List of recurring characters in order of first appearance in Sonic the Hedgehog (1991), Sonic the Hedgehog 2, SegaSonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic the Hedgehog CD, Sonic Triple Trouble, and Knuckles' Chaotix.

Sonic the Hedgehog[edit]

According to various official materials from Sega, Sonic is described as a character who is "like the wind":[1] a drifter who lives as he wants,[2] and makes life a series of events and adventures.[3] Sonic hates oppression and staunchly defends freedom.[4] Although he is mostly easy-going[2] he has a short temper[2] and is often impatient with slower things.[1] Sonic is a habitual daredevil hedgehog who is honest, loyal to friends, keeps his promises,[3] and dislikes tears.[5] He took the young Tails under his wing like a little brother,[6] but is uninterested in the marrital proposals from Amy Rose.[7] In times of crisis, he focuses intensely on the challenge[1] as if his personality had undergone an astonishing change.[3]

Sonic is known as the world's fastest hedgehog.[4] Sonic's greatest strength is his running speed, which is faster than the speed of sound.[5] Many of his abilities are variations on the tendency for hedgehogs to roll into tight balls for protection with the addition of spinning his body. Since his introduction in 1991's Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic's primary offensive maneuver is the basic "Spin Attack" (or "Sonic Spin Attack").[8] Later games in the series expanded on this basic attack and two of these enhancements have become mainstays of his: the Spin Dash which was introduced in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and involves Sonic spinning on the spot before blasting off at full speed,[9] and the Homing Attack, officially introduced in Sonic Adventure, in which Sonic dashes in midair toward a target.[4] However, Sonic's weakness is that he can't swim, sinking like a rock if plunged to a deep body of water.[5] However, he can overcome said weakness by running on the surface of water.

When seven Chaos Emeralds are collected in most Sonic games, Sonic can initiate a super transformation into Super Sonic, a faster and invulnerable version of himself that can fly.[10] In the 2D games, he enters Super Sonic mode after collecting 50 Rings; in the 3D games where Super Sonic is playable, he starts off in the form with 50 Rings. While transformed, Sonic slowly loses Rings during the time he is in the form and returns to normal when all the Rings are used up; the player can collect more Rings during this time to keep him as Super Sonic.

Doctor Eggman[edit]

Miles "Tails" Prower[edit]

The character of Miles "Tails" Prower is portrayed as a very sweet-natured[11] and humble fox;[12] who, before he met Sonic, used to be picked on because of his two tails.[3] As a long time friend,[11] he admires Sonic[13] and dreams of being just like him.[14] Though he lacks courage,[3] he wants to prove he can be counted on[15]. He loves mint candy,[5] tinkering with machines, and flying mechas.[3] Tails has a fear of thunder[5] and a tendency to ramble.

At 8 years old, standing 80 cm (2 ft 7 in) and weighing 20 kg (44 lbs),[3] Tails has been described as a mechanical prodigy who rivals Dr. Eggman, however he has yet to realize his full potential.[13] Additionally, by spinning his two tails like a helicopter rotor, he has the unique ability to push himself through the air[11] to catch up with Sonic. However, when he takes to flight, he tires quickly.Cite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page).

Mighty the Armadillo[edit]

According to the Japanese booklet of Chaotix, Mighty is a gentle and caring pacifist, only using his strength and fighting abilities when there is no other option. He loves to travel, and his dream is to journey to all places of the world. Mighty enjoys forest bathing, likes peace and nature, and detests violence.[16]

Amy Rose[edit]

Amy's character is the bright and overly cheerful self-appointed girlfriend of Sonic.[17] She loves soft-serve ice cream and hates boredom,[18] has a natural initiative,[19] and a strong competitive streak,[17] but gets into trouble often.[7] With her strong sense of intuition and great passion[20] Sonic has difficulty escaping her.[19] Because of her pure heart[20] her character has often been used as the series Ingenue. Amy is quite formidable with her Piko Piko Hammer,[21] a weapon her skills with are second to none.[17]

Metal Sonic[edit]

Metal Sonic (メタル ・ソニック, Metaru Sonikku) is a robotic version of Sonic created by Dr. Eggman. He first appears in Sonic the Hedgehog CD, ordered to change the past by Eggman. He returns in Knuckles' Chaotix, where he attempts to obtain the Chaos Rings, but he is stopped by the Chaotix. He appears as a boss in Sonic Triple Trouble and Sonic the Fighters. He is playable in Sonic Drift 2 and Sonic R, and a bonus character in Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2. He acts as the main antagonist of Sonic Heroes, where he transforms himself into Neo Metal Sonic. His appearance changes vastly and he uses a ability to transform into other beings in order to manipulate the main characters. He betrays Eggman, and uses data he collects to transform into more powerful forms. After being defeated, he contemplates not being able to defeat Sonic, returns to his original form, and he is taken away by Omega and Shadow. Eggman reobtains him and reprograms him to be obedient. He returns as an enemy in Sonic Rivals, and appears as a playable character in Sonic Rivals 2, acting under Eggman's orders.

