From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hello, welcome to your New Page Patrol School page! Every person I instruct will have their own page on which I will give them support and tasks for them to complete. Please make sure you have this page added to your watchlist. Your NPP School page has been specifically designed according to you and what you have requested instruction in - for that reason, please be as specific as possible when under my instruction, so that I know the best ways to help you (and do not be afraid to let me know if you think something isn't working).

Make sure you read through Wikipedia:Notability as that's the knowledge which most of the questions I ask you and tasks you do will revolve around.

How to use this page

This page will be built up over your time in the Academy, with new sections being added as you complete old ones. Each section will end with a task, written in bold type - this might just ask a question, or it might require you to go and do something. You can answer a question by typing the answer below the task; if you have to do something, you will need to provide diffs to demonstrate that you have completed the task. Some sections will have more than one task, sometimes additional tasks may be added to a section as you complete them. Please always sign your responses to tasks as you would on a talk page.

If both the instructor and student make completing the course curriculum a top priority, it will generally take around a month to go through the entirety of the curriculum. This pace is not required or necessarily expected, but rather is provided in order to give participants an idea of what to expect.

Notability[edit]

PART 1

When patrolling or reviewing an article, you may often come across articles do not meet the WP:N guidelines, but the editors make the edits in good faith. Please read WP:AGF and do not WP:BITE the new editors.

A. Notability is a test guidelines to decide whether a given topic warrants its own article in Wikipedia mainspace. Please read Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not, General Notability Guidelines, Specific Notability Guidelines, Stand-alone list before completing the following tasks.

General notability guidelines[edit]

1. In your own words, why it is important to WP:AGF and not WP:BITE new editors.

Answer: Most of the newcomers who join Wikipedia isn't necessarily familiar with the WP:POLICIES, followed convention and culture of Wikipedia. We all are, somepoint in the past, newcomers ourselves. Since Wikipedia a community of WP:VOLUNTEERs, every newcomers has potency to make significant contribution to the project and biting newcomers, who contribute in good faith, isn't helping anyone, rather it's discouraging them from making valuable contributions in future. WikiLinuz (talk) 10:12, 11 October 2021 (UTC)

checkY. Neweditors might not aware of Wikipedia guidlines/policies and if the edit is not helpful but contribute in good faith, it is best to behave in a civilized manner to explain the edit instead of biting the editor so the new editors would learn about Wikipedia and continue to edit Wikipedia. Cassiopeia talk 04:44, 16 October 2021 (UTC)

2. In your own words, how is notability defined in Wikipedia?

Answer: General notability in Wikipedia is defined as a topic which had received a significant coverage i.e. a WP:RELIABLE WP:SECONDARY source material, which is WP:INDEPENDENT of the subject being mentioned, gives WP:DUE weightage to a topic which the subject addresses. Although, there are subject specific guidelines, the general idea of notability remains the same. WikiLinuz (talk) 10:23, 11 October 2021 (UTC)

checkY. In Wikipedia, notability means "worthy to be noted" - it is defined as a topic is "presumably" notable for stand-alone article or list if (1) it has received significant coverage with reliable sources that are independent of the subject where by the sources talk "directly" about the subject in depth and in length and not only passing mentioned and (2) it is not excluded under the What WP:Wikipedia is not policy. Cassiopeia talk 04:44, 16 October 2021 (UTC)

3. Does a step by step instructions on how to "Change a car tire" considered a notable topic in Wikipedia?

Answer: No, Wikipedia is WP:NOTGUIDE. Although inclusion of car tire as a descriptive one is within the context of an encyclopedia, having a "guideline", "tutorial" or "step by step instruction" goes against what an encyclopedia is and violates Wikipedia's policies. WikiLinuz (talk) 10:31, 11 October 2021 (UTC)

checkY. Cassiopeia talk 04:44, 16 October 2021 (UTC)

4. What are the differences between A WP:GNG and a specific notability guidelines? how do we determine which one to use when patrolling an article?

