Hello, welcome to your New Page Patrol School page! Every person I instruct will have their own page on which I will give them support and tasks for them to complete. Please make sure you have this page added to your watchlist. Your NPP School page has been specifically designed according to you and what you have requested instruction in - for that reason, please be as specific as possible when under my instruction, so that I know the best ways to help you (and do not be afraid to let me know if you think something isn't working).

Make sure you read through Wikipedia:Notability as that's the knowledge which most of the questions I ask you and tasks you do will revolve around.

How to use this page

This page will be built up over your time in the Academy, with new sections being added as you complete old ones. Each section will end with a task, written in bold type - this might just ask a question, or it might require you to go and do something. You can answer a question by typing the answer below the task; if you have to do something, you will need to provide diffs to demonstrate that you have completed the task. Some sections will have more than one task, sometimes additional tasks may be added to a section as you complete them. Please always sign your responses to tasks as you would on a talk page.

If both the instructor and student make completing the course curriculum a top priority, it will generally take around a month to go through the entirety of the curriculum. This pace is not required or necessarily expected, but rather is provided in order to give participants an idea of what to expect.

Notability

PART 1

When patrolling or reviewing an article, you may often come across articles do not meet the WP:N guidelines, but the editors make the edits in good faith. Please read WP:AGF and do not WP:BITE the new editors.

A. Notability is a test guidelines to decide whether a given topic warrants its own article in Wikipedia mainspace. Please read Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not, General Notability Guidelines, Specific Notability Guidelines, Stand-alone list before completing the following tasks.

General notability guidelines

1. In your own words, why it is important to WP:AGF and not WP:BITE new editors.

Answer: Assuming good faith is important because the other editor may not consider what they're doing to be harmful, they may take it as if they're doing the right thing. It is however left for you to have a conversation(civil) with them and if possible, know why they did what they did and if what they did was really wrong, you show them the appropriate thing to do. Bitting new comers often scares them away as a new comer who may have been of great help to the project in the future might have been scared away just because of your actions or your deeds. It is good to have a conversation before taking any strict action against them as this may just end their journey on Wikipedia. --Comr Melody Idoghor (talk) 12:42, 22 December 2021 (UTC)

Y Note: We considered if an edit is harmful is by the intention of the editor. Assuming good faith and civility are especially important when dueling with new editors for they make mistakes unwittingly due to not familiar with Wikipedia's guidelines. Harsh criticism might make them feel their contribution to the project is not welcome which might drive the editors away from Wikipedia. Instead, assumng good faith and communicate with new editors in a friendly and welcoming manner by educating and correct their mistakes could keep the editors continuing editing Wikipedia in a constructive manner. 2. In your own words, how is notability defined in Wikipedia?

Answer: Well, to me I believe Notability is the threshold for every article. If an article is non notable, I don't see it surviving in this space. In Wikipedia, notability means "worthy to be noted" - it is defined as a topic is "presumably" notable for stand-alone article or list if (1) it has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject whee by the sources talk "directly" about the subject in depth and in length and not only passing mentioned and (2) it is not excluded under the What WP:Wikipedia is not policy. 3. Does a step by step instructions on how to "Change a car tire" considered a notable topic in Wikipedia?

Answer: A good writer might be able to write this topic in a way that it becomes notable because they've added enough sources to actually support anything they're saying, but a part of WP:NOT states that “While Wikipedia has descriptions of people, places and things, an article should not read like a "how-to" style owner's manual, cookbook, advice column (legal, medical or otherwise) or suggestion box. This includes tutorials, instruction manuals, game guides, and recipes.” Which automatically raise a red flag at that article because instructing the readers in the imperative mood about how to use or do something is not encyclopaedic, so it's not notable. --Comr Melody Idoghor (talk) 13:15, 22 December 2021 (UTC)

4. What are the differences between A WP:GNG and a specific notability guidelines? how do we determine which one to use when patrolling an article?