Metal Sonic is able to match the speed of Sonic by using an engine to propel himself. He also has several of Sonic's abilities, along with being able to copy the abilities of others, such as Knuckles' strength and Silver's psychokinesis powers. He usually only communicates with a series of electronic noises, though he is able to speak in his Neo form. The form also grants him the ability to transform into the large "Metal Madness" and "Metal Overlord" forms after collecting enough data, which grants him various projectiles and the endurance to match Super Sonic. Several other versions appear, such as Silver Sonic in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Mecha Sonic in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and Metal Sonic 3.0, a black and yellow version created by Eggman Nega in Sonic Rivals 2. Metal Sonic is voiced by Junichi Kanemaru in the Japanese version of Sonic Heroes and Ryan Drummond in the English version.

Vector the Crocodile[edit]

Vector the Crocodile (ベクター・ザ・クロコダイル, Bekutā za Kurokodairu) is a large, strong, anthropomorphic crocodile. He is the "head honcho" of and the brains behind the Chaotix Detective Agency.[22] Divided between being "bossy" and "easy-going," his rough speech and outward appearance mask his clear reasoning and ability to resolve cases.[23] For the right price he'll take on most jobs, unless they involve doing something immoral.[22] Vector has a strong sense of justice and kindness, despite his argumentativeness.[23] He often does unpaid work due to his charitable nature,[22] leaving the agency constantly short on money.[23] Vector hates having to work for the landlord; but he enjoys performing in a band,[23] and his trademark is a set of headphones.[22] He is physically strong[23] and his powerful jaws are a formidable weapon.[22]

Espio the Chameleon[edit]

Espio the Chameleon is a pinkish purple anthropomorphic chameleon, who is an expert ninja. He is described as the "guardian of honor" of the Chaotix.[24] He has a "militaristic discipline" while also being quiet and laidback.[25] Confident in his skills,[24] opinionated and self obsessed,[25] he revels in training and self discipline.[24] He is not concerned by danger, and in fact yearns to face it for the satisfaction of using his Ninja skills.[24] With his extensive training in Ninjutsu and his "stealth camouflage trick," in which he makes his body transparent, he is able to move around unnoticed.[25] However, a blunder like a sneeze could cause him to inadvertently become visible.[24]

Charmy Bee[edit]

Charmy Bee is a young, childish anthropomorphic bee and acts as the "scatterbrained funny-kid" of the Chaotix.[26] Cheerful, curious, frivolous, careless, and greatly energetic, he is in perpetual motion and often talks about things no one else cares about.[27] Charmy's fooling around makes the rest of the detective agency staff look professional, and he is generally seen as a "cute mascot."[26] Despite a normally innocent,[27] good natured and light hearted personality, he'll use his stinging tail on the rare occasion that he gets angry.[26][27]

Chaos[edit]

Chaos (カォス, Kaosu) is a Chao mutated by the Chaos Emeralds that acts as a guardian for its species and provides clear water around the altar of the Master Emerald.[28] He is a water-like being that can easily manipulate his own body, allowing him to stretch his limbs and liquefy himself. Without any Chaos Emeralds, he is known as Chaos 0, and as he absorbs the emeralds, he transforms into six more numbered forms, and eventually becomes the large "Perfect Chaos".

After the Echindna tribe attempts to steal the Chaos Emeralds, harming various Chao in the process, Chaos absorbs the negative energy of the emeralds and rampages until being sealed inside the Master Emerald with Tikal. He is released thousands of years later by Dr. Eggman in a bid to conquer the world in Sonic Adventure. Chaos, still filled with negative energy, absorbs Chaos Emeralds given to him by Eggman, and after Eggman is defeated, Chaos absorbs the last emerald and becomes "Perfect Chaos." He is defeated by Sonic, which purifies Chaos, and allows him to leave peacefully with the spirit of Tikal. He reappears in Sonic Adventure 2 as a bonus character and in Sonic Battle as a playable character that appears after Eggman launches his Death Egg.

