David C. Glass

David C. Glass is Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Stony Brook University. He received his Ph.D. from New York University in 1959, and did three years of postdoctoral work in experimental social psychology and psychophysiology at the same institution. He was Social Psychologist at Russell Sage Foundation from 1963 to 1971, where he was responsible for program development in biology and social behavior. Dr. Glass taught and conducted research at several universities including Rockefeller University, New York University, Stony Brook University, and the University of Texas at Austin. He was Chairman of Psychology at Texas from 1972 to 1975, and in 1977 became Professor of Psychology at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.

Dr. Glass has published over 100 papers, chapters, and reviews in professional journals and books, including his 2011 article on bipolar disorder and Type A behavior.[1] Most of his contributions to psychological science are summarized in the Encyclopedia of Health Psychology. [2] He is senior co-author of a book introducing the concept of stress aftereffects and their impact on behavior and performance. [3] The book won the Socio-Psychological Prize for 1971 from the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is editor of a three volume series on biology and behavior that stimulated systematic efforts to integrate biological and psychosocial perspectives on behavior and health. [4,5,6] In 1975, he was invited to be Visiting Scholar at Russell Sage Foundation, where he wrote a widely cited monograph based on empirical research linking stress, facets of Type A behavior and coronary disease. [7] Dr. Glass received the American Psychological Association (Division 38) award for Outstanding Contribution to Health Psychology in 1988.

Dr. Glass is past President of the Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research, and a fellow of several professional societies, including the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is one of the founders of the field of Behavioral Medicine and continues as an active researcher in health psychology. He has trained over 25 doctoral and postdoctoral students, many of whom are now distinguished researchers in their respective specialties.

Dr. Glass served as Professor, Vice Provost for Research and Dean of Graduate Studies at Stony Brook University from 1982 to 1985. In 1987, he was appointed Special Advisor to the Provost, and later became the first incumbent of a reorganized position - - Vice Provost (later Vice President) for Research. He occupied this post until September 1993. In 1997 and 1998, Dr. Glass served as Director of Research at the Kessler Medical Rehabilitation Research and Education Corporation in New Jersey.