Answer: GNG is the generally accepted guidelines cut across all articles however there are some of these articles that are not usually covered in GNG(Reliable and independent sources) this is where SNG comes in. SNG varies according to topic/profession. Where GNG is not able to cover, SNG is there to perform the miracle. An instance was when I declined a draft about a professor sometime ago for not passing GNG, my attention was drawn by DGG here to WP:NPROF

Y The general notability guideline (GNG) is the usual measure determining whether a topic is notable in Wikipedia. However, certain subjects would not meet GNG due to the fact that no article talk about them directly in length and in dept such the academics- WP:PROF - who would received few or none independence source talk about them (we would see BBC write an article about car stuck in a tree see here but not the President of Australian National University would be hard to find) Other SGN such as WP:NCORP and WP:NPOL specify a very strict set of source criteria and requirements respectively. Do note SGN does not superseded GNG, but both can be used to determine if the subject pass notability. Cases of subject fails GNG can be nominated for AfD (Article for deletion); and many times the articles are save from deleting due the the subjects pass SNG of their particular fields. Specific notability guidelines

5. If an editor creates an article about "2024 Summer Olympics" in 2019 without providing any sources, is the subject considered not notable and why?

Answer: The subject is not notable per there is no sources in the article , which means that if sources where to be added it will be notable because Olympic is a notable topic itself. As the reviewer, you can also help by searching for sources. Y. We would usually be able to find many indepdend, reliable sources (IRS) for 2023 Summer Olympics in 2019 as the Olympics committee and countries of interested in hosting the games starts 8 years prior the event actually happens. Cassiopeia talk 02:59, 24 December 2021 (UTC)

B. Without considered of sources/content policies and review just based on "subject specific notability" (SSN) "alone" for sake of the exercises below, please answer if the subject meets the SSN guidelines, based on the given content below, and specify under (1) which notability criteria they meet or fail (example - MUSICBI#1 if certain sub set of criteria is applicable) and (2) reasons/explanations.

6. A New York city based 2021 start up software company , specializing in data mining, has just received a USD 200K investor fund.

Answer: WP:NCORP states that “An organization is generally considered notable if it has been the subject of significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources.” So receiving 200k is not a criteria for Notability. It fails NCORP.

7. Tagir Ulanbekov who is a Ultimate Fighting Championships fighters with the undefeated mixed martial arts record of 10-1.

Answer: I don't really know how to answer this as I have zero interest) little or no knowledge in sports but I think maybe notable per WP:NMMA which the first criteria states that "Have fought at least three professional fights for a top-tier MMA organization and this person has fought more than 3

N Subject has only fought 2 fights in top-tier MMA organization. - see here. Subject need one more fight in UFC to have at least 3 fights in top tier mma promotion to pass WP:NMMA. As a reviewer, we usually choose to review articles/subject/fields that we are familiar, especially those article info could be found in their local languages more so then in English article. 8. A upcoming action drama title "Suleiman the Great" based on the the life of Suleiman the Magnificent, was reported will be in production in December 2021 and to be released on August 2022 in the cinemas.

Answer: WP:NFF states that "Films that have not been confirmed by reliable sources to have commenced principal photography should not have their own articles". If it is captured by reliable sources that Principal photography has begun then it is notable as demonstrated by the sources.

9. A political candidates, without any previous or current political position, who is running for November 2021 election for a Senator position in United States with multiple local newspapers coverage of his candidacy.

Answer: Not notable per WP:POLITICIAN because being an unelected candidate for political office, does not guarantee notability

10. A singer who self produced his first album in May 2020 and his songs are listed in Spotify.

Answer: This singer fails WP:SINGER because they did not meet any of the 12 criteria's listed. Producing your first album and uploading it on Spotify is just like advertising your self.

Answer: The subject passes WP:NACADEMIC as he fulfilled about 2 to 3 of the criteria listed which are NACADEMIC#1 (his research has had a significant impact in his scholarly discipline, broadly construed, as demonstrated by independent reliable sources.), NACADEMIC#8 (He is the current editor in chief of the Journal of Economic Psychology.) And NACADEMIC#6(although not too sure about this) I think being a professor is one of the highest appointed position in the university...

Answer: The subject passes MUSICBIO#1 as she has been the subject of multiple published works appearing in sources, MUSICBIO#2 as her music were on national music chart, MUSICBIO#3 #4, #5, #8, #11 and #12 she also passed WP:ENT which is also WP:NACTOR criteria #1 and #3 (as #2 has been deprecated) for films like Selena, Anaconda and others.

