Nintendo Switch Online, a subscription service for the Nintendo Switch, launched in 2018

Starting in September 2018, Nintendo began distributing retro games on the Nintendo Switch through its subscription service, Nintendo Switch Online.[1] The games utilize emulation,[2] and most add options to rewind gameplay or create save states.[3] Games also allow for online multiplayer.[4] At launch, the service offered 20 games originally released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).[5] In September 2019, 20 games for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) were added to the service.[6] The same month, Nintendo announced that new games would no longer be added to the NES and SNES libraries on a monthly basis, as they had been for the past year.[7]
