From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hello, welcome to your New Page Patrol School page! Every person I instruct will have their own page on which I will give them support and tasks for them to complete. Please make sure you have this page added to your watchlist. Your NPP School page has been specifically designed according to you and what you have requested instruction in - for that reason, please be as specific as possible when under my instruction, so that I know the best ways to help you (and do not be afraid to let me know if you think something isn't working).

Make sure you read through Wikipedia:Notability as that's the knowledge which most of the questions I ask you and tasks you do will revolve around.

How to use this page

This page will be built up over your time in the Academy, with new sections being added as you complete old ones. Each section will end with a task, written in bold type - this might just ask a question, or it might require you to go and do something. You can answer a question by typing the answer below the task; if you have to do something, you will need to provide diffs to demonstrate that you have completed the task. Some sections will have more than one task, sometimes additional tasks may be added to a section as you complete them. Please always sign your responses to tasks as you would on a talk page.

If both the instructor and student make completing the course curriculum a top priority, it will generally take around a month to go through the entirety of the curriculum. This pace is not required or necessarily expected, but rather is provided in order to give participants an idea of what to expect.

Notability[edit]

PART 1

When patrolling or reviewing an article, you may often come across articles do not meet the WP:N guidelines, but the editors make the edits in good faith. Please read WP:AGF and do not WP:BITE the new editors.

A. Notability is a test guidelines to decide whether a given topic warrants its own article in Wikipedia mainspace. Please read Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not, General Notability Guidelines, Specific Notability Guidelines, Stand-alone list before completing the following tasks.

General notability guidelines[edit]

1. In your own words, why it is important to WP:AGF and not WP:BITE new editors.

Answer: New editors may be interested in contributing to Wikipedia. By biting them or assuming bad faith, you might scare them off never to be seen again. It is also important to AGF on old editors, as honest mistakes are easy to make and most people want to contribute instead of harm.

checkY. New editors might make mistakes as they violate Wikipedia policy / guidelines due to their lack of knowledge. In all situations it's for the best to behave in a civilized manner, not give rise to or support fights unless the editors make vandalism edits then an appropriate warning message should be given. Cassiopeia talk 07:22, 21 May 2023 (UTC)

2. In your own words, how is notability defined in Wikipedia?

Answer: Generally, something is notable if it has received a lot of coverage in secondary reliable sources that aren't routine coverage.

checkY. In Wikipedia, notability means "worthy to be noted" - it is defined as a topic is "presumably" notable for stand-alone article or list if (1) it has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject whee by the sources talk "directly" about the subject in depth and in length and not only passing mentioned and (2) it is not excluded under the What WP:Wikipedia is not policy. Cassiopeia talk 07:22, 21 May 2023 (UTC)

3. Is a step-by-step instruction on how to "Change a car tire" considered a notable topic in Wikipedia?

Answer: No. Wikipedia is not a guide.

checkY. Right as Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a how to manual site. Cassiopeia talk 07:22, 21 May 2023 (UTC)

4. What are the differences between A WP:GNG and a specific notability guidelines? how do we determine which one to use when patrolling an article?

Answer: Specific policies can help determine whether or not a subject has extensive coverage and/or what sources should be used.

☒N. Pls answer again. Cassiopeia talk 07:22, 21 May 2023 (UTC)
Answer again: GNG is general and applies to everything. SNGs are created to help gauge whether something passes GNG, specifically, the community believes that the subject passes GNG if it meets SNG. Different SNGs exist for each subject, while GNG applies to everything. SNGs and GNG are the same in essence, so one could use either one, but usually looking at SNGs first is easier as these are more specific. Aaron Liu (talk) 19:42, 21 May 2023 (UTC)
checkY - Both can be used when patrolling but those subject falls under SNG/SSG but fails to meet the WP:GNG guidelines would sometimes nominated for deletion WP:AfD for discussion to determine the status of the article. (We will cover AfD in later assignment). However, (important) SNG and SSG do NOT supersite GNG, if a SNG or SSG change, all articles which previously passed SNG or SSG that the current changed SSG or SNG do not apply would subject to be deleted under AfD. And if articles pass SNG or SSG and do not pass GNG would also subject to AfD (to say that if an article pass SSG or SNG it usually would pass GNG criteria). In another words, for an article to be truly stay in main space in Wikipedia, the article needs to be truly pass GNG. Cassiopeia talk 01:58, 27 May 2023 (UTC)

Specific notability guidelines[edit]

5. If an editor creates an article about "2024 Summer Olympics" in 2019 without providing any sources, is the subject considered not notable and why?

