Utilizing ZFN for target disruption of HIV co-receptor CCR5

HIV requires CD4 and a co-receptor CCR5 to cellular entry and infection.[5] Thus isolating and targeting disruption of the CCR5 coded gene would be an effective way to prevent HIV entry to CD4 T-cells. [5] Treatment of CD4 cells with zinc-finger nucleases allows the coded gene to be altered, silencing the expression of CCR5 chemokine receptors, as a result, preventing HIV from utilizing and chemokine receptors to enter the cell. HIV/HCV co-infection may lead to cognitive impairment

Co-infection of both HIV and HCV leads to diminished cognition and reduced neuropsychological performance.[6] Utilizing antiretroviral therapy effectively improves human immune system in addition to prolonging survival of HIV patients, however individuals who are co-infected with both HIV and HCV still exhibit cognitive impairment.[6] Thus co-infected individuals with controlled HIV viral load are could benefit from anti-HCV therapy, as it would reduce cognition impairment.
