.
