Linda Sigourney

Your bot recently fixed some errors in Lydia Sigourney -- Published works. This page has been there a long time; I appreciate that-- I was unaware of the spelling errors and thought my list correct. Checked some library catalogs and the bot got it right. Just wanted to say thanks. --Matthew K 16:51, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

Bot for Mac!?!?

Hi, Commander! I was wondering about your bot CmdrObot - the page says it's a Mac program. Can you give me some more info? Is it OpenSource? How much Python do I need to know to run it? Anything more than "zero" might be a problem, though I'm proficient in Perl and PHP, so maybe I won't have too much trouble... Anyway, any help you can give would be appreciated. -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 03:07, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi there. I'm afraid my bot isn't open source, and at the moment it isn't really fit for general consumption: it's got a fairly annoying memory leak, its error handling is a bit lacking, and the user interface could most kindly be described as 'minimal'. I keep meaning to clean it up and make a proper release of it, but other things keep getting in the way. Sorry! Cmdrjameson 15:31, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
<Sigh...> Sometimes it's tough being a Mac addict :) -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 15:34, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
Well it's better than having to deal with the flaws of Windows. Maybe Wikipedia has an Article for you that helps you make bots. <lol> Aquzenn 01:47, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

Steve Andino

You placed a cleanup tag on the above article. I have now wikified (as far as possible, it needs references/citations) said article, and if you want to review it and remove (or replace with wikify template) the tag then please do. Cheers.LessHeard vanU 01:15, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for tidying it up. Cheers, Cmdrjameson 15:34, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

Greetings, fellow bot operator

I see that you are listed as a fellow bot operator. I have been regorganising the wikipedia bot help pages to try and provide more information for those who want to learn how to create a bot or have quesitons relating to how to run a bot on wikipedia (more nuts-and-bolts than the existing policy page, which deals with what you are allowed to do, not how you would go about doing it). I've made a start at Wikipedia:Creating_a_bot but could do with any feedback at all. I could do with any programming-language specific information that you can provide as well as any suggestions for improving the article. I'm leaving this same message with 5 other bot operators, to encourage them to pass on the knowledge we have learned developing our bots to the "next generation" of wikipedia bot-builders! All Music Guide

I've been on a long quest to find out allmusic.com's system for identifiers and I ran across a comment your bot made and I was hoping you would be able to help me out. Do you know of anyway of converting the ID they display for an album (for example R381637 for http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:olsqoayaiijn) to a URL that will link directly to that album every time. For example. http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&AMG_Album=R381637 or something. That is just an example and obviously doesn't work, but I'm looking for something along those lines. Thanks. EyeRmonkey 23:56, 17 December 2006 (UTC) Update: I just found that if you put a 27 before the colon in the sql variable, you can link directly to an artist. For example, the identifier for The Offspring is 26810 (P26810 actually) and if you make a URL that is http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=27:26810 you can link directly to that artists page. Now I just need to find a way to do this with albums. I tried every number between 1 and 99 behind the colon, and none of them brought me directly to an album page given only the ID. Any ideas? EyeRmonkey 01:37, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi there. I'm afraid your guess is as good as mine as regards the format of the sql variable in the AllMusic URLs. All I really know is the stuff that I mentioned on my bot's talk page. Good luck though. Cheers, Cmdrjameson 15:27, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

Thank You.

Dear Jameson, I was just checking my older pages and found that you have reverted the vandalism on the page William of Baskerville. Thank you so much. --Cyril Thomas 21:46, 25 December 2006 (UTC)

replace "often times" and "oftentimes" with "often"

Can you get your bot to include replacing all instances of "often times" and "oftentimes" with "often", please. They of course mean exactly the same thing, but the first two are not of a formal tone expected. Paul Silverman 12:35, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi Paul, that's a good idea, I'll add it to my bot in the next day or two. Cheers, Cmdrjameson 19:03, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
I see it's working. Great job! Osurak 00:28, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

Re:AntiVandalBot

I saw your message on AntiVandalBot's talk page. I am not the operator of AntiVandalBot, but I have to tell you that AVB has been broken for the past month or so, and now only edits the Wikipedia:Introduction page. However, if it comes back on I'm sure it would pick up the kind of vandalism that you mentioned. Academic Challenger 05:57, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Phycology/psycology

These are two different words sometimes confused. Phycology is the study od algae. "Phycos" is the Greek from which "Fucus" (Latin) is derived (I understand). Fucus is the generic name for certain big brown algae common on European shores.Osborne 11:23, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi Osborne, thanks for that. You learn something new every day. My bot doesn't have a rule for phycology but it does have one for phycological. Is that what you saw? (What article was it in BTW?) In any event, I'm removing the rule for phycological as I did a search over an entire enwiki dump and every use of phycological was correct. Cheers, and apologies for the confusion, Cmdrjameson 13:56, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

Unicodify

May I ask what tool are you using to unicodify pages, as in this diff? --Dmitry (talkcontibs ) 14:51, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi Dmitry. One of the functions of my bot is to turn appropriate HTML entities into UTF-8. The bot just searches the entire article for entities using a regular expression, checks each one to see if it's safe to turn it into UTF-8, and if it is, does so. The bot itself isn't open source at the moment, but I could fairly easily extract the unicodifying code if you need it. Cheers, Cmdrjameson 11:19, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