Answer: Yes, the subject is considered notable, as the 2024 Olympics are already scheduled and the details for the bid have been cemented.

checkYThe subject is considered notable as 1. it had widespread effect as an international event, 2. it has already been written about in independent sources. 3. it's in relatively near future with set place and dates (Summer Olympics 2050 would not pass for instance). Cassiopeia talk 07:22, 21 May 2023 (UTC)
B. Without considered of sources/content policies and review just based on "subject specific notability" (SSN) "alone" for sake of the exercises below, please answer if the subject meets the SSN guidelines, based on the given content below, and specify under (1) which notability criteria they meet or fail (example - MUSICBI#1 if certain sub set of criteria is applicable) and (2) reasons/explanations.

6. A New York city based 2021 start up software company , specializing in data mining, has just received a USD 200K investor fund.

Answer: It's hard to say ignoring sources, but just the information given alone does not pass WP:NCORP. The investor fund doesn't matter, and I'm pretty sure that's kinda normal for startups.

checkY. Cassiopeia talk 07:22, 21 May 2023 (UTC)

7. Guram Kutateladze who is a Ultimate Fighting Championships fighters with the undefeated mixed martial arts record of 12-2.

Answer: Probably not. The only SSN for this (WP:NMMA) is being in the world top 10 for his division. He isn't on the Sherdog ranking or the Fight Matrix ranking. Also, based on these rankings I heavily doubt that his record is undefeated.

checkY. Cassiopeia talk 07:22, 21 May 2023 (UTC)

8. A upcoming action drama title "Suleiman the Great" based on the the life of Suleiman the Magnificent, was reported will be in production in December 2022 and to be released on August 2023 in the cinemas.

Answer: I'm not sure if you intended for the "in production" date to be in the future, as it's past December 2022. WP:NFF states that an article should not exist if principle photography, which is the first phase of production, has not begun. So, yes, the film should qualify as notable.

checkY. Cassiopeia talk 07:22, 21 May 2023 (UTC)

9. A political candidates, without any previous or current political position, who is running for November 2021 election for a Senator position in United States with multiple local newspapers coverage of his candidacy.

Answer: No. WP:NPOL says that candidates need to have a background or have press coverage way more than just local news to warrant notability. Additionally, coverage of new local candidates is WP:ROUTINE. Also, a bit down from ROUTINE is WP:BLP1E, which says that subjects primarily notable for a single event are not notable enough to warrant their own article, and if the event is notable enough should be covered in that event's article instead.

checkY. To pass WP:NPOL, once needs to be officially elected to state/national position. Cassiopeia talk 07:22, 21 May 2023 (UTC)

10. A singer who self produced his first album in May 2020 and his songs are listed in Spotify.

Answer: No. Doesn't meet anything in WP:NSINGER.

checkY. Cassiopeia talk 07:22, 21 May 2023 (UTC)
C. Based on which SSN guidelines the below subjects are notable under (1) which notability criteriaMUSICBI#1 (if certain sub set of criteria is applicable) and (2) reasons/explanations

He is a former Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion, Dream Heavyweight Champion, K-1 World Grand Prix Champion, and was the first fighter to hold world titles in MMA and K-1 kickboxing at the same time."
Answer again: @Cassiopeia: After an hour of searching I've finally found this. He's listed as #8 quite a couple times and passes NMMA. Aaron Liu (talk) 18:37, 28 May 2023 (UTC)