Answer: I view subject specific notability as a subset or extension to general notability guidelines. Some topics, such as a dedicated article on a book or a WP:COMPANY, have a specific community consensus which gets added as policies to help patrollers determine notability. When patrolling an article, once we figured which subject specific category an article falls into, we shall consider those specific guidelines along with WP:GNG to estimate notability. WikiLinuz (talk) 10:47, 11 October 2021 (UTC)

checkY. Both can be used when patrolling but those subject falls under SNG/SSG (sport specific guidelines) but fails to meet the WP:GNG guidelines would sometimes nominated for deletion WP:AfD for discussion to determine the status of the article and often time the aritcles would be voted for keep as some subject would hard to meet the indepdend sources requirement such as WP:NACADEMIC. (We will cover AfD in later assignment). Cassiopeia talk 04:44, 16 October 2021 (UTC)

Specific notability guidelines[edit]

5. If an editor creates an article about "2024 Summer Olympics" in 2019 without providing any sources, is the subject considered not notable and why?

Answer: This specific article falls under WP:SPORTSEVENT and WP:NEWSEVENT categories, hence I shall consider those subject specific relevant policies. If there is no verifiable reliable sources cited in support of the event, it goes against Wikipedia's policies on notability. Since Wikipedia is not a WP:CRYSTALBALL, every WP:FUTUREEVENT must meet notability criteria. So, yes, the subject is not notable. WikiLinuz (talk) 11:04, 11 October 2021 (UTC)

checkY. However, for such reputable event for 2024 we would be able to find plenty of sources to support the subject (the event). As a good practice, if the reviewer familiar with the subject, we would find sources and place it in the article (inline citation) (I have done it countless of time), so the article can be accepted and place it on the main space of Wikipedia. Cassiopeia talk 04:44, 16 October 2021 (UTC)

B. Without considered of sources/content policies and review just based on "subject specific notability" (SSN) "alone" for sake of the exercises below, please answer if the subject meets the SSN guidelines, based on the given content below, and specify under (1) which notability criteria they meet or fail (example - MUSICBI#1 if certain sub set of criteria is applicable) and (2) reasons/explanations.

6. A New York city based 2021 start up software company , specializing in data mining, has just received a USD 200K investor fund.

checkY.

7. Tagir Ulanbekov who is a Ultimate Fighting Championships fighters with the undefeated mixed martial arts record of 10-1.

☒N Subject fails WP:NMMA for not secure at least 3 fights under top tier promotion. At the moment he has only one fight under UFC. Cassiopeia talk 04:44, 16 October 2021 (UTC)

8. A upcoming action drama title "Suleiman the Great" based on the the life of Suleiman the Magnificent, was reported will be in production in December 2021 and to be released on August 2022 in the cinemas.

Answer: Does meets not WP:NTV notability. Because, as per WP:TVSHOW, a series or drama only meets notability if it had already started fliminig. But since the report only states will be in production in December 2021, it doesn't meet the criteria. WikiLinuz</spa n> (talk) 11:46, 11 October 2021 (UTC)

checkY If the action drama is a film, it is also fails WP:NFF - it is because the production start date in December 2021. Cassiopeia talk 04:44, 16 October 2021 (UTC)

9. A political candidates, without any previous or current political position, who is running for November 2021 election for a Senator position in United States with multiple local newspapers coverage of his candidacy.

checkY. Fails WP:POLITICIAN as just running for a position is not enough. Cassiopeia talk 04:44, 16 October 2021 (UTC)

10. A singer who self produced his first album in May 2020 and his songs are listed in Spotify.

Answer: Does not meet WP:NMUSIC notability. Because, as per WP:NALBUM#1, self-published works of a singer isn't notable, since they also fail WP:ENTERTAINER criteria on WP:BIO notability. The subject also fails WP:SINGER#1 since they only produced self produced album. WikiLinuz (talk) 12:00, 11 October 2021 (UTC)

checkY. Subject fails all WP:SINGER SSN notability guideline Cassiopeia talk 04:44, 16 October 2021 (UTC)

checkY - WP:NSONG is about the song and not the singer. Subject meets WP:ENTERTAINER - 1,2,3; WP:SINGER - almost all criteria and WP:NACTOR as she has featured in major roles in many movies. Cassiopeia talk 04:44, 16 October 2021 (UTC)