CmdrBot error

CmdrBot vandalized the Grandest Fleet page (see http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Grandest_Fleet&diff=118026646&oldid=117750294) Cocoaguy ここがいい contribstalk 16:19, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi Cocoaguy, I think you'll find that my bot's edit was the following legitimate spelling correction. Cheers, Cmdrjameson 12:09, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

another bot error

Over on Conversion of units, the bot converted cental (a unit name) to central, which isn't the same thing at all. Rhialto 03:29, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks Rhialto, I'll make a note of it so it doesn't happen again. Cheers, Cmdrjameson 09:29, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

User:CmdrObot

Hi! Sorry to bother you, but can I have a link to User:CmdrObot's approval? It doesn't seem to be in the usual place. Thanks! ST47Talk 22:28, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

No problem ST47. I had to dig a bit to find it myself! It can be found here under Wikipedia:Bots/Requests_for_approval from March 2006. Cheers, Cmdrjameson 02:49, 28 April 2007 (UTC)
Ahha - thanks! ST47Talk 12:13, 28 April 2007 (UTC)

semiprotection

Hi Auburn,

I have a large number of articles on my watchlist (mostly small Irish towns/villages) that undergo regular vandalism from random IPs. Usually it's idiot school kids saying "this village bites", or "John sucks cock" or other such nonsense. I'm considering requesting that some of them be semi-protected, and I noticed that you've turned down a number of requests on RFPP on the basis that there's an insufficiently high rate of vandalism. As a rule of thumb, approximately how much vandalism do you consider enough to warrant semi-protection?

Cheers, Cmdrjameson 14:21, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

When deciding whether to protect a page, I look at both the history and logs for the page. In the logs, I check whether or not it has been protected/unprotected recently and whether or not protection was due to vandalism or edit wars. Then I check the history to see what type of vandalism is occurring; is it IP vandals, new user vandals, page move vandals, etc. In general, I expect there to be more than two or three reverts in a given day over an extended period of time. An article like Tesoro High School is a good example. There hasn't been a constructive edit by a registered user since January 25, 2007, but I wouldn't protect this article because there are frequently days and sometimes a week between edits. Also notice some IP users are actually removing the vandalism. Basically, it's a judgement call; there's no real rule of thumb. - auburnpilot talk 03:17, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Warning vandals

Hello. I'm in agreement with the recent revert you made. You may already know about them, but you might find Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace useful. After a revert, these can be placed on the user's talk page to let them know you considered their edit was inappropriate, and also direct new users towards the sandbox. They can also be used to give a stern warning to a vandal when they've been previously warned. Best regards, --AW 21:45, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

Hi Andrew, which article are you talking about, out of curiosity? I know about the vandalism warning templates, but I tend not to use them for anonymous edits unless there's evidence that the same IP has vandalised a few articles in a short timespan. To me, it seems kinda pointless to do otherwise, particularly with dynamic IPs used ISPs. Cheers, Cmdrjameson 14:22, 3 May 2007 (UTC)
Hi Commander, this edit here [1]. I usually at least give them the {{uw-v1}} or if it's more egregious the {{anon vandal}} but I guess it's personal preference. Thanks! --AW 16:10, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

Image:Metamorphosis (Stargate SG-1).jpg

Hello, Cmdrjameson. An automated process has found and will an image or media file tagged as nonfree media, and thus is being used under fair use that is in your userspace. The image (Image:Metamorphosis (Stargate SG-1).jpg) was found at the following location: User:Cmdrjameson/archive2. This image or media will be removed per criterion number 9 of our non-free content policy. The image or media will be replaced with Image:NonFreeImageRemoved.svg , so your formatting of your userpage should be fine. This does not necessarily mean that the image is being deleted, or that the image is being removed from other pages. It is only being removed from the page mentioned above. All mainspace instances of this image will not be affected Please find a free image or media to replace it with, and or remove the image from your userspace. Blade Runner (game) article

Hello! I have written some comments at the talk page to an article which you have previously seen; would you like to add to them somewhat? In my view the article is above that of a Start class; probably at B-class for now. Is there an importance rating for videogames? We will need a couple of positive opinions in addition to mine own to get it up there. See what you think; here is the talk page. Thanks! - D-Katana 10:25, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

Good Job on the Ratchet: Deadlocked page!

Great job on that one. I've been playing the game for three years and decided to check the articles for a prep on creating it. I found your article with just one flaw. You did not include the Multiplayer and Online modes to it. I hope you don't mind but I added in a small section for those modes together. Aquzenn 01:35, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

Hi Aquzeen, thanks for the compliment, but I'm afraid I didn't create the Ratchet: Deadlocked, I just fixed a few spelling mistakes on it. The man you're looking for is Dragon's Light. Cheers, Cmdrjameson 14:39, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

The Victorian English Gentlmens Club

Hi. Your bot made a revision to this page, adding a possessive when in fact the band's name is correctly spelt without. Is there anything that can be done to prevent this happening in the future? Your bot's revision can be found here:(http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=The_Victorian_English_Gentlemens_Club&diff=133482032&oldid=131554798) Thanks, Ed55 14:18, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

Absolutely. I'll add it to my bot's exception list so that it doesn't try to make that change again in future. Sorry for the incorrect edit. Cheers, Cmdrjameson 10:25, 29 May 2007 (UTC)

Taz Alexander article

Thank your bot (like it would care) for making the links in an article I wrote compact. It looks much cleaner now. :)—Preceding unsigned comment added by Zhaboka (talkcontribs)

Ellipsis

In your edit of Schema (Kant), you removed the ellipses that are created by using "& h e l l i p ;" and replaced them with three marks. I thought that we were supposed to use "& h e l l i p ;".Lestrade 23:44, 25 June 2007 (UTC)Lestrade