Big the Cat[edit]

Big the Cat (ビッグ ・ザ ・キャット, Biggu za Kyatto) is a large purple cat with yellow eyes. He first debuted in Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast, and later appears as a playable character in Sonic Shuffle and Sonic Heroes whilst making various cameo appearances in other games, such as Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic and the Secret Rings, and Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games. Big is a fisherman, and brings his fishing rod with him wherever he goes. He lives in a hut at the Mystic Ruins with his best friend, Froggy, a large frog. Big is simple minded and appears to be somewhat slow witted, but is also very humble, friendly and protective of his friends. He has been voiced by Syun Yashiro and Takashi Nagasako in Japanese, and Jon St. John and Pete Zarustica in English.

E-102 Gamma[edit]

E-102 Gamma is a robot created by Eggman. He is given the mission to collect Chaos Emeralds for Chaos after defeating his sibling robot, E-101 Beta. After witnessing the fate of Beta, Gamma decides to turn against Eggman and "rescue" the other E-Series robots by defeating them and releasing small animals used to power them. He eventually battles and defeats an upgraded Beta, which leaves Gamma mortally wounded. They both end up destroyed, which releases two related Flickies that join with the other Flicky under the care of Amy Rose. He reappears as a playable character in Sonic Shuffle after being "revived with the power of dreams."

E-102 Chaos Gamma, a new, remodeled version, appears as a playable character in Sonic Battle. He is powered by a shard of a Chaos Emerald, and battles Emerl several times in order to become stronger. He eventually forms a bond with Emerl, but remains loyal to Eggman. E-102 Gamma is voiced by George Nakata in Japanese media, Steve Broadie in the English version of Sonic Adventure, Deem Bristow in the English version of Sonic Shuffle, and Jon St. John in the English version of Sonic battle.

E-Series[edit]

Tikal[edit]

Tikal (ティカル, Tikaru) is the daughter of Chief Pachacamac in the same tribe as Knuckles the Echidna descends.[29] She first appears in Sonic Adventure and returns in Sonic Adventure 2 as a bonus character. Thousands of years before the main events of the series, she opposes her father's power-hungry ways in invading other countries.[30] She eventually comes into contact with Chaos and a group of Chao at the shrine of the Master Emerald, who accept her due to her friendliness to them. After Pachacamac raids the shrine, angering Chaos, Tikal recites an ancient poem about Chaos, sealing her spirit along with Chaos in the Master Emerald.[31] Several thousand years later, Dr. Eggman shatters the Master Emeralds and awakens the angry Chaos and Tikal's spirit. Tikal helps the main characters defeat Chaos, and then returns to the Emerald with Chaos.[32] She is voiced by Kaori Asoh in Japanese media and Elara Distler in the English video games.

Guardian Units of Nations (G.U.N.)[edit]

Shadow the Hedgehog[edit]

According to official profiles, Shadow was created long ago by Prof. Gerald Robotnik to be the Ultimate Life Form.[33] Sharp witted and seemingly always on the edge,[1] Shadow is described as the dark incarnation of Sonic the Hedgehog.[34] Once he has set himself to a goal, he will do whatever it takes to accomplish it,[1] regardless of any danger.[35] After the trauma of the death of his first closest friend, Maria Robotnik, Shadow strives to fulfill his purpose and keep the promise he made to her,[1] despite his general loathing of mankind.[35] Although his relationship with Sonic seems to have developed from antagonistic to friendly rivalry, animosity from not understanding their different mindsets continues.[36]

Shadow is ageless and immortal.[37] However, Shadow shares a lot in common with Sonic.[35] Shadow can skate at speeds fast enough to rival the speeds Sonic can run.[38] He can also perform spin attacks common to Sonic,[33] which are a variations on the tendency for hedgehogs to roll into tight balls for protection. Additionally, with the power of a Chaos Emerald, Shadow can warp time and space with Chaos Control.[33][34][35] In contrast, the Archie Comics version of Shadow can directly access the "Chaos Force" and does not require a Chaos Emerald. Shadow is also able to use a variety of other Chaos powers, such as "Chaos Spear" and "Chaos Blast".[35]

By harnessing the power of the seven Chaos Emeralds, Shadow is able to use super transformation to transform into Super Shadow.[39] He is bestowed with the new abilities of flight and near invulnerability, like Super Sonic, and his normal abilities of speed and his Chaos powers are greatly enhanced.