Answer: Notable per WP:EVENTS as it says; "An event is presumed to be notable if it has lasting major consequences or affects a major geographical scope, or receives significant non-routine coverage that persists over a period of time. Answer: No, we cannot use Wikipedia as a source in an article except the article itself is discussing Wikipedia. Wikipedia is considered user generated. :N YWe can not be the sources as the content of Wikipedia is supported by "other sources" - See WP:CIRCULAR. Wikipedia is a online knowledge sharing platform. Hi Tutor @Cassiopeia: I don't know if I'm to reply this or not, but a part of WP:CIRCULAR states “An exception is allowed when Wikipedia itself is being discussed in the article. These may cite an article, guideline, discussion, statistic, or other content from Wikipedia (or a sister project) to support a statement about Wikipedia” just as you explained above and I think I said the same thing, just that mine is not as detailed as yours, could that be why I failed it? 6.Give an example and explain why a source is reliable but not independent of a subject?

Answer: CNN(On their website) published an article on a business who is really flourishing in his business, but when checked further, the article is actually one that has been paid for. In this case we can say the source is reliable but not independent of the subject because they have been paid to write 80% of whatever is in that article.

1.USA Today source it establish SIGCOV- It is considered SIGCOC as the source addresses the topic directly and in detail it does not matter if the source covers only one aspect of the subject life. Do note to establish notability, it needs many sources and not about one source.

2. Huffpost - It is ok just cover on aspect of the subject t but HuffPost contributors/editors of the article is considered not reliable in WP:RSP but if we look closely, the piece is written by By ANNE FLAHERTY, KIMBERLY DOZIER AND ADAM GOLDMAN, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS. The Associated press is considered reliable source as they sell their news to other news agencies. However, the content is based on many individual opinions, for such I would talk it as not reliable sources.

2.PBS is reliable source but it is not independent because it is an interview piece.

1. Latin time source- article of the source is considered SIGCOV as it does not have to cover the subject entire life. "Significant coverage" addresses the topic directly and in detail, so that no original research is needed to extract the content. Significant coverage is more than a trivial mention, but it does not need to be the main topic of the source material.

2. Book source - Althought the page of the book mention the subject among other tennis player; however, the book is all about Tennis info and the subject is one of the few female champion that have many major achievements in the field and the book would sure mention the subject in the other pages.

Frank Lloyd Wright (June 8, 1867 – April 9, 1959) was an American architect, interior designer, writer, and educator. Wright believed in designing structures that were in harmony with humanity and its environment, a philosophy he called organic architecture. His creative period spanned more than 70 years. He works includes The Guggenheim, swirling, snail-shaped museum in the middle of Manhattan. Fallingwater, which has been called "the best all-time work of American architecture." This is one of Wright's most famous private residences (completed 1937), was built for Mr. and Mrs. Edgar J. Kaufmann, Sr., at Mill Run, Pennsylvania. Constructed over a 30-foot waterfall, it was designed according to Wright's desire to place the occupants close to the natural surroundings. The house was intended to be more of a family getaway, rather than a live-in home.

Answer: We can't change it. The sources says he has 3 sons and not only one source but 3 sources, we are bound to go by that 3 or maybe not even include it at all. This is common with date of birth of subjects where we have different sources conflicting each other, it's better to just leave that aspect or go by the majority.

Answer: We spot a Coi/paid editor from the way they edit pages. Editors praising subjects of articles, adding only successful things and leaving the bad things about them, writing things about biography of living persons without adding sources. If not coi, where do they get such kind of informations? Some that creates drafts will want to get the it approved at all costs.

12. What you should do when you review an NPP article and notice the creator is a COI editor?

Answer: Start a talk with them on their talk page or the article talk page, acting on good faith. If the discussion doesn't yield any results or you're not satisfied or you feel it's not something to discuss on talk page as it is very obvious and severe, you can file a report at WP:COIN

Y. In the case of an apparent COI, one should try to raise the issue at the editor's talk page and alert them to Wikipedia's policy regarding COI. If this fails, one should take the matter to the COI noticeboard and present all available evidence in the COI discussion. Answer: The first thing is to move the article to draft, if it's very obvious advertising, then it should be G11ed immediately for promotion of non notable subjects. If it's too much of that editor, I'd file a report at WP:ANI, citing instances of such behavior and letting the community decide what to make of it.

