Ben Bowen is an aspiring ethnomusicologist, popular music theorist, children's music educator, and trumpet player currently living in Hamilton, ON. He studied jazz trumpet at Humber College and York University from 1997 - 2001 and holds an Hons BFA in Music from York University (2009). He is currently in the second year of his MA in Musicology at York University, where he has begun work on his thesis: the intersection of children's music and traditional American folk song, the socio-cultural reasons for their divergence, and their subsequent re-association in the folk revival of the 1980s in Canada. He has been studying intensively with Rob Bowman, including graduate courses in Popular Music and Cultural Studies, and he is currently working with Bowman's first-year rock & pop course as a TA; Bowman is also his thesis advisor, along with Bob Witmer. Ben is actively involved in the Toronto pop music scene, playing regularly with Great Aunt Ida, Ronley Teper, and The Book of Gnomes, and also works as a session musician, having arranged and recorded horns for A Northern Chorus, Lily Frost, Bellewoods, Valery Gore, Nick Zubeck, Brian MacMillan, and Western Terrestrial, among others.