Rouge the Bat[edit]

Rouge the Bat (ルージュ・ザ・バット, Rūju za Batto) is depicted as a professional treasure hunter devoted to the pursuit of jewels.[40][41] She also calls herself the "World's Greatest Thief," and she fearlessly does whatever needed, disregards personal cost, and ignores abstract morality or manners for potential profit.[40][42][43] Additionally, she serves as a part time spy for the government's G.U.N. Federation.[40] Her "feminine charm" makes her appear careless, but she is actually scheming and manipulative.[40][43] She may have a secret crush on Knuckles the Echidna's that she won't admit, which is influenced by his determination to protect the Master Emerald.[43] And she teams up with Shadow the Hedgehog and E-123 Omega.[40] Rouge fights using kicks, especially her signature "Screw Kick," and she can fly using her wings.[40][41][44] She is voiced by Rumi Ochiai in all Japanese media, and Lani Minella and Caren Manuel in English media.

Rouge first appears in Sonic Adventure 2 as the treasure-hunting character of the Dark Story. She seeks to find the shards of the Master Emerald before Knuckles, and eventually teams up with the other characters to save the Earth. She returns in Sonic Heroes, where she accidentally releases Shadow from his stasis and teams up with him and E-123 Omega to find Eggman. She appears in various levels of Shadow the Hedgehog and helps Shadow accomplish different goals. She acts as Shadow's partner once again in Sonic the Hedgehog, closely following him and acting independently in some levels. She appears in the story of Sonic Rivals, where she is turned into a card, and saved by Shadow. She is playable in the sequel, where she teams up with Knuckles to find the Master Emerald. Rouge is one of the main characters in Sonic Battle, unlockable in Sonic Riders and Sonic Rivals 2, and will be playable in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood.

Professor Gerald Robotnik[edit]

Professor Gerald Robotnik (ジラルド・ロボトニック, Jirarudo Robotonikku) is the grandfather of Maria Robotnik and Dr. Ivo Robotnik, as well as the creator of Shadow the Hedgehog, Space Colony ARK, the Biolizard, Artificial Chaos, and various other projects. Fifty years before the main series, he attempts to create the "Ultimate Life Form" under the funding of the United Federation, hoping that it can help cure Maria's illness. He fails various times until meeting with the alien, Black Doom, and using his DNA to create Shadow. He learns of Black Doom's true plan, and prepares the ARK to act against Black Doom when the time comes. Maria is left dead when G.U.N. decides to terminate Gerald's experiments, causing Gerald to loose his grip on reality. He plans to crash the ARK into the planet, he is soon captured and executed. He is voiced by Marc Biagi in Sonic Adventure 2 and by Mike Pollock in Shadow the Hedgehog.

Maria Robotnik[edit]

Maria Robotnik (マリア‧ロボトニック, Maria Robotonikku) is a character that appears in flashbacks during Sonic Adventure 2, and Shadow the Hedgehog. She is the granddaughter of Professor Gerald Robotnik, and is the cousin of Doctor Ivo Robotnik. Maria suffers from the illness known as "NIDS" (Neuro-Immune Deficiency Syndrome), which is incurable at the time. Gerald takes on Project Shadow in order to save her. Soon after Shadow is created, the two bond deeply, though it is short lived as G.U.N. soon raids the ARK, leaving Maria dead. Before her death, she encases Shadow in an escape pod, and asks him to bring hope to humanity and give humans a chance to be happy. This experience scars Shadow for life, but ultimately his determination to keep his promise to Maria leads him to become friends with Sonic .She is voiced by Yuri Shiratori in Japanese, and Shelly Fox and Bella Hudson in English.

Cream the Rabbit[edit]

Cream the Rabbit (クリーム・ザ・ラビット, Kurīmu za Rabitto) is a rabbit constantly accompanied by her Chao, Cheese (チーズ, Chīzu). Their names were based on "cream cheese."[45] Cream is portrayed as being naive because of being brought up like a princess by her mother, Vanilla.[46] She always politely minds her manners[47] but sometimes acts childishly.[47] She is always found with Cheese, who distinguishes himself from other Chao with a red bow-tie, and he often attacks for Cream by ramming into her adversaries.[48] Cream can achieve flight for short periods of time by flapping with her two large ears.[46] The character of Cream was conceived as a "sweet girl", so Cheese was created to avoid having her physically attack enemies to keep that trait.[45] Cream is voiced by Sayaka Aoki in all Japanese media, Sarah Wulfeck in English media during 2003 and 2004, and Rebecca Handler in English media from 2005 onwards.