Background for trainees[edit]

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia for such content claimed should be supported by independent (secondary), reliable sources for verification. Please read WP:RS, WP:IS, WP:RSP, WP:V, WP:PROVEIT, WP:Primary, WP:Secondary, and WP:Tertiary and answered the the below questions in your own words.
You could contact WP:RX if you could not find the sources yourself either on web due to Paywall content or printed books.

Exercises[edit]

1.
Topic Explanation 5 Examples Comment by Cass
Reliable source Common way to classify a source's reliability is to determine if a WP:PUBLISHED, verifiable and has a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy. Determining a particular source's reliability is subjective to the type of source. If it's an academic journal, we make sure it's not a predatory or non-peer-reviewed journal. If it's a published work in magazines, we check for the reputation of the author. If it's a book, we make sure it's published through scholarly printing presses and the scholar have a reputation for their scholarships. WikiLinuz (talk) 22:12, 18 October 2021 (UTC)

  2. The Washington Post
  3. JSTOR

  5. The New York Times
  6. Princeton University Press
checkY. JSTOR is digital library and it can not be the source. Cassiopeia talk 09:31, 1 November 2021 (UTC)
User-generated sources User-generated sources are the ones whose content is largely composed of users' opinions, thoughts, etc. which are neither subjected to peer-review nor fact-checking. Some websites act as a medium to host their user's content for their online presence. These sources should not be considered reliable, since any user could post anything which includes false information, unsubstantiated medical claims, etc. However, few sources, such as a Tweet from an academic which is posed under a verified Twitter account can be considered as WP:PRIMARY, although care should be given when using such sources on Wikipedia. 2. Facebook
  3. 4Chan
  4. Stack Overflow
  5. 9GAG
checkY. Cassiopeia talk 09:31, 1 November 2021 (UTC)
Non-Independent source A source is considered non-independent if it is closely affiliated with the subject. Many reliable publications publish paid articles that are WP:SPONSORED by third-party and mostly written by authors with conflict of interest. These sources are not considered reliable since it's explicitly paid to bypass the editorial process to promote a particular POV for the purposes of advertisement and promotion. 4. Please explain in your own words why the content claimed needs to be verified?

Answer: Since Wikipedia is not a platform for original thoughts, any readers of the encyclopedia should be able to verify where the piece of information that's included comes from in order to trust that it comes through a reliable medium. It's also important to WP:NPOV, one of the core content policies. WikiLinuz (talk) 22:12, 20 October 2021 (UTC)

checkY. Content needs to verifiable so we may know where the info/source from for we could know if the source is independent and/or reliable; however, NPOV has nothing to do with verifiability. (note: We will discuss NPOV in Assignment 3). Cassiopeia talk 09:31, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

5.Could we used Wikipedia as the source? and why?

Answer: No, Wikipedia is not a reliable source and using Wikipedia article as a source in another article is WP:CIRCULAR. WikiLinuz (talk) 22:12, 20 October 2021 (UTC)

checkY. Cassiopeia talk 09:31, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

6.Give an example and explain why a source is reliable but not independent of a subject?

Answer: The Washington Post is reliable per WP:RSP, but it's owned by Nash Holdings LLC, the company now owned by Jeff Bezos, hence it's neither independent of Nash Holdings LLC nor Bezos. I'd take reports by The Washing Post about its parent companies such as AWS, Amazon, or Twitch with a grain of salt too. WikiLinuz (talk) 22:38, 20 October 2021 (UTC)

checkY. Cassiopeia talk 09:31, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

7.Give an example and explain why a source is independent source but not reliable?