Y. COI editor needs to disclosed their COI on the article talk page and their user page. We "must" move a COI editor page from new page feed to draft space no matter how many years/edits/page created by the COI editor so the article would be first check by WP:Article for Creation (AfC) reviewer and then by New Page (NPP) reviewer/patroller. If a reviewer has both AfC and NPP reviewer right, then once the article (any article) is accepted in draft space will be automatically bypass New Page review and place in main space. Google will index the page (a few hours to a few days - Wikipedia has no control of when it will be indexed) once the article is accepted by a NPP reviewer. Report to WP:COIN if needed. Notes

G11 (promo) - What constitute a G11? At times it is hard to define. Although if a article is bluntly promote or advertise about the subject then it is a G11. Sometimes, the it is a little subtle and that would be a judgement call. As a rule of thumb, if article about an entertainers (actor/singer/DJ/artist and etc) in dept of how hard they work, how motivated they are, using all the puffery/flowery languages and especially the subject does not meet notability guidelines. For a corporation, we would see they list down all they product/services, their directors/key person in the company, they mission, their client, they are the influencer in their industrial, all the words/phrased to enhance/market the company and no substantial info that is supported by independent reliable sources.

G12 (copyvio) -

Copyright violation addresses the use of original expression without permission of the holder which is a violation of laws even the credit is given to the source. For articles, the Copyright Law gives the copyright protection to the “original works of authorship fixed in in a tangible medium of expression” in the newspaper, magazine and freelance article at the moment of their creation, for the life of the creator plus 70 years after, and 95 years for corporation publication or 120 years from date of creation, whichever is shorter.

A “fact” is not considered an original work of authorship; but how the ways facts are recorded where the style of the writing, choice and/or arrangement of words are copyrightable. An infringement of copyright is committed when a person uses the “exact words /almost exact words in a consecutive manner” of the author/holder. To note, as a guideline, a few words copies from the original works and an idea of expression such as "weather the storm", 'crossing the Rubicon" "as dead as a doornail" and etc. proper nouns, document/event/treaty/person/title/ names are generally acceptable and so is a direct quote of speech. However, any longer phrases which would be expression in a number of ways are copyright protected. To use one of two short sentences on a large article generally is ok but it will considered infringement if the edit entry is consists of big percentage of the original work and yet for some (such as newspaper/press/journalism that takes their work very seriously - anything more than 4 exact consecutively words would considered copyvio). To avoid copyright infringement, one needs uses his/her own words to convey the source’s information. Paraphrasing could minimize the the copyright violation; however, "threshold" ultimately, court judgement would determined the if copyright violation has been made.

Copyvio for texts or images shared the same notion that it is not a copyvio if the verbatim texts or images are taken from free licence and Public domain sites/specific page/image. Always check the "original source" even if in WikiCommon the editor who upload the image claim taken from a PD site, we need to check the link provided and if the site indicate the image taken from another source, then we check the source. For texts, we need to check the sites if it is a PD, sometimes the disclaimer of PD is not on the page, but on the home page or "about" page or FAQ page. Secondly, for older article (no in NPP Feed), any copyvio texts found, we will revdel it as it is almost always it is not the first versions. If a small amount of verbatim texts found in NPP Feed articles, we would revdel them; but large amount of verbatim texts we will tag G12.

Lastly, here are a few examples where the German car maker Audi was sued for copyright breach.

1. Audi infringed copyright violation over Eminem’s song “Lose Yourself” in their commercial advertising. [2]

2. Audi was fined US $ 965,000 over copyright infringement for using 10 words from Brian Andreas’s story of “Angel of Mercy” - [3]

1.Use person pronouns and possessives (I, we, my, our) 2.Multiple references to company, financial listings, staff lists, interviews, own publication, press release, blog and with clean references 3.Well written prose 'too perfect to be true' and only with single/2 edits 4.Editors have created multiple company related articles 5.Editors disclosed their COI/PAID in their userpage (not tag with COI disclose), or disclosure when they ask question in WP:Teahouse, WP:Help Desk, WP:AFCHD or receivers' talk pages.

A7/A9/A11 - Credible claim of significance - If the subject content do have such claim, then it is not a A7 even the article at the present stage of the article is not notable. Choose other method. (1) after a WP:BEFORE and found no independent reliable sources to support the notability requirements, then nominated for WP:AFD, or R2 to draft space if no sources are provided (do R2 sparingly). If it is a {[WP:BLP]] without source, then WP:BLPPROD or R2. - see Wikipedia:Credible claim of significance

Filtering - Deletion policy & other alternatives

In assignment 4, we look at articles which fits in WP:Criteria for speedy deletion (CSD) where by the the articles are deleted within a few hours to 24 hours from the time of the nomination. In Assignment 5, we discuss the what actions should be taken for those articles do not fit under the CSD criteria but do not meet relevant criteria for content of the encyclopedia.