@Cassiopeia: As requested. I’ve finished the first assignment. Also, I’m pretty sure MOS prohibits using semicolon list items for headers. Aaron Liu (talk) 02:03, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
Also, could we move this to the talk page so I can use discussion tools? Aaron Liu (talk) 21:16, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
Aaron LiuNo. Each assignment has a "communication section" (at the bottom of the assignment). All communication of the assignments would be discussed/exchanged at the "communication section " of the particular assignment respectively. Cassiopeia talk 06:15, 12 May 2023 (UTC)
Why must it be at the bottom? Can’t it at least be a separate section? Aaron Liu (talk) 11:27, 12 May 2023 (UTC)
Aaron Liu All questions and info in one space. If you find it so difficult to place the discussion to be at the bottom of the assignment, then you can opt out of the program. Cassiopeia talk 06:49, 13 May 2023 (UTC)
@Cassiopeia: Is there a time you could finish reviewing my first assignment? Aaron Liu (talk) 11:41, 15 May 2023 (UTC)

Example 2 - house the edit with square brackets

Example 3 - brief info of the link (add square bracket and state brief info - note a space is needed after the last aphbehet of the URL before the brief info text)
this edit
Cassiopeia talk 01:58, 27 May 2023 (UTC)
@Cassiopeia I know what square brackets do. However writing out the URL when it's the majority of an answer is much better aesthetically.
I do not get your hint. If you're talking about NMMA, I cannot find any world heavyweight ranking in which Overeem is in the top 10. Aaron Liu (talk) 02:01, 27 May 2023 (UTC)
Aaron Liu Well, since you know about square brackets for housing the URL, then use it in the future as it would provide a link info or # so it could be set as a reference. As for question Part C Q12, go and find the criteria of NMMA and from the info go and search the info on the search engine and you will find the info easily and do provide necessary link of your finding for your answer. When it is done, ping me. Be safe and best. Cassiopeia talk 03:22, 28 May 2023 (UTC)
Aaron Liu, Remember to ping each time when you have finished the assignment. Reviewed Part C Q12. If you have any questions, pls let me know or you are ready to move on to the next assignment. Pls let me know. Be safe and best. Cassiopeia talk 22:37, 28 May 2023 (UTC)
@Cassiopeia Sure let's move on. I did ping though, in the question itself. Aaron Liu (talk) 00:25, 29 May 2023 (UTC)
Aaron Liu, OK and pls ping me on the communication section in the future. Cassiopeia talk 02:02, 29 May 2023 (UTC)

Sources[edit]

Background for trainees[edit]

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia for such content claimed should be supported by independent (secondary), reliable sources for verification. Please read WP:RS, WP:IS, WP:RSP, WP:V, WP:PROVEIT, WP:Primary, WP:Secondary, and WP:Tertiary and answered the the below questions in your own words.
You could contact WP:RX if you could not find the sources yourself either on web due to Paywall content or printed books.

Exercises[edit]

1.
Topic Explanation 5 Examples Comment by Cass
Reliable source

A preferably secondary and independent published source with a reputation for accuracy. Secondary means that the source is a secondary account of a witness's (or the equivalent to a witness's) account. When such sources aren't available and the claim isn't significant, primary sources may be used to source that claim.

  1. (example)The Guardian newspaper
  2. ABC News
  3. The Age
  4. Agence France-Presse
  5. Al Jazeera
  6. Amnesty International
User generated sources

A source that primarily employs content created by users, i.e. where content can come from any account and registration requires trivial effort in terms of accuracy. Such sources are unacceptable unless the account in question is a known expert in the relevant field.

  1. Answers.com
  2. Daily Kos
  3. Discogs
  4. Encyclopaedia Metallum
  5. ResearchGate
Non Independent source

Independent sources have editorial independence (advertisers do not dictate content) and no conflicts of interest (there is no potential for personal, financial, or political gain to be made from the existence of the publication).

  1. The Epoch Times
  2. Hope not Hate
  3. Media Matters for America
  4. Mondoweiss
  5. Southern Poverty Law Center

2.
Type Explanation Sources (15 Primary ; 5 Secondary ; 5 Tertiary) Comment by Cass
Primary

Account written by a person who is directly involved or a direct record of the event.

