Bio[edit]

I am a 20 year old student in my first year of college. My plan is to finish my two years of prerequisites here at OC, keep my grades up, and hopefully get into nursing school as quickly as I can. The biggest interest of mine is soccer. I played just about my whole life up until I finished high school. One thing I do wish is that I wish I would've pursued soccer in college. Although I don't play anymore, it is still something I'm passionate about and I still enjoy watching the game. I've always been interested in singing, but it's always been something I've done on my own time. I love where I live, in the state of Washington, and I am a huge homebody.

Iv'e never really used Wikipedia before this class, and I never really knew how to use it either. One thing that interests me is that there are so many different languages on Wikipedia and how big the encyclopedia actually is. I will use Wikipedia mostly for projects in this class, but I could also see myself using it to collect information for other interests of mine. I have a huge interest in the Women's National Soccer team, and especially some of the players specifically. I could see myself using Wikipedia to collect information on some of those people or even make some of my own edits on their Wikipedia pages.

Article Review[edit]

I've always been interested in music and exploring new genres of music. Although I've never listened to power pop all that much, it interested me and I wanted to gain some knowledge about the 1960s modest genre of music. Its origins began in the 1960s and although that is way before my time, I wish it still would've been around for me to listen to. I visited the power pop page on Wikipedia, and found three aspects of it worth commenting on: its lack of citations, its overall voice of the article, and the completeness of the article.

Citations[edit]

There are some citations in this article, but some more could be added within the article itself. Each sentence is required to have a citation at the end of it, and I'm not seeing that in this article. There is a section that does not cite any sources at all, so it makes me wonder where the information is even coming from or if it is reliable. There are references listed at the bottom, but not all of them are in the actual article, so it's hard to determine which reference supports which fact.

Voice[edit]

In some sections of the article it looks like there is information that is original research. It looks like the information provided is from personal experiences, and Wikipedia is supposed to be a completely neutral point of view, eliminating any first-person responses. It also sounds a little biased in some parts. One example of the writer's bias is about the old band named Blondie: "The band's songs "One Way or Another" and "11:59" from Parallel Lines clearly demonstrated Blondie's power pop side" (United Kingdom, par. 2). This shows the writer's opinion on the two songs and relation to power pop.

Completeness[edit]

In the section talking about the 1980s to the present time, it fails to mention anything about the genre that is in the present, today. The latest time period they gave was the 2000s, and even then, all they said was that it flourished in the underground. 17 years later, it has me questioning whether the genre is still relevant today or not.

Summary[edit]

Overall I think that this is a decent Wikipedia page. The information that was provided gave me a good understanding of the genre that I knew very little about before coming across the page. It does lack citations in some areas, so it was hard for me to detect which facts were reliable, and had me questioning some statements due to the lack of citations. I also got a sense of bias in some parts of the article. Also, I think adding how the genre is prospering (or diminishing) today would give a sense of completeness to the article.