Answer: Reports produced by The Canary about English Defence League, since it's evidently proven as a left-wing news publication, it is unreliable for the reports on EDL although it's independent of the subject. WikiLinuz (talk) 22:54, 20 October 2021 (UTC)

checkY It doesnt matter if the left or right wing publication. The point here is that the source is not a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy. Cassiopeia talk 09:31, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

Fallingwater, Mill Run, Pennsylvania (1937)

Frank Lloyd Wright (June 8, 1867 – April 9, 1959) was an American architect, interior designer, writer, and educator. Wright believed in designing structures that were in harmony with humanity and its environment, a philosophy he called organic architecture. His creative period spanned more than 70 years. He works includes The Guggenheim, swirling, snail-shaped museum in the middle of Manhattan.[1][2] Fallingwater, which has been called "the best all-time work of American architecture."[3] This is one of Wright's most famous private residences (completed 1937), was built for Mr. and Mrs. Edgar J. Kaufmann, Sr., at Mill Run, Pennsylvania. Constructed over a 30-foot waterfall, it was designed according to Wright's desire to place the occupants close to the natural surroundings. The house was intended to be more of a family getaway, rather than a live-in home.[4]

Answer: She was a boxer who turned into a professional after winning an amateur fight on December 14, 2013, at the age of 19. She also fought against XXX promotion on her next fight in February 2014.

10. He is a popular, acclaimed Bulgarian actor, who loves by all who have watched his films. He was born in Veliko Tarnovo and started working in the film industry since he was at the tender, innocent of the age of 14 and he has featured in 44 films.

Answer: He is a Bulgarian actor, who's born in Veliko Tarnovo and started working in the film industry at the age of 14. He has been featured in 44 films.

11. Please read WP:DUE and in your own words, please explain why it is important to provide balance and due weight content in an article.

Answer: DUE refers to the weightage given in the mainspace article text to a source. DUE weightage of the prominent viewpoint, i.e. a point of view acclaimed within the academic census, should be given in the mainspace article text to avoid violating NPOV. Fringe writing, although published in a reliable source, should be given a lower prominence (or weight) compared to a more prominent viewpoint. To achieve WP:BALANCE, we should include significant viewpoints from both sides by giving DUE weight to both in accordance with their eminence.

No original research[edit]

Please read WP:OR and WP:NOT and answer the questions below
12. In your own words, why Wikipedia is not a platform to publish original research?

Answer: Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and is not a platform to publish their own thoughts or personal feelings about a subject; we stick to reliable sources based on the community consensus about a subject. When someone reads the article text, they should be able to verify the piece of information, which is where citing sources come into the picture. Wikipedia's policies also state that mainspace texts should be verifiable and published under reliable secondary sources which are reputed peer-reviewed and fact-checked; thus, if things needed to be added/removed, we must in adherence to the site's policies.

13. In your own words, please provide one example with explanation when it is appropriate to insert an original research or an opinion in an article.

Answer: Per WP:TRANSCRIPTION, faithfully translating a non-English source into English for usage under English Wikipedia is not considered OR, nor does transcribing a video source into English text for the usage in articles. Examples include translating a German new organization's report on a recent event into English Wikipedia and transcribing a BBC report on a subject.

14. See this video and write the content in the in an article by using the video info as the source.

Answer: Sh. Shady ALsuleiman answered the question regarding dress code restrictions such as wearing jeans or trousers in Islam, which is published by Islam Net; and he answers that Islam demands men and women to wear clothes that are loose-fitting, non-colourful attractive, non-see-through and must be covering de aura.

Verifiability[edit]

Please read WP:V and answer the questions below
15. If the subject has two sons and it is supported by three independent, reliable sources but in reality he has 3 sons. Could we change the content from "2" sons to "3 sons"? and why?

Answer: No. Unless 'latest' reliable sources say that he indeed has 3 children, we should not include that in Wikipedia, since it goes against OR and verifiability policies on BLP articles.
