The character made her final appearance on 3 April when she was killed after revealing her true identity to her mother Ronnie Mitchell (Samantha Womack), marking the conclusion to eight-month long storyline.[3] Following a return to the series in December 2008, John Altman quit his role as Nick Cotton and the character departed at the conclusion to his storyline.[4] Carmel Cryan made her final appearance as Brenda Boyle on 14 August.[5] Kara Tointon, Ricky Groves and twins, Isabella and Rebecca Hegarty were axed from the series when producers chose not to renew their contracts;[6] they made their final appearance on 27 August.[7] Larry Lamb departed his role as villain Archie Mitchell on 10 April at the conclusion of his storyline. It was announced that Lamb would return four days later; Archie returned on 9 July.[8] However, it was announced Lamb would return for one storyline and would depart at its conclusion.[9] The character was killed-off in a 'whodunit' storyline, entitled "Who Killed Archie?" and made his final appearance, as a corpse, on 28 December.[9] Jo Joyner announced her pregnancy in July 2009; her character Tanya Branning departed the series on 25 December when she walked out on her husband.[10]

Both characters departed the series on 9 October, but returned for four episodes between 7 and 11 December.[13] Lucas Johnson's (Don Gilet) estranged wife, Trina Johnson (Sharon Duncan Brewster), was introduced on 23 February; she made her final appearance when she was killed-off on 4 September.[14] Comedian Josie Lawrence made her first appearance as a love interest for Minty Peterson (Cliff Parisi), Manda Best, on 6 March.[15] Manda's son, Adam Best, joined the series on 10 September. Marc Elliott was cast in the role.[17] Syed's girlfriend, Amira Shah, was introduced on 7 May. Preeya Kalidas was cast in the role.[18] Amira's father, Qadim Shah (Ramon Tikaram), made his first appearance on 17 December as part of a five-episode guest stint.[19] Neil McDermott made his first appearance on 28 April. The character was later revealed to be Ryan Malloy, the half-brother of Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty).[20] Adam Croasdell was cast as the show's resident general practitioner, Al Jenkins; the character made his first appearance on 1 May.[21] Cavan Clerkin's casting in the role as Ronnie Mitchell's first love and father of Danielle Jones, Joel Reynolds, was announced on 23 July 2009; the character made his first appearance on 6 August.[22] Tameka Empson and Robbie Gee guest appeared in the series between 24 and 27 November as Denise Fox's (Diane Parish) sister Kim Fox and her boyfriend Dexter Mulholland.[23] Simone James joined the cast as Becca Swanson on 7 December, as a friend Stacey Branning (Lacey Turner) meets in a psychiatric hospital.[24]

Sam Mitchell's reintroduction was announced on 7 April 2009, with Danniella Westbrook returning to the role instead of Kim Medcalf, who previously played the character.[25] Sam returned on 4 September.[26] Lee Ross and Kate Williams reprised their roles as Libby Fox's (Belinda Owusu) father, Owen Turner, and gradmother, Liz Turner, following their 2006 departures. They returned in October.[27] Ross' character was axed from the series to aid the storyline of Lucas Johnson being a serial killer. Owen made his final appearance on 26 November.[28] Chris Coghill returned to the series for five episodes between 7 and 18 December for his character Tony King to stand trial for the sexual abuse of Whitney Dean.[29] Sophie Stanton's return to her role as DCI Jill Marsden, following a six year absence, was announced on 10 November 2009; she returned on 28 December for the "Who Killed Archie?" storyline.[30]

This episode saw a revamp of the opening titles, with a new three-dimensional coloured map, with a boat on the river and moving clouds, and the logo fading in at the end instead of scrolling up. The theme tune was also rescored, with stronger drum beats, various percussion instruments in the background, and the whistle at the end being more pronounced. This was the first time the title sequence had been changed since September 1999.[40][41]