Cream's first playable appearance is in Sonic Advance 2 as the first character saved from Eggman.[49] She returns in Sonic Heroes as part of Team Rose along with Amy Rose and Big the Cat.[50] She joins with them to search for Cheese's sibling, Chocola, and eventually helps stop Metal Sonic. She is a playable character within Sonic Battle, where she befriends Emerl and teaches him about emotions. She is a playable character in Sonic Advance 3, and befriends the rebuilt Gemerl. She becomes friends with Blaze the Cat during Sonic Rush, she is unlockable in Sonic Riders and Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, and she is unlockable in the Sonic and the Secret Rings Party Mode. She is also due to make an appearance in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood,[51] as a playable character.

Cream appears in the Sonic X anime and its comic adaptation. She and Cheese support Sonic on his adventures for the Chaos Emeralds and help Cosmo stop the Metarex.

Vanilla the Rabbit[edit]

Vanilla the Rabbit (ヴァニラ・ザ・ラビット, Vanira za Rabitto) is a cream-colored, anthropomorphic rabbit, introduced with Cream the Rabbit as her mother in Sonic Advance 2. In Sonic Advance 2, Vanilla and Cream were kidnapped by Doctor Eggman and separated. Cream was rescued by Sonic the Hedgehog, and Cream then rescued Vanilla. She also takes in G-mel after the events of Sonic Advance 3, and makes a brief appearance in Sonic Rush. She also makes minor appearances in Sonic X and the comic book based on it.

E-123 Omega[edit]

E-123 Omega (オメガ, Omega) is the last of Doctor Eggman's E-100 series robots, specifically designed to contain and control Shadow the Hedgehog. In his first appearance in Sonic Heroes, Eggman seals Omega within the away with Shadow until Rouge the Bat accidentally releases Shadow from his stasis pod.[52] Infuriated at being sealed, Omega decides to team up with the two to obtain revenge on Eggman and prove that he is the most powerful creation of Eggman.[53] He returns with the same goal in Shadow the Hedgehog, and teams up with Shadow in certain levels to destroy Eggman's robots. During Sonic the Hedgehog, he is playable after being given commands by Rouge to support Shadow many years in the future.[54] He will be playable in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood.[55]

Omega has an array of weapons concealed in his arms, including machine guns, flamethrowers, missile launchers, and energy cannons. He can also retract his hands in order to attach a spinning Shadow and Rouge in their place, either using the two as melee weapons or firing them.[52] Omega can utilize jet boosters built in his back to help accelerate and hover. He also has a range of sensors in order detect and locate enemies and other objects. Omega is voiced by Taiten Kusunoki in all Japanese media, Jon St. John in the English version of Sonic Heroes, Andrew Rannells in the English version of Shadow the Hedgehog, and Maddie Blaustein in the English version of Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).

Babylon Rogues[edit]

Jet the Hawk[edit]

Jet the Hawk (ジェット・ザ・ホーク, Jetto za Hōku) is a green anthropomorphic hawk. Sources describe him as the leader of the Babylon Rogues,[56] who is nicknamed the "Legendary Wind Master"[57] due to his mastery of Extreme Gear.[58] This mastery comes from his forefathers, and Jet is the best in the techniques.[56] His skills make him a possible match to Sonic the Hedgehog,[58] whom he considers a rival.[56] Jet is aware of his duties as leader but must sometimes be helped by his team.[56] Filled with extreme pride, the thing he likes most other than treasure is himself.[56] He despises losing and those who are faster or more confident than him and fights using Bashyo Fans.[56]

Wave The Swallow[edit]

Wave the Swallow (ウェーブ・ザ・スワロー, Uēbu za Suwarō) is a purple anthropomorphic swallow. Official profiles say that like her father was for the previous generation of the Babylon Rogues, she is the current team's mechanic.[59] Gifted in this craft,[59] she is a superb mechanic who's knowledge of Extreme Gear surpasses both Miles "Tails" Prower and Dr. Eggman.[60] Because of this knowledge, she is full of confidence.[61] She hates thick-headed or stupid people and notices everything, but her advice tends to be understandable only to her.[61] Although she looks on Jet the Hawk as an "unreliable younger brother" and can be quite stubborn, she follows his leadership.[61]

