Elphinstone Reef[edit]
Elphinstone reef is one of Read Sea's best dive sites. Located just north of Marsa Alam, this giant pillar is 300 meters long and starts from a depth of 100 meters. From the north it has its first platue at 65 meeters depth, the next is at 48 meeters and just a bit more south we have the first bigger platue containing lots of corals. The main part of the reef, about 80 meeters is just below the surface. The south part has a slope starting at around 20 meeters reaching a depth of about 30 meeters. At a depth of 60 meeters in the south part of the reef there is a big cave.
Diversified Fauna[edit]
Elphinstones unique shape makes this dive site one of the most interresting in all of the Read Sea. The warm water that is pushed up from the currents brings lots of plangton to the shalower waters making Elphinstone full of life. Elphinstone is home to Barracudas, angel fish, groupers, morays, large shools of tuna, even hammerheads, tigersharks, whitetip and grey reef shark, have been spotted at Elphinstone.
Divesite info[edit]
You need a boat to get to Elphinstone as it is about 20 km off Marsa Alam's coast. This site should only be visited by experienced divers as the currents sometimes can be very strong.