Please read WP:PROD, WP:BLPPROD, WP:MERGE, WP:DRAFTIFY, WP:NPPDRAFT and WP:REDIR, WP:AFD and answer the following questions. (Provide links and hisdiff where they are applied.)

1. Under what circumstances do we propose deletion (PROD) a page and why do we do that?

Answer: We propose deletion for articles that do not meet any criteria for speedy deletion. It is used for uncontroversial deleting and it stays for seven days after which an admin reviews it and take a decision if it's eligible for deletion or not.

Answer: Before nomination, we must have a valid reason, we must check the page history if it has been recently vandalized, and we must confirm if it has not previously been proposed for deletion or if it has not previously been undeleted and it is neither currently being, nor has ever been, discussed at AfD.

During nomination, we add the Proposed deletion tag, provide a clear reason, providing a clear edit summary too and not marking as a minor edit, adding old prod to the talk page, leaving a message for the author and adding the page to your watch list. But with twinkle you can kill all birds with a single stone.

Y. : Before the nomination we also need to check if the article has a good reason to be deleted. Can we enhance the article if possible or move to drafts for improvement by other editors (if the article has potential), merge or redirect. Deletion is the last option. Answer: They are supposed to last for seven days, but sometimes, that may not be the case. If maybe an afd is done by mistake or when you didn't look well before nomination, and people check and see that it's not fit for add they can speedy keep it and it may not reach the seven days. Answer: If the article is about a living person and has no single source, it should be BLPPROD. If it has sources, but they did not demonstrate how the subject is notable or why they're significant, AFD is suitable. If you tag for BLPPROD and it was declined or sources were added and removed, you can use the PROD.

For G12, if the article is considered a sub class (few short/simple sentences such as XXX is the senator of New York, US. We use AfD if CSD, PROD OR BLPPROD do not apply. The deletion discussion lasts for 7 days (could be longer for relisted in the AfD discussion) and closes after reaching a community consensus. 10. When article can be moved to draft space?

Answer: We move an article to draft when the topic has some potential merit, and the article does not meet the required standard (if the topic is notable but it's not well written), and if there is no evidence of active improvement on the article.

Y Here is the R2 here for the purpose of reviewing a page and not the normal twinkle "move" function (Twickle can be done by any editor but R2 would need to be nominated and move by an admin (editors who have the move manager right can do the R2 also) - as R2 is moving the page from one name space to another. we do a R2 (move an article from new page to draft space). We need to make sure the article has a potential to meet GNG, not a single source is provided. If the article do have some info on the External link section, notes, official websites links then dont do a R2. Also, only do a R2 sparingly. Idoghor Melody There are few ways to move a page from one name space to another (draft, main/(article), category, template, File, Help and etc). We can use Twinckle and just move the page from main space to draft space; however, since this is a new page program which means when we review a new page (new article) and deem the article do have protential to be notable but lack IRS (independent, reliable sources), we could do a R2 (request from admin to move the page). Once you have don enough successful R2, you can request for Move Manger right. So use the R2 Template and request a R2 and wait for admin to move the page. v. Answer: Outing - There was one time a user copied contents of my userpage which includes my picture. I reverted their edits and gave a clear edit summary and I think I even dropped a message on his talk page if I could remember. He reverted my edits and I had to go to ANI. Well apologized and an admin deleted that revision that had my picture as I requested and some days later, he was blocked as a sock puppet.

I am not sure about this one since I dont have the info of the ANI but I will go with the admin decision because if you post anything on Wikipedia (texts, uploaded your image on Wikipedia Common which can be used in Wikipedia or to be use by anyone in the world), since every edit or image uploaded which you are the copyright holder, anyone in the world can copy the info/image since you have agreed to released the copyright on every of your edit (including your uploaded image where you are the copyright holder). (On the bottom of every edit made on the "publish changes" box prior you post your edit, you could find "By publishing changes, you agree to the Terms of Use, and you irrevocably agree to release your contribution under the CC BY-SA 3.0 License and the GFDL. You agree that a hyperlink or URL is sufficient attribution under the Creative Commons license." so if you click publish, it means you have released your copyright for everyone to use the edit/image.