Storm the Albatross[edit]

Storm the Albatross (ストーム・ザ・アルバトロス, Sutōmu za Arubatorosu) is a hulking, anthropomorphic albatross. He is described as the muscle of the Babylon Rogues and Jet the Hawk's "right hand man."[62] The strength of his loyalty to Jet is greater than any other and he hates rivals to the team.[63] When Jet is angry, he becomes destructive;[63] and the raw power of his physical strength makes up for his lower intelligence[62] and lack of speed.[64] With his quick temper, he may stutter when flustered,[62] and he hates having to wait.[63]

Blaze the Cat[edit]

Blaze the Cat (ブレイズ ・ザ ・キャット, Bureizu za Kyatto) is a princess and the defender of the Sol Emeralds . She is portrayed as withdrawn and disciplined when interacting with strangers, though more intimate towards friends. She has pyrokinetic abilities that she is able to utilize in physical attacks during close combat and she can send out long range blasts of fire. She can also propel herself by forming a fiery tornado around her body. She can utilize the Sol Emeralds to transform into Burning Blaze.[65] Blaze's lavender fur becomes peach, her gloves and shoes become engulfed in purple flames, and she becomes surrounded by an aura of fire. She is voiced by Nao Takamori in Japanese media and Bella Hudson in English media.

Blaze debuts in Sonic Rush as a playable character along with Sonic.[66] She arrives in Sonic's dimension from another dimension along with the Sol Emeralds. While searching for the emeralds, she befriends Sonic, Tails, and Cream the Rabbit. She eventually helps stop Dr. Eggman and Eggman Nega, and returns to her dimension. She returns in Sonic the Hedgehog as Silver the Hedgehog's friend during the future of Sonic's dimension. The two fight against Iblis and attempt to fix their ruined world by traveling back in time. Blaze eventually seals Iblis within her body and has Silver send her to another dimension. She acts as a main character in Sonic Rush Adventure, where Sonic and Tails are transported to her dimension and help her retrieve her "Jeweled Scepter".[67] She is an unlockable character in the Sonic and the Secret Rings party mode and Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, and she is a playable character in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games.

Eggman Nega[edit]

Eggman Nega (ドクター・エッグマン Egguman Negau) is a video game character in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He is a human scientist and is Doctor Eggman's dimensional counterpart. His clothes are somewhat reminiscent of Eggman's original outfit. Eggman Nega is the third most featured villain in the series, behind Metal Sonic and Dr. Eggman himself. He has been the main villain in every game he has appeared in, and is fought as the final boss in Sonic Rush, Sonic Rivals, and Sonic Rush Adventure.

Silver the Hedgehog[edit]

Silver the Hedgehog (シルバー・ザ・ヘッジホッグ, Shirubā za Hejjihoggu) is from many years in the future of the main timeline. His introductory appearance is in Sonic the Hedgehog. His individual episode revolves around him traveling back in time with Blaze the Cat to find Sonic the Hedgehog, known to them as the "Iblis Trigger", who they believe is the cause of their world being destroyed in the future. Over the course of the game, Silver learns the truth about the "Iblis Trigger", and how his world can be saved from destruction. He is one of the main characters in Sonic Rivals and Sonic Rivals 2. He is unlockable in the party mode of Sonic and the Secret Rings and Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity.[68]

Silver's primary ability is Psychokinesis. He is able to levitate objects and use them as projectiles, levitate, and fly. He can also fire shock waves that temporarily paralyze his enemies. He is able to use many standard abilities similar to those of Sonic and Shadow and he can utilize Chaos Control in order to warp through time and space. He is able to transform into "Super Silver" by using the power of the Chaos Emeralds. His eyes turn red, his fur becomes a white gold color, and he becomes able to use a special "Shield of Light" to draw in and throw any object within a large circular field.

Silver was created in order to utilize the new physics engine added to Sonic the Hedgehog, and, while given several elements similar to Sonic and Shadow, provide vastly different gameplay with his other abilities. The design team developed over fifty different concepts for the character, including using Sonic's "scarf like hair" with more volume, which led to Silver originally being a Mink. They felt that a mink wouldn't blend in with the rest of the characters, so they decided to make Silver a hedgehog instead. Deciding the color was difficult for the team. Orange was their first idea, but they soon decided on white-gray. While developing the character models and textures, they focused on using the using hardware to develop the textures rather than just use white-gray, which lead to Silver's color and name.[69]
