Using his patented tunnelling shield, Marc Brunel begins construction of the Thames Tunnel under the River Thames between Wapping and Rotherhithe. Progress is slow and will be halted a number of times before the tunnel is completed.[1]

7 August: A guard is killed on a London and Birmingham Railway train near Harrow & Wealdstone after he slips when crossing between carriages and his legs are crushed under the wheels.

1 May: London and Croydon Railway and South Eastern Railway open Bricklayers Arms station as an alternative terminus to London Bridge station.
27 May: West London Railway opens between Willesden Junction and the Kensington Canal near Kensington Olympia.
14 October: A large fire destroys carriage and engineer sheds and railway works adjacent to New Cross station.
11 December: A bolier explosion on a goods train from Bricklayers Arms kills the driver and fireman and damages the timber viaduct near New Cross.

Charles Pearson proposes a shared central railway station for London located in Farringdon.[3][4]
27 February: London and Brighton Railway and London and Croydon Railway merge to form the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway.
1 July: The Royal Commission on Metropolitan Railway Termini recommends a demarcating a limit around the central area of London within which no new railway lines should be constructed.[4]
16 July: Grand Junction Railway, London and Birmingham Railway and Manchester and Birmingham Railway merge to form the London and North Western Railway.
27 July: London and South Western Railway opens line from Clapham to Richmond.

25 August: London, Chatham and Dover Railway opens its terminus at Victoria station adjacent to the London and Brighton Railway's terminus. Its line runs to Herne Hill.

26 April: A gyratory system is introduced in Trafalgar Square so that all vehicles travel clockwise around the square.
19 July: Piccadilly Circus becomes a roundabout.
3 August: The first electric traffic light in Britain is installed at Piccadilly Circus. It was manually operated by a police officer.

3 December: Post Office Railway commences operations.

7 January: The River Thames floods from Hammersmith to the City of London breaching the Thames Embankment, causing part of the Chelsea Embankment to collapse and flooding the London Underground, and the Blackwall and Rotherhithe tunnels.
9 July: A collision at London Bridge station kills two when a locomotive runs into the side of another train because of a misread signal.

2 March: A crash of a Sabena passenger plane landing in poor visibility at Heathrow Airport kills 20. Two rescuers are awarded the George Medal.

2 August: Second bore of Blackwall Tunnel opens under the River Thames between Blackwall and the Greenwich Peninsula.
5 November: Hither Green rail crash kills 49 when a broken rail derails a train near Hither Green depot.
28 November: A newspaper train derails at Raynes Park when a goods van hits a footbridge over the line. The line is blocked for two days.
1968
28 February: Following objections to the government's proposal to develop Stansted as London's third airport, the government announces a commission will review options and sites for development.
5 April: RAF fighter pilot Alan Pollock flys a Hawker Hunter jet below the upper span of Tower Bridge as part of a protest that the 50th anniversary of the founding of the RAF had not been celebrated.
8 April: A fire on a BOAC passenger plane following an emergency landing kills 5. Stewardess Barbara Jane Harrison is posthumously awarded the George Cross for heroism.
15 April: Erected in 1963 to enable the construction of the Underground station concourse below the road junction, the Oxford Circus Umbrella road deck is removed.
1 May: British Rail closes the freight only Merton Abbey line.