  1. (example) scientific journal articles reporting experimental research results
  2. Press releases
  3. Interview transcripts
  4. Footage of event
  5. Audio recording of event
  6. Autobiographies
  7. Legal documents
  8. The work the article is on
  9. Archaeological artifacts
  10. Correspondence
  11. Raw data of studies
  12. Diaries
  13. Text of law
  14. Business records
  15. Witness accounts
  16. Advertisement
Secondary

Another group's original coverage of primary sources.

  1. (example) newspaper
  2. Documentary
  3. Systematic reviews
  4. Literary critiques
  5. News sites
  6. Books by specialists who didn't witness the event/invent the technology themselves
Tertiary

Something that broadly covers fields by consolidating secondary sources.

  1. (example) encyclopedias
  2. Textbooks
  3. Dictionaries
  4. Compendia
  5. Almanacs
  6. Guidebooks

3.
Subject Primary Secondary Tertiary Comment by Cass
Example: Art Example:Sculpture Example:Article critiquing the sculpture Example:Encyclopedic article on the sculptor
History Footage of the incident Book by uninvolved historian Encyclopedic article on the incident
Science Original research paper Systematic review involving topic Encyclopedic article on the study
Athletes Autobiography Uninvolved documentary Encyclopedic article

4. Please explain in your own words why the content claimed needs to be verified?

Answer: To substantially increase the possibility of the claim being true. As an encyclopedia, we shouldn't publish statements of dubious truth.

5.Could we used Wikipedia as the source? and why?

Answer: No. 1. Citing an uncited claim still doesn't have an actual source 2. When they are cited, we should use the actual source as anyone can edit and the material might be moved.

6.Give an example and explain why a source is reliable but not independent of a subject?

Answer: A court filing is usually truthful (legal oath) but written by the company about itself, so it is not independent.

7.Give an example and explain why a source is independent source but not reliable?

Answer: Wikipedia is independent, and as discussed in 5 Wikipedia shouldn't be cited.

Pls indicate "y" for yes or "n" for no or "?" after "ind", "rel" and "sig" (see first example) and give a brief explanation of why you place "y" or "n".

Fallingwater, Mill Run, Pennsylvania (1937)

Frank Lloyd Wright (June 8, 1867 – April 9, 1959) was an American architect, interior designer, writer, and educator. Wright believed in designing structures that were in harmony with humanity and its environment, a philosophy he called organic architecture. His creative period spanned more than 70 years. He works includes The Guggenheim, swirling, snail-shaped museum in the middle of Manhattan.[1][2] Fallingwater, which has been called "the best all-time work of American architecture."[3] This is one of Wright's most famous private residences (completed 1937), was built for Mr. and Mrs. Edgar J. Kaufmann, Sr., at Mill Run, Pennsylvania. Constructed over a 30-foot waterfall, it was designed according to Wright's desire to place the occupants close to the natural surroundings. The house was intended to be more of a family getaway, rather than a live-in home.[4]

Aaron Liu, See assignment 2 above. Ping me here (the communication section) when you have done the assignment. Be safe and best. Cassiopeia talk 02:04, 29 May 2023 (UTC)

@Cassiopeia: Done. I still don't really get the MOS-violating formatting. Aaron Liu (talk) 19:49, 30 December 2023 (UTC)

Aaron Liu, Sorry for the late reply as I just came back from 6 week vacation not long. Not sure what you mean (which Question or section) about the MOS violation - pls specify which Question/comment/link) and if you have finished the assignment and want me to review, then pls let me know. Thank you and best. Cassiopeia talk 23:51, 8 February 2024 (UTC)
MOS:PSEUDOHEADINGS: Do not make pseudo-headings by abusing semicolon markup (reserved for description lists) and try to avoid using bold markup. Along with accessibility reasons, these also prevent the "edit" button for that specific subsection from showing up. The numbered subsections for exercises violates this, and I had to manually convert them for the convenience of editing subsections. Also, I do not see any reason for making communication at the bottom of this page instead of on the talk page.
@Cassiopeia And yes, I have finished the assignment. That's what I meant to mean by "Done", sorry for the confusion. Aaron Liu (talk) 00:28, 9 February 2024 (UTC)
